About this ebook

It has been 12 months since Beary has arrived at the Academy from his tour aboard the Saber Claw. He enjoyed teaching the classes he had been assigned. At first, some of the older cadets resented the fact that their instructor was younger than they were. Then they would see the ribbons on his uniform and hear the rumors. Ben, of course, helped spread them. Flight training was going well. His many hours in jump ships were proving to be a blessing instead of a curse. He expected to graduate early from flight training.
Caesar had spent six months at the academy then shipped off to aid a hospital ship that had lost one of its surgeons to an accident. The Hospital ship was trying to combat a new disease that had cropped up on an agricultural colony in the Darius system. Once again, his work under Dr Maxumus was proving invaluable.
Ben, along with taking accelerated classes, was teaching a class in survival and weapons. Ben had taken to this task with enthusiasm. With the help of two of the Marine Professors, he wrote the training manual for the course, which they used as a major project in two of his classes. The class he taught was so popular there was a waiting list.
Pompey kept busy trying to prepare for the cub, which was due in three months, running two homes, plus working for her new father- in- law on special issues.
Senator Maxumus was busy trying to get the Senate to strengthen its rules. He did not want to see new conspiracies flair up. The idea that eight senators some in critical positions could become traitors had shaken the Senate. The Bearilian house of Representatives was demanding a full and open investigation as it scrutinized its own members.
The Arcrilians had suffered such a devastating defeat that they were asking for terms for a treaty and for aid. The Bearilian President immediately started negotiations along with the Antillean Supreme Council. The result was the removal of all Arcrilian ships from Bearilian and Antillean territory, in exchange for food and raw materials purchased at a reasonable price. For the Antilleans this was a big win.
For Angelina Maxumus the last 12 months had been hectic as she tried to balance her time between Bearilia Prime and Andreas Prime. She enjoyed being a Neuro-surgeon a lot more than being an Empress. She even found that she had to show up at State functions not as a wife of a prominent Senator, but as a Head of State. There had also been a need to appoint representatives to the two Bearilian Houses.
One of her second Brother's sons, Iacomus Augustus, had joined his cousins on Andreas Prime. He found some unclaimed land near the western ocean connected to the Augustan land. A young Dragon, Silver Tail agreed to be his Family Dragon. The Dragon Counsel suggested that he be appointed as the Planet's Senator.
A young nomad also moved to Andreas Prime. He had no family or land. A young Dogon, Saraina, approached the Dogon Counsel and asked that this young Nomad be given its sheep and become its family. His name was Khristophoros. The Dogon Counsel gave him the last name Theodoros.
Khristophoros Theodoros was called before Angelina. She questioned him for several cycles. She found out that he had been part of a servant family to the Pompaius family. She found goodness and strength in this young Bear. After talking with both counsels, she appointed him to the House of Representatives. He would prove to be a loyal and excellent choice.
Savato Artemus was not happy. He loved the Crimson Blade but he could not find a gunner that met his standards. He also missed his friends.
Captain Centaurus found he hated the paper work of a ships captain as much as Atilus had. Yet he loved the Saber Claw, especially with the new upgrades.
Commodore Atilus was a taskmaster with his Destroyer Squadron. Only Centaurus had no complaints. Yet Destroyer Squadron 9 was shapin

Pompey kept busy trying to prepare for the cub, which was due in three months, running two homes, plus working for her new father-in-law on special issues.

Senator Maxumus was busy trying to get the Senate to strengthen its rules. He did not want to see new conspiracies flair up. Commodore Atilus was a taskmaster with his Destroyer Squadron. Only Centaurus had no complaints. Yet Destroyer Squadron 9 was shaping up. Atilus did transfer two captains out because they were not aggressive enough to suit his style.

The list of abandoned systems within Bearilian space was being studied. The bears from the Pratis System were asking about going home, as were others. The Bearilian President approached the Senate with a request for the military to design and build a new scientific survey and research vessel. It had to be able to defend itself in deep space against the usual threats, yet not be a warship per say.

This is where our story begins.

    CHAPTER 1

    New Beginnings

B EARY WAS IN his flight suit and was walking into the briefing room. His four instructor pilots were waiting.

Flight Instructor Lieutenant Bruno walked up to him. Ensign Maxumus this will be your graduation exercise. You need to fly an attack mission on these targets, destroy any aggressors you face and survive. If you do, you graduate. If not, you don’t.

Beary smirked. Yes sir. May I formulate my attack or must I follow a specific attack plan.

Bruno sneered, No just try and get it done. You will fail Ensign I promise.

Sir my only requirement is to destroy the enemy and survive the conflict. Is that correct? Beary asked.

That’s right. You must survive. Bruno confirmed.

The four flight instructors took off for the training area. Beary had one cycle to decide on his attack plan. He approached his crew chief. Sgt White-eyes, can I specify the weapons load I want for this exercise?

Sgt White-eyes looked up. Sir you have that liberty. What do you want me to put in the computer as your load? Remember it can’t be over the load capability of the fighter.

Beary smiled, I am within 2 grains of the max, but I am under the limit.

