A students’ most awaited period is to complete school education after Std 12th and enter the dynamic world of college education.

So here you are stepping out into college life.

While life at college seems to be a mix of enthusiasm and foundation for career development, the dilemma about which college to choose and which course to choose from the wide array of career streams available after 12th only increases. This underscores the need for exploring the various career options available and their suitability with reference to:-

• Learning about you.

• Identifying your skills.

• Knowing your weakness.

• Utilizing your talents.

• Your career dreams.

There are now various options in front of you:

1. Continue in your chosen stream and accordingly choose your higher education.

If you have science with PCM, you can go for higher education in many professional and educational courses like engineering, architecture, design, Information Technology, and pure sciences degrees in physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics etc.

If you have science with PCB you can go for MBBS, Allied Medical fields like Dentistry, Ayurveda, Veterinary etc.

If you have Commerce, you can go for higher education in B Com, BBA, B Com LLB, Eco Hons.

If you have Humanities you can go for BA in your chosen subject or can move to professional courses after 12th.

2. Diversify your current stream and choose a higher education.

After Std12th, you may realise or find through an aptitude assessment that your interests have changed and you may want to explore certain professions with different streams. These switches may be possible.Ex from science you can move to commerce stream.

3. Appear for a Test Prep Exam/Entrance Exam

The preparation for most test prep exams start right after or in many cases even during Std12th.Many colleges and universities use these exams as a tool due to large number of applicants. The exam may be online or manual.

4. Study Vocational Course.

Alternatively you can opt for a Vocational Course like Travel and Tourism, Nursing, Office Management etc.

5. Plan of action incase none of the above work

There are chances that you do not get the college or course of your choice. In such cases, you need other parallel options like self employment or diploma courses. Professional services may be needed for planning these.

STEPPING TOWARDS THE RIGHT CAREER

Now that we have seen the various career choices available after 12th, it is important to understand how should one go about finalising a career for themselves.

The crossroads of "stepping towards the right career" emerge twice in front of a school student.One when he chooses the desired or correct stream in Std XII, two right after Std 12th when he chooses the desired colleges.

Apart from these some take up just about any job that they came across after their graduation due to desperation for work or a salary.

There may not be an exact formula to understand the formula for success of a career one can overcome many hurdles that may eventually lead to a flourishing career through research, study and a scientific approach and seeking professional guidance.

A career can be the desired/right career, when your capabilities get utilized to the maximum, which is in sync with your aptitudes and personality. If these parameters can be achieved, it is a perfect recipe to contribute to a flourishing career.

A decent pay cheque comes a perk with every career where an individual is doing the best of their capability. Financial boost is the major factor in motivating one towards their work.

The right career not only contributes to your own individual growth but also allows you to be able to contribute to society as well.In this process of continuously contributing and learn, one also achieves what is known as social success

To summarize the above understandings,

"any career which can offer you an opportunity and scope to exploit your capabilities, talents, individual growth, good salary and social success and is the RIGHT CAREER.

It may however, seem difficult for a 15 year old to gauge these pointers at a young age.

The following factors can help you to identify a right career for yourself:-

(a) Understand your own Aptitude:-

It is well researched now that the potential aptitude of each person is best judged by themselves. Each individual is born with specific talents and aptitude which needs to be identified at the right time. Our aptitude and personality is actually our true capability which direct us towards the right career. Our exam system evaluates us on written exams, which may be one’s weakness but at the same time the same person could be a great orator. It is always important to understand one’s true potential and not get affected with minor failures.

Our personalities majorly can be classified as extroverts or introverts.Large number of people who are introverts believe or think a career can only be crafted well for extroverts. However in reality some options that can be explored for this personality trait include Network Manager, Public Relation Manager, Writing, or any kind
