Biblical Anatomy of the Mind - Nkosinathi Malevu

AN UNRENEWED MIND CAN COST YOU YOUR LIFE

Apostle Paul in the 2nd letter to the Corinthians, 7th chapter from verse 1 told the Corinthians to cleanse themselves from the filthiness of the Spirit. This means if your mind is not renewed; you will continue living a filthy lifestyle. The word holy also means clean and unholy means unclean (Ephesians 5:6-7).

Unclean lifestyle (which is an unholy life) prevents people from enjoying their inheritance in the kingdom of God (Ephesians 5:5). Uncleanness is mentioned amongst the things that prevent people from their inheritance. I believe part of your inheritance is to eat from the tree of life in the New Jerusalem. But the bible makes it very clear that unclean people will not enter and will not eat from the tree of life (Revelation 22:14). The filthy will not enter (the unholy whose mind is not renewed.

Renewal of the mind helps us to present our bodies and our spirits holy to God. I said it before, and I am saying it again, no one can renew your mind for you, it is your responsibility.

The question is how can you renew the mind if you do not know what the mind is and you do not know how does the mind function?

    WHAT IS THE MIND?

I would like you to know and understand what the mind is (according to what the bible says) but I want you to first know, what the mind is not. The mind is not the brain. The brain is a physical organ but the mind is not a physical organ. People think with their minds and the thoughts are expressed in the physical world through the brain. Thought are not stored in the brain but in the mind.

If thoughts and memories were stored in the brain, when people die they should forget everything they have ever done and never recall anything that has happened while they were on earth. When a physical body dies the brain dies as well. According to the bible the departed spirits (dead) can remember what they did on earth. If they can remember even when the brain cells are dead, that means the mind is the store house of our thoughts.

In the story of Lazarus and the rich man; when the rich man was in hell he could still remember his family, which means he still had his memory fully functioning (Luke 16:20-31).

In Isaiah 14:9-10 the dead kings in these verses can still recognise one of the kings who was very strong on earth but now in the underworld (after death), this king has become as weak as these other kings. So the process of thinking is not done in the brain but it is done in the mind.

The doctors of the brain can only see which part of the brain is active when your mind expresses its thoughts; the brain then becomes active so that those thoughts could be executed in the physical world. When a person has a brain problem it does not mean he cannot think, but the thoughts of his mind cannot be expressed in the physical