Sgt. White-eyes loaded the necessary simulations. Sir, since you are simulating a heavy load she will be stick heavy at takeoff and will adjust as you unload ordinance. Sir, are you sure you can do the takeoff?

Beary grinned, Chief I have 12000 Cycles in the old M Class Jump ships not to mention the new Daggers. I’ll get her off the ground.

Sgt. White-eyes just looked at him. Yes Sir.

Beary climbed in and the flight crew strapped him in and lowered the canopy. He gave the thumbs up to the crew chief as he taxied.

A voice came over the radio. Spirit 6, combat hot launch. Good hunting.

Beary looked at the radio, Control, combat hot launch, aye. Beary hit the thrusters and shot down the runway. About half way down he shot vertical and barreled rolled and headed for the target.

Sgt White-eyes looked up to see an Admiral standing on the walkway of the tower. He turned to one of his team What is going on? Did you see that take off?

The Marine Corporal smirked, I’ll bet you 50 credits he completes the exercise.

Sgt White-eyes started to pull out his wallet then stopped. What do you know that I don’t?

The Corporal smiled, I heard his call sign. He is Spirit 6

Sgt White-eyes put his wallet away. No bet.

Lieutenant Hazard set himself up to protect the last target in the line. It was a harden bunker with a self-defense array. No student pilot ever got this far and this Ensign Maxumus was not going to. Hazard checked his scanners. He picked up a brief signal but it disappeared. It was against the rules for student pilots to use cloaking devices, so he did not pay attention to the asteroids behind him.

Beary simulated the launch of two Mark 4 missiles on the harden bunker and its defenses. He then came up under Lieutenant Hazard from the surface of the asteroid, with simulated rail guns and phasers.

Lieutenant Hazard knew he was in trouble when the smoke canisters on the asteroid and his power failed instantaneously. He was dead. There wasn’t anything he could do. Beary flashed by and saluted as he dove under another asteroid.

The next two targets were close together. He decided to take out the fighters first, and then bomb the two targets. The two fighters were flying by the asteroid he was hiding behind. He flew between them again, using rail guns and phasers. The two instructors tried to react but, they too, were out of the contest. Beary then flew in low and bombed both targets. Again, smoke poured from the targets.

Flight Instructor Lieutenant Bruno saw the smoke as he flew a figure eight around the target he was defending. All of a sudden he saw Beary’s fighter skim the surface of the asteroid. Soon the smoke canisters went off. Moreover, his fighter was lost in the smoke and clutter of the asteroid.

Beary appeared out of nowhere but Bruno was fast enough to escape the attack. It wasn’t long before he managed to get in attack position. He maneuvered in and fired. All of a sudden, he lost power and Beary’s Fighter flew an indicator that it had been destroyed but that the pilot had ejected. The proctor ship pulled in, reset the computers, and had everyone follow him in.

Lieutenant Bruno was furious. He walked up to the proctor. Ensign Maxumus failed. I destroyed his ship and he cheated.

Captain Saw-paw looked at the lieutenant. We have looked over the simulation, Lieutenant. He ejected prior to the destruction of his ship, therefore surviving the attack. He destroyed all targets and shot down your flight. By your own rules, he won.

Bruno was madder still. He didn’t attack the way he was supposed to and he flew below minimum safety ranges.

Admiral Starpaw stepped out. Lieutenant what bothers you is you had your tail handed to you by a 19 year old Ensign.

    Bruno came to attention. Sir…

At ease, Lieutenant, but let me explain why we aren’t worried about range safety with this pilot. He has thousands of hours of combat experience in jump ships. He has done this for real. He even survived and returned his Dagger after it took a direct hit from an Arcrilian main gun. So despite your personal animosity how did he do? the Admiral asked.

Lieutenant Hazard spoke, Admiral he caught me looking the wrong way. I didn’t even know what happened till I was done. The other two agreed.

Bruno dropped his head. Sir, he out thought us and beat us at our own game. I do not like it but he is a hard flying pilot. I have to pass him though I don’t want to.

The Admiral grinned, Ok I’ll have Ensign Maxumus put on his Class A’s, and we will have a pinning on Ceremony right now.

Beary had changed out of his flight gear as ordered. No one on the flight line or the flight school had seen him in this uniform. Beary was uncomfortable.

The crew chief was the first to see him and came to attention wide eyed and saluted, as did the rest of the crew. Soon it was like a wave.

Lieutenant Bruno could not figure out what was going on. The Admiral was between him and Beary.

Admiral Starpaw came to attention and saluted the Ensign who saluted back.

Ensign Maxumus reporting as requested Admiral. Beary said

Ensign Maxumus you have officially completed flight training. I wanted to be here when you got your wings. Lieutenant Bruno will present them, the Admiral said.

Bruno’s head was still reeling. Had the Admiral actually saluted first?

When Beary stepped up he saw the Jump ship wings, the jump wings, and then he saw the two top ribbons the Bearilian star and the honey colored Red Rose Award. He came to attention and saluted.

Beary saluted back as Bruno pined the Fighter Pilot wings onto

    Beary’s uniform.

