Orlando N. Gomez

The Opprobrium of Wanton Behavior - Orlando N. Gomez

    Homie And His Grandson

During a cool tropical night in a place named Saint Kitts, located in the heart of the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea, there was an old man by the name of Homie trying to help his grandson get to sleep. The grandson insisted on listening to a story from his grandfather, in which he could tell how he got to the island. The child said, Grandpa, I want you to tell me a story. I know that you know a lot of stories from your country.

The old man looked at his grandson, and while he gave him a smile, he felt very happy after hearing that his grandson said that he had a lot to tell him about his country. Therefore, he said, From 1492 all through the 1700s, many people were forced to leave Africa against their will. They were forced to come here, because the people who were responsible for bringing them here had better weapons and much more money than Africans had during that period of time. In other words, these people were very powerful. One morning, a ship departed from an African port and headed to America with 250 people inside. Among these people were 25 women and 175 men, including 50 heavily armed crew members. Before the ship left Africa’s port, each one of the African people got a portion of food. They had to survive the trip with that food, because they would not get a second portion during the trip. The conditions inside the ship were horrible. People had to be stacked as if they were bananas placed on top of a pickup truck, ready to be sold in any of our streets. People were on top of each other because the ship was not big enough for all these people. The sea waves were very strong. Sometimes a lot of water had to be poured out of the ship, and when that had to be done, the crew members forced the Africans to do it. Those who were too slow at this task were whipped until they could speed up the work. As a result, when the ship got to the port at the island of Barbados, only two hundred people were inside the ship. Fifty Africans had died from starvation and infection caused by injuries, such as cuts caused by the whips and chains used to tie them up so that they could not attempt to escape. As soon as the ship got to port, the captain ordered the crew to give some food to the 150 people left. In that group were 15 women and 135 men. Each one of them got a piece of codfish, some cornmeal, and animal fat. This was given to them twice a day for two weeks. The reason why they were getting that portion of food twice a day was because the captain wanted to make them look good and healthy at the time the slave buyers, who were coming from the Southern United States, came to see them. Two weeks later, the slave buyers came to see them. They purchased 125 slaves, including 5 women, leaving out 25 slaves, including 10 women. Among those ten women was a slave woman named Corina who was not taken to the United States, because she was very ill. Corina was kidnapped in her village by slave hunters, when she was one month pregnant. She lost the baby the first week after the ship got to port and was kept in this point of arrival. Her husband was not so lucky. He was one of the slaves who had to leave the point of arrival with the slave buyers. You know, Grandson, the slaves who were left on the island at one point had to be disseminate in the region. That is why it is so important for young people like you to know that the blood from the people found in this region is one blood, just one blood. This is the blood of our ancestors; keep that in mind, Grandson. Corina Bundelle was my great-great-great-great-grandmother. My daughter and I are the direct representation of Corina’s family in this part of the world.

After Homie finished telling his story to his grandson, the grandson asked, But where is my aunt? She was the only sister my mother had before she died. Why she is not with us?

Homie said, My daughter got married. Now she has a husband who gave her another last name. But I always said to her that the family’s tradition is not to give up our last name, because Bundelle is the name of our family’s roots, and we should keep it forever.

Then the little boy rubbed his right hand over his eyes as if he was ready to sleep. But suddenly, he removed his hand from his eyes, and while his two eyes were semi-closed, he said, Grandpa, what happened to Corina’s husband? Where was he taken?

After the little boy asked the question, Homie realized that he needed to spend more time explaining to his grandson what had happened to Corina’s husband, before he could go to sleep. Therefore, Homie said, "Well, Corina’s husband was taken to a small town near the Mississippi River in North America. He was forced to work in a cotton field. Then, five years later, Corina got in touch with one of the crew members of the ship that shipped her here from Africa, and according to this crew member, he heard the captain saying that Corina’s husband was one of the most handsome and intelligent slaves the buyer had inside his cotton plantation. He also said that the slave master allowed Corina’s husband to dress as a free man. However, one day the slave master found out that one of his daughters was in love with Corina’s husband. Indeed, Corina’s husband did not know that the girl was in love with him. Then, one day, the slave master went to his daughter’s room and found her writing a poem in which she was expressing the love she had for Corina’s husband. As a result of that one morning, the slave master called Corina’s husband to his office, and while they were inside the office, the slave master asked him, ‘What you do if one of these women asks you to have sex with her?’ After the slave master asked the question, Corina’s husband realized the implications he would have to face if he had said that he would have sex with that woman. Therefore, he did not hesitate to say, ‘Master, I will never have sex with a woman who is better than me. I am a slave, and slaves should have sex with slaves only.’ After the slave master heard Corina’s husband saying what he needed to say in order for him to save his life, the slave master said, ‘Good boy, good boy, you did very well. Now go back to work.’ Corina’s husband followed the order and went back to work. Then the slave master went to one of his men and asked him to keep an eye on Corina’s husband, because he did not want him close to his daughters. Corina’s husband did not know that he was followed; therefore, he continued with his normal life. One Sunday, after the slave master’s family had gotten back from church, Corina’s husband was cleaning one of the cowsheds. He had no shirt on. He was showing his strong muscles and his well-formed body. Then suddenly, a beautiful young girl came his way. She was very provocative. At the time she got close to him, she said, ‘I always dreamed of having a strong man like you. I can secretly be all yours if you want. I don’t care what my parents think about it. I just want you.’ As she was saying those words to Corina’s husband, she jumped on him, trying to kiss him. But he avoided her, saying, ‘No, I cannot do that. I am a slave, and slaves only do that with another slave.’ Then the young girl said, ‘Take me, because now I became your slave. Take me. I am your slave.’ Corina’s husband said, ‘No, you cannot be my slave. Go, go. You cannot be my slave.’ As Corina’s husband said those words, he ran away from the young girl and went inside his house. He still did not realize that someone was following him. Then, that same day, during the night, after he went to sleep, the young girl came out from her room through the window. She dropped a big blanket over her body without wearing anything under it. She had no underwear on. She was completely naked under that blanket. As she opened the little house’s door, she saw Corina’s husband, who was already asleep. Then she got close to him, and after she took a piece of a stick and touched him on his private parts, he jumped from his canopy. He was wearing only a small pair of pajamas. As soon as he got up and saw this girl inside his place, he said, ‘Young girl, you should not be here. Is not good for you to be here; go to sleep. You can get sick. It is very cold.’ While he was saying that, she said, ‘No, I will sleep with you. You have to sleep with me.’ After she said that, she then removed the blanket and said, ‘What, you don’t like this? Are you going to tell me that you don’t like this? I know you like it. Take it now, because you will never get one like this again.’ While she was saying that, she jumped on him and started to kiss him. At the time, she was opening her legs as if she was inviting him to act up on what he did not want to do. Then suddenly, someone opened the door. This was one of the slave master’s workers. As soon as he came inside the house and saw the girl completely naked, trying to get on top of Corina’s husband, he held Corina’s husband by his neck and said, ‘The master might want to know what the hell you was doing with his daughter inside this filthy house.’ The young girl said, ‘This is none of your damn business. I don’t care what the master say, or what you think about it. You and the master can go to hell. I am sick of you all.’ Corina’s husband was taken to the master’s office, and after being whipped more than one hundred times, the following day, he was