The other three lieutenants also saw the ribbons and came to attention.

Bruno spoke first. Ensign Maxumus, it is tradition that you buy your instructors dinner after you earn your wings.

Beary smiled, It would be my honor. Admiral, would you like to join us.

No thank you Ensign I have to take care of some business. Admiral Starpaw said.

At the officers club Beary was ordering dinner. He had called Pompey and asked her to join the celebration. She was dressed elegantly and showing that she was pregnant. The four officers stood up as she approached.

Pompey smiled a smile Beary swore she had learned from his mother.

Gentlebears, please be seated, she said as she kissed her husband.

Beary beamed, Sirs, this is my wife, Pompey Maxumus. There were greetings all around. Pompey, I ordered you a steak and cold water fish plate with greens and an apple tart.

Pompey grinned, Thank you. Sirs, I see my Boar won his fighter wings.

Bruno smiled, Yes, Lady Maxumus. He whipped us good.

Pompey put on that smile again and said, Please, call me Pompey.

Bruno saw the bill especially after another bottle of nectar was brought to the table. Ensign, we didn’t realize you had a wife. Please, let us pay part of this bill.

Beary laughed, Sir, it is tradition that I buy this meal and as long as the fleet is rebuilding, I think I can afford it. I designed the warp engines they are using and several sub systems when I was at the Vallen Institution.

Hazard shook his head. You’re Doctor Beary Maxumus, son of Senator Octavious Maxumus. You do play your cards close to your vest. His father was Golden Dragon 1.

Bruno closed his eyes. Not once had he used any influence. He was just that good. Maybe it was in the genes. His father was supposed to be the best. Had you meet Admiral Starpaw before, Ensign?

No, Sir. I don’t know why the Chief of Fleet Operations was here to see me graduate flight school. Beary said.

There were more questions as the night progressed. Soon Pompey stood up. Gentlebears, if you will forgive me, I need to call it a night. With your permission, I will ask my husband to escort me home. Thank you for a wonderful night. Pompey said with that smile.

Beary walked over, paid the bill, and returned as each officer felt of her cub kicking.

Hazard chuckled, He or she is strong.

    Beary beamed, Thank you.

As they walked to the transport, Pompey kissed him, Do you have any duty tomorrow?

Beary smiled, No I have two days off.

Good, you will need your rest. She said with an impish smile.

The next morning, Beary got up at 0530Cycles and went for a three KSMU run and then he did a 30 STU work out in his basement. At 0700, he showered and got dressed. He started breakfast when Pompey came down in her robe. Are you alright, Priscilla? Beary asked.

Pompey sighed, Did I thank you for not using my secret name last night. as she kissed him.

Beary grinned, How is the Star of Vandar this morning? Beary teased.

Pompey smiled, Ready to pull planets into my orbit. I hope you love me this big.

Beary kissed her tummy and received a kicked in the nose, Bambine is up. Does he /she always kick that hard?

Pompey giggled, Yeah, sometimes harder. Alexa will be here today to give me the once over.

Beary shook his head, I appreciate her, doing it but we have good doctors here.

Pompey dropped her head. What the Empress commands we do, my husband.

Beary just smirked and served breakfast.

Just as they finished breakfast, there was a knock at the front door. Pompey ran into the bedroom to change. She grabbed a nice housedress and slipped it on.

Beary grinned when he saw a small Maxmimus with strange hair tufts on his head, a rumpled suite, and a hat in his Paws. Dr. Vallen, what a wonderful surprise!

Dr. Vallen looked at Beary, Did you not receive my message that I was coming?

Pompey walked in and Dr. Vallen bowed. My dear you are as radiant as the star you represent. Pardon an old Bear. I was sure I sent you that message. He checked his communication device and found he had failed to confirm the send command. I hate this new technology. It gets in the way of communication.

Pompey walked over to her husband. Dear, will you introduce me to this gentlebear?

Beary nodded. Pompey, this is Dr. Vallen. Dr. Vallen this is the Lady Pompey Maxumus.

Pompey beamed. Dr. Vallen in private you may call me Priscilla. It is my secret name. Also, please have your driver bring in your bags. On Andreas Prime I could give you better quarters, but please except our hospitality.

Dr. Vallen looked at her, My Dear Lady, I cannot impose, especially in your current condition.

Pompey smiled that smile, Dr. Vallen surly you would not dishonor me in front of my neighbors. Our house on this base is small but adequate. I have room for you and your assistant or driver.

Dr. Vallen bowed, The driver is from the base. I will gladly, and humbly, except your offer, my Lady.

Pompey beamed. I will show you to your room so you may freshen up. Have you eaten, Dr. Vallen? I can fix you breakfast.

Dr. Vallen looked at the simple but elegant guest room. This will be very nice, my dear. Yes, I have eaten but perhaps some tea?

Pompey smiled, I’ll have it ready, my dear Doctor.

Beary looked at her, Are you alright Priscilla?

Pompey sighed and came over and held him, I have a feeling our lives are going to be up ended again. Oh look at the time! Will you get him some tea? Your sister will be here soon.

Beary poured the tea, set it on the table, and got himself some. He wondered how many times he and Dr. Vallen had sat and had tea.

Dr. Vallen walked in looking a little less rumpled. I saw you received my wedding present. I am sorry I could not get away to attend the wedding,

Beary smiled, We missed you, but we understood. It is good to see you. Pompey does not believe this is a social visit. Is she right?

Dr. Vallen dropped his head. She is of the nomadic tribes of the Southern Continent. She may have the gift of second sight. She is right, my dear cub. I guess it is wrong to call you that now.

Beary shook his head, No, Dr. Vallen. It is my honor to have you call me that. What does my mentor require from me?

Dr. Vallen looked at him. "You are to receive new orders taking you away from the Academy to help me design a new scientific research starship. It will delay your second deployment. You are to be promoted to Lieutenant Jg. and you will be able to hand pick some bears to help us. We need security bears and someone to help design a new dagger that meets the needs of the scientists yet can help protect the ship and land scientists on planets.

Our one problem is finding a place to build the ship. All the ship yards are busy."

Beary was thinking when the doorbell rang. Excuse me Dr. Vallen I’ll be back in a moment. Beary walked over and opened the door.

Alexa smiled, and said. I charge double for house calls. She kissed her little brother. But I know you can afford it. Moreover, yes I will put it on your bill. Where is my patient?

Beary pointed toward the bedroom upstairs, and started to close the door when he heard a voice.

Son, are you trying to tell me something? Angelina said as she opened the half-closed door.

Mom, Beary said giving her a kiss. I didn’t know you were coming!

Angelina saw Dr. Vallen and walked into the kitchen.

Dr. Vallen stood up and bowed, Empress Angelina I… .

Angelina smiled. Dr. Vallen, please, you are a friend. You know it is just Angelina.

Beary thought. Mom is the old Andreas Shipyard still usable?

Angelina considered the question. If not, I am sure it can be put in order and while our number of Maxmimus that have returned home hasn’t reached a point where such jobs are necessary it would help our dragon population and maybe even a few Dogons. Why?

Dr. Vallen smirked. He knew Beary was still his best student. Your, Ladyship, we have a need to design and build a new class of research starship. Would you consider allowing it to be built on Andreas Prime?

Angelina smiled. I will have to talk to the Councils. Can you give me a few moments? She stepped out of the room and opened a small case. Gray Talon’s face appeared. Gray Talon, greetings. I have a request for the Council.

Gray Talon bowed as he looked into the communication device, How may we serve our Empress?

Angelina explained the situation and her idea. How long before you can give me answer, Sire?

Grey Talon bowed his head and beamed. If your Highness will give us one Cycle we will have an answer for you.

Thank you and the Council for all your hard work. I will wait to hear from you, Sir Gray Talon. Angelina said and ended the transmission.

Grey Talon smiled, beautiful and smart, his empress was a wonder. He turned to a young dragon. Call the Council. I want everyone here in 30STU including the Dogon representative.

Within 15 STU, all representatives were in their place. Grey Talon grinned. The Empress has asked if we can reopen the old ship yard to aid in the building of a new Research Starship. The young Prince will be helping design it. Will you support this request?

A huge roar expanded from the council as a unanimous yes vote was given. Even the Dogon representative was howling in joy. Gray Talon held up his claw. I will inform the Empress. Please find and assign workers also put out the word to the families that we are looking for workers. With that, the Dragons and Dogon left to carry out their tasks.

Gray Talon walked back into his office, Give me the Empress!

Angelina answered her communication device. It had only been 45STU. Yes. Sir Gray Talon?

Your Majesty, the vote was a unanimous yes. We have already started the process of reopening the ship yard. Gray Talon reported.

Thank you, Sire, and the Council. I shall see you soon. Angelina said.

It is our pleasure to serve our Empress, even on to death. Gray Talon responded. This was the highest form of respect for a dragon to give such a pledge.

I hope I am worthy, my dear Gray Talon. She said with a tear in her eye.

My dear Empress, you have already proven it. With your permission my Empress, Gray Talon, is signing out. The old dragon turned away as he smiled and allowed a single tear to drop.

Angelina straightened and walked into the kitchen, Dr. Vallen you have your shipyard and the finest welders in the universe to help you build your ship. Beary I need to go to Andreas Prime for business. Alexa is also going. Pompey’s father was wondering if she could go also. She gave him that smile.

Mom, she is in her last trimester… . Beary tried to say when she interrupted him.

She will have Alexa and I with her and you will be there in a month’s time after you and Dr. Vallen pick your staffs. Is that not correct? Angelina offered.

Beary shook his head, Mom how much do you know?

Angelina smiled, I made some calls. As a head of state you would be surprised at what I can find out or make happen if need be. So how can I help?

Dr. Vallen looked at her. You have cleared the main obstacle but now we need a place to design the ship and its systems.

Angelina smiled. The City of Alpine is being rebuilt. It is 3 KSMU from the Shipyard. It will supply housing for non Maxmimus personnel or those that have not been able to claim ancestral land. Anything you need the council will provide. I am concerned that there will be questions of a conflict of interests, especially for my Son, so this should all be cleared through the JAG and the Senate.

Dr. Vallen pulled a letter from his pocket. It was a direct order from the high Command that Lieutenant JG Maxumus is to be assigned to this project, free from any questions of conflicts of interest. Your husband already set that in motion your Highness.

Angelina smiled. Good then I will go see how my daughter-in-law is doing and leave you two to figure out who you want.

Beary looked at Dr. Vallen. "There are four Bears I want immediately:

Lieutenant 3rd Maritinus and, if possible promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, SSGTs Nighthunter, and Blackpaw, to work with Maritinus as part of the security team’s leadership. Also, if he is available, Lieutenant JG Savato Artemus, he is a great weapons officer and a good pilot. He knows jump ships. I also would like Crew Chief MacIntosh, from the Saber Claw. Also as soon as Dr. Caesar Vantanus is available, I would like him."

Dr. Vallen made some notes. I’ll have them report here in 20 days then we leave for Andreas Prime. Now, may I use your transport to run some errands?

Beary looked out the window. Tell Jorgenson to take you wherever you need to go. Mom won’t mind.

Dr. Vallen smiled. Please tell her Highness I will not abuse your generosity. Beary walked to the door and nodded to his mom’s driver who smiled and opened the door for Dr. Vallen.

Angelina stood behind Beary. Gave Dr. Vallen use of my transport and driver I see.

Beary turned around and kissed his mom. I didn’t think you would mind.

Angelina laughed. Well I am stealing your wife for about a month. What else will you need son?

Beary looked at her, Put a couple of our family security bears with Pompey. Maybe, you could get Jorgenson’s daughter, Jessica, and another bear of her choice. I don’t think Gamey would allow anyone to hurt her, but I still worry, especially now.

Angelina smiled, It will be done as you wish. Jessica is good. I think Alexis Vantorious, Caesars cousin is her partner. They are Pompey’s age and they are worth at least a squad of Marines. In addition, Gamey had the staff armed when he found out his Lady was coming. She will be safe son. A dragon’s word has been given.

Mom, was I the last to know of this trip? Beary asked.

Angelina shrugged. You had other things on your mind so, of course, I didn’t want to bother you.

Beary and his mom talked while Alexa and Pompey joined them.

Alexa smiled, She is fit as a fiddle, and the cub is growing perfectly. He or she is strong and a good kicker. No problems.

Pompey looked at Beary. Dr. Vallen?

Beary shrugged, Making our travel plans. I guess yours are already made?

Pompey dropped her head. Are you mad?

Alexa answered for Beary. He better not be or I’ll kick his tail all over this house and I can still do it.

Beary held up his paws in surrender. Pricilla, of course not, and Sis you don’t need to threaten me.

Alexa smiled. It wasn’t a threat.

Captain Centaurus got transfer orders for four of his crew. He really did not mind losing Artemus. He was very good but he was not satisfied with the gunners he had gone through. Moreover, since Maxumus, Maritinus, and Vantanus left, he had become a loner. He really hated losing the other three.

Lieutenant Artemus, report to the captain’s wardroom. Centaurus said into the com unit.

Artemus arrived in just a few moments. Lieutenant Jg Artemus, reporting as ordered, Sir.

Savato, pack your bags. You, Sergeants Nighthunter, Blackpaw, and MacIntosh have been reassigned. The four of you are to report to the Academy spaceport in 20 days. You are to be given10 days leave. I am going to miss all of you. You are to take command of the NCOs until you reach your final destination. A shuttle will pick you up in 12 Cycles.

Artemus looked at him then asked. Sir, have I done something wrong?

Centaurus replied. No you were requested for a special project. Not even my sources know what.

Artemus saluted, Thank you Sir. Do you want me to send for the other three?

Centaurus shook his head. Master Chief is handling it.

Twelve cycles later four bewildered Bears boarded a shuttle for Bearilia Prime.

In the office of the superintendent of the Academy, Ben was handed his diploma and a Marine General pinned on his 2nd Lieutenant Bars. Lieutenant Maritinus, congratulations. You are now a full-fledged Marine officer. Here is your sword. Now, due to the bravery you have shown and your excellence in teaching courses here at the Academy, in accordance with special order 165, dated today, you are here by promoted to 1st Lieutenant. The General took off the gold bars of a 2nd Lieutenant and pinned on the silver bars of a 1st Lieutenant. General Zantoran smiled, Son, these were mine. Wear them well.

Ben looked at him and saluted, Sir, I will bring honor to them or die.

Zantoran grinned, Your orders are to report to Lieutenant JG Maxumus then take ten days leave.

I will go at once, General Zantoran. With your permission Superintendent I will take my leave. Ben said. The Superintendent nodded and Ben left, smiling all the way.

The Superintendent looked at Zantoran. The cub meant it. Are we not pushing him a bit fast?

Zantoran shrugged. I was asked the same thing about a certain Lieutenant JG. Do you question his promotion?

No, just wish I could have kept him longer. Actually, both of them believe it or not, they were two of my best instructors. By the way, that is in their personnel files. The Superintendent said.

    Zantoran laughed.

Ben flew to Beary’s house. He knocked on the door.

Alexa answered, Yes Lieutenant. How can I help you?

You are Dr. Maxumus. Is Pompey alright? Ben blurted out.

I am fine, Ben. Pompey said as she came out of the kitchen, followed by Angelina, Just a checkup. She saw the silver bars, Ben you made First Lieutenant!

Yes, Lady Pompey. They were General Zantoran’s. He pinned them on himself. Ben said, and then he saw Angelina and bowed. Empress Angelina.

Ben, please just call me Angelina. Angelina said.

Ben smiled, As you wish Lady Angelina. Where is Beary?

Pompey cocked her head. I sent him to the Base exchange. Why?

Ben shrugged. My orders say to report to him I am under his command.

About then Beary, came in with groceries and other items. Ben, could you help me get the rest. Then he noticed the 1st Lieutenant bars, Congratulations Ben!

Thank you, Boss. Ben said as he hurried out to the transport. Soon, everything was in the house.

Ben, you will stay for supper, will you not? I am fixing cold fish in honey nectar, with berries in cream sauce and goat cheese fries. Pompey said.

Ben grinned. If you have is enough food for your other guests.

Ben Maritinus, when have I ever sat a poor table? Pompey scolded.

Come on Ben. Let’s talk in the study before she gets mad. Beary suggested.

Beary sat down and Ben saluted. Lieutenant Maritinus, reporting as ordered.

Beary returned his salute. Ben, I have put you in a bad situation but I needed bears I could trust. You are to be in charge of security at the Andreas Shipyard while we design and build a new research starship. I have two experienced NCOs for you to be your platoon sergeants, Staff Sergeants Nighthunter, and Blackpaw. The rest will be green recruits. I will ask to have Dragons assigned.

Ben smiled. They are good NCOs. What is the bad news?

Beary replied thoughtfully. Even though it is a military build and technically a military ship, there will be a lot of civilian scientists and interference. Dr. Vallen has promised to deflect most of it. Also we need experienced builders.

Ben thought for a moment then said, Are not the Dragons and even the Dogons excellent welders and metal workers.

Beary nodded. "Yes for the exterior and some loadable compartments.

However, they are unable to reach some of the areas inside the ship."

Ben reflected on the situation then replied, Beary my people are good builders as you know. My father and some of the other village leaders might like to supply workers. But we would have to ask them. Are we to be a new marine unit?

Beary considered his reply. I am not sure. I will find out. Dr. Vallen and I will go with you. We’ll leave tomorrow.

Dr. Vallen came into the study. Am I interrupting anything?

Beary introduced them. Dr. Vallen, this is 1st Lieutenant Maritinus. He will be working with us and in charge of security.

Ben spoke, Dr. Vallen, please call me Ben. Sir, Beary says you need good builders.

    Dr. Vallen nodded.

Members of my Tribe are excellent builders. But we would have to ask the local village leaders. Beary knows my Race. Ben said.

Beary spoke next. I would like to go up there with Ben tomorrow. It would be good if you came with us.

Dr. Vallen smiled, How many, villages, are there, Ben?

Ben thought In our cluster eight and there are two other clusters within 20 KSMU, 24 villages.

Dr. Vallen nodded. Beary, several beings already know what we are doing but I don’t want to take a military shuttle up north. Also, I will need to be able to call the institute and stop there on the way north.

Beary nodded. No problem. Mom can you join us for a moment?

Yes dear. What can I do? Angelina asked.

Beary explained what he needed. Is that alright, Mom?

Angelina smiled, Only if you take some medical supplies with you.

Ben walked over and kissed her paw.

She picked up his head and kissed his cheek. You’re welcome, Ben. Then she left the room.

Ben beamed. I have been kissed by an Empress, like I was family, he said to no one.

Beary smirked. Supper should be ready.

The next morning everyone said goodbye. Pompey went with Alexa and Angelina. Beary, Ben and Dr. Vallen left for the north with two stopovers.

That afternoon Artemus and the Sergeants arrived. Artemus saw to the needs of the NCOs and went to find Beary or Ben, He found out they had went north so he followed.

Though they had a five cycle head start, he beat them to Ben’s village. He had purchased six cases of Honey Apple Nectar as a gift for Ben’s family. Ben’s father greeted him like a long lost son and was very pleased by his gift. He then sent Savato to the hot springs to relax.

Savato beamed as the ladies smiled at his approach. Maybe this was not Heaven, but to him it was close.

Beary and his group arrived four Cycles later. Ben greeted his father, who saw the 1st Lieutenant bars.

Son, what is this Honor you bring to your people?! Sire Maritinus asked.

These insignias were those of General Zantoran. He pinned them on personally. Ben said. Father you remember Lieutenant Jg Maxumus.

Beary, you are always welcome in our lodges. Where is the lady Pompey? Sire Maritinus asked.

Beary smiled, She is with cub and has gone with my mother to Andreas Prime. My mother sends these gifts to honor her friend. Eight large crates with medical supplies were unloaded.

Tears ran down Sire Maritinus face, Tell your mother she has honored us greatly. He signaled twenty of his warriors to take the crates to their P.A.

Sire, may I introduce Dr. Vallen? He also has a gift for you and the other villages in the area. Beary said.

Dr. Vallen signaled for his crates to be unloaded, each labeled for the villages they were to go to. He had the first presented to Sire Maritinus.

Dr. Vallen nodded. Sire Maritinus, this is a small Vallen model 10,000 Generator. It will supply electricity for your entire village.

Sire Maritinus was overwhelmed. He understood that because the gifts would come through his village, the honor would be his.

Beary walked over. Sire this gift is not as great, but it is my gift. It was a small pin made of platinum and gold with red star stones in the shape of a Paw.

Sire Maritinus grabbed Beary in his strong arms and almost crushed him as he wept for joy. Then he let out a roar. We celebrate tonight!

    The village came alive.

Ben smiled, Well no business tonight. Dr. Vallen, I hope your heart is strong.

Dr. Vallen looked puzzled. It is.

Beary smirked, Just take it slow.

Beary, you will stay in our lodge since you are married. Is Dr. Vallen? Sire Maritinus asked.

Dr. Vallen shook his head. No, I am a widower.

Ben winked Beary just shook his head.

Artemus thought I should go and tell them hello. But then one of the young ladies brought him a glass of cherry nectar.

Sire Maritinus turned to Ben and Beary. Artemus is here at the hot springs. You can go and join him. Dr. Vallen, please go with them. The mineral hot springs are good for you. Suits are there that will fit you. Beary, show your ring.

Beary smiled, Of course, Sire. I fear my wife.

Sire Maritinus laughed, The sign of a happy Boar.

Artemus waved at his two friends and the older gentlebear.

Beary was the first to climb in, showing his ring. The young ladies frowned.

How did you find us, and are Nighthunter and the others with you? Beary asked.

Artemus looked strange as Ben and Dr. Vallen climbed in. Three young ladies came over and washed Ben’s back. Four gently surrounded Dr. Vallen and, despite his protest, gently washed his back, front, and head. Another brought him a drink of cherry nectar. Beary, pored his own from a bottle into a glass set next to him. Artemus smiled. Should I have brought them? Not that I think they would mind.

Beary shrugged, No, they have 10 days leave coming. We’ll meet them at the base.

What is going on, Boss? Artemus said absent minded.

Well, you are going to help me and Dr. Vallen design and build a new research starship and a new Dagger, designated a purple Dagger. Beary said.

So I am working for you. Who does Ben work for? Artemus asked.

Nighthunter and Blackpaw belong to him. MacIntosh belongs to you. And, if you don’t mind you work for me. I work for Dr. Vallen.

Artemus smiled, Thank the Creator. Great! I was going nuts on the Saber Claw without you two. What about Caesar?

Beary nodded. He is due to meet us in about six weeks, on Andreas Prime.

The celebration started a cycle later. Roasted wild hog and several types of fish and nectar were served along, with various roots. Sire Maritinus wore his new pin. The P. A. wore her new stethoscope around her neck to honor the guests. About 2200 Cycles, Dr. Vallen was getting very tired.

Sire Maritinus called three young Polarian females over. Take care of our elderly guest see to his comfort and warmth.

Beary smiled. In addition, he hoped the good Dr.’s heart was strong enough. He was sure Dr. Vallen wasn’t use to the customs of Ben’s Tribe.

Artemus stood and thanked his host. Three Polarian ladies laughed as they followed him.

Ben nodded in Artemus direction, He should take one for a wife. Anyone of them would have him.

Beary looked at Ben. When will you choose a mate?

Ben shrugged. If I survive a few more years around you, then I will choose. For now, why disappoint any of them. With that he stretched and headed for bed.

Beary watched as young Polarian females followed Ben. Soon, only the Chief and Beary were sitting by the fire.

Sire Maritinus looked at Beary. May I ask a question?

Beary stared into the fire. Yes Sire.

I know Artemus is here because he feels this is home, since he has none and he is always welcome. This is Ben’s home. Dr. Vallen wants something that I assume will benefit him and our people. However, you wish to be lying with your wife. Why are you here? Sire Maritinus asked.

Beary shrugged. Sire, it is business. May I speak of it?

They were alone, so Sire Maritinus nodded.

Beary began, I am responsible for designing and building a new ship. Ben is the security officer for the project. Artemus is also working with me. I need to find good workers to work with our Dragons and Dogons and a few of our craftsbears.

Sire Maritinus smiled. I hoped you were here for such a purpose. Fishing has been hurt because prices are down. We refuse to over fish, so many of our young boars are out of work. I and the other village chief can give you a 700 bear work force if you can use it.

Beary contemplated his answer. I do not know what the government will pay, but I will personally give each village 83,000 credits as a bonus from my own resources.

Why would you do this? Sire Maritinus asked.

Beary shrugged, I respect you and your sons. You have treated me well. I wish to ensure that your trust is not found to be lost in me, nor that you are in anyway dishonored.

Maritinus looked at him. Such a sum will ensure that I am not dishonored. The Vallen generators also ensure the villages honor. But can you afford such a gift?

Beary thought. Sire, I could give more but too much would also dishonor you.

Sire Maritinus smiled. If the villages pooled their money we could open a regional clinic. Would you support such a move?

Beary nodded and then said, If that is the decision, I have a foundation that could give you two million credits and my family’s Foundation would match it with another two million credits.

Sire Maritinus grinned. Hold your offer, till I secure the clinic. Then give it as a gift.

The next day, Beary, Dr. Vallen, and Artemus went hunting while Ben and his father went to a huge regional tribal council meeting. Ben presented the job proposal. There were cheers.

Then Sire Maritinus distributed the Vallen Generators to the different village Chieftains. My Fellow Chiefs, if we accepted this offer, we may also be able to build a medical clinic or small hospital, if we agree to do so.

The discussion raged about the need for a medical clinic. Finally, the Chieftains reached a decision. That is when he told them he had the financing to build it. Beary had already talked to his foundation and had his money transferred to an account in the name of the clinic. His father had done the same.

The Chieftains roared in pleasure. The building of the hospital and clinic would create temporary jobs, as would the shipyard. Every village would benefit in some way.

    CHAPTER 2

    Andreas Prime

P OMPEY WAS HAPPY to have two young ladies with her. They were fun and liked to talk about boars. They knew stories about Beary and Caesar when they were young. Gamey did not see the need for them.

Empress, do you not trust me or my staff to protect my lady? Gamey demanded.

Angelina sighed. Gamey I know you would die for your Lady Pompey and her unborn cub, as would the household staff. I believe Timothy would also.

I know he would and so would all Dragons and Dogons on Andreas Prime. Gamey grumbled

Angelina tried again. She had not intended, nor had Beary, to offend Gamey, but Dragons take their duties very seriously. Would you deny a great, great granddaughter of Page Wilford Jorgenson from serving your mistress or a great, great granddaughter of Justus Vantorious?

Gamey lowered his head in memory of the brave warriors that died defending the family so many years ago. My Empress, I am sorry, it is just that I was afraid the young Prince did not trust me. Oh did I tell you we had not one but two eggs?

No how wonderful! When are they due to hatch? Angelina asked.

Gamey smiled Our first hatched a month ago. He is well and old Grey Beard has already started his training. He is purple and green. His name is Gisfrid.

Angelina pondered or a moment. "Gisfrid, meaning Pledge-Peace, I like it. It is a good name."

Gamey beamed, Widja wants to give our next hatching to the young prince or princess to be born, with your permission.

Angelina thought and replied, That is for you to decide, but the Dragon is not to be enslaved as under the old law.

Gamey bowed his head, No, my Empress. Oh look Widja comes.

Widja landed and approached them. Your Highness, it is time for your Council meeting.

Angelina sat in her seat in the council chamber. Next to her was Gray Talon. She held her scepter. On it, were three figures holding a blue stone, with large red stones circling, it. The first figure was a golden dragon the second was silver Dogon. The third figure was a platinum white water dragon of the Northern Ocean and land mass.

The Frigorific Dragons refused to join the Dragon Council. They kept to the cold regions of Andreas Prime were they held allegiance only to themselves and the Emperor or Empress.

Gray Talon was pleased that some of the Red Paw clan was coming to Andreas Prime. He had an idea. Your Highness we have 700 Polarians coming to build this Starship with us, is that correct?

Angelina looked at him. She was surprised by the question. Yes Sir Gray Talon. Why?

My Lady, all dragons wish to belong to something greater than themselves. The Maxmimus joined with the Dragons and Dogons but did not cherish the harsh cold of the northern waters and plains. This is the land of the Frigorific Dragons. What if we offered land to the Polarians that work on the ship in this region? Gray Talon said. Others agreed.

Angelina looked at the staff before she spoke. This is a hard question. This council can’t speak for either party. If you wish me to negotiate with both groups I am prepared to try.

Gray Talon called for a vote it was unanimous.

Angelina looked up. Very well, I will notify first the Polarian leadership. Then we will go north and pose the question to the Frigorific Dragon clans.

Other smaller items of business were addressed and the meeting was adjourned. Angelina waited for the chambers to clear. Widja came to her. My Lady, what is wrong?

Angelina sneered, Widja, I have been taught a lesson about politics. Will you give me a moment before we go home?

Widja bowed, Of course my Lady.

Angelina walked into Gray Talon’s office. Speaking very softly she said to him, You maneuvered me almost into making promises I could not keep.

Gray Talon knew he almost went too far. My Lady, I am sorry. I should have discussed it with you first. But the idea hit me out there. I didn’t take time to really formulate it.

Angelina shook her head. There is more you are not telling me. I have lived with a politician for 70 years.

Gray Talon sighed, "Under the old Empire, the frigorific clans served the Empire. They are on the brink of fighting among themselves. Some of our members do not care, yet they or part of the balance. There are two factions. One is under the leadership of Snow Fang, the other, Ice Dancer. Worse
