I’ve been married for 42 years. We have 2 daughters and 2 cats. The oldest daughter lives near us in Tulsa, OK with 2 dogs. The younger one lives in California with her wife and 2 cats. We feel very blessed with our lives, our family and our friends. A few years ago I began writing books and fell in love with sharing my ideas. My daughters encouraged me along with a few friends who liked my writing. I decided to take a chance by publishing them. So here it goes with my first book. I already have two others written and a book of poetry. I’m a little out of the box for my age. I like tattoos and piercings. I love loud music, especially 70’s music. I enjoy being around children and love life in general.

    Summer Vacation - Linda Gee

    CHAPTER ONE

My name is Samantha Lord, I just turned eighteen years old, and my friends and family call me Sam. I have a black cloud over my head. I am misunderstood and feel unloved. My only salvation is I have three great friends; three of us have been close since kindergarten.

My best friend is Veronica, but she goes by Ronnie. My father works for Ronnie’s father along with many other attorneys. I consider my family middle class, but my Dad is always complaining they aren’t paid enough. We live in Minneapolis, Minnesota decent summers but cold winters.

I have a younger sister, Alexandria who is fourteen. I also have a younger brother, Raymond who is eight years old. They are the favorites in the family. They don’t get in trouble, they mind our parents, they do what they are told which is a lot less than what I am expected to do.

I seem to be in trouble often. Okay, maybe I am somewhat of a trouble-maker. I don’t care what people think about me or who I hurt in most of the choices I make in life or what comes out of my mouth. My mom says I need to learn to think before I speak. I have little to no patience for anything that happens in our home with my siblings.

We live in an average two story house. There were three bedrooms; my sister and I share one, which I think is ridiculous. I am a senior in high school but, none the less, that is the way it is. I have dreams like any other teenage girl. My brother gets a room to himself. I want love and happiness. I even want a family someday.

I need freedom. I need to see where life takes me without having to take care of my brother and sister. I want to see the world. I want to see if I can be me without feeling bad about it or thinking I am useless, unwanted and unloved. I need to know someone is out there for me. Maybe there is and maybe there isn’t that perfect someone, but I have to try.

My friends and I are about to graduate from high school. We have been planning our senior trip for over ten years. We have been working part- time. We save our allowances, our Christmas money and, even birthday money. I even begged, borrowed and stole for this trip. We have worked hard preparing for our summer fling.

Of course, Ronnie, who I sometimes call ‘Ron’, comes from a wealthy family, so she didn’t have to work. She did work and saved her own money to prove a point to her father. She is not like what you would think a rich girl would be. She is down to earth, very giving, and kind.

Ronnie’s parents are divorced, and she lives with her father. Ronnie’s mother moved to Florida a few years ago and Ronnie visits her a couple times a year, but they are not close. Ronnie loves animals and plans to attend college to be a veterinarian. The idea appalls her father. He wants her to go into law, like him and his father before him, but Ronnie has different plans. Ronnie’s decisions usually are anything her father disagrees with.

She has three step siblings with her father’s new wife. They are total brats and get anything they want. Her stepmother or ‘stepwitch’, as we call her, treats her civil but distant. I mean she doesn’t beat her but she feels more like their housekeeper’s daughter. Their housekeeper/cook, Mabel, took pity on Ronnie when her mother left. Her father was gone most of the time, so Mabel taught her how to cook, clean, and keep house. Ronnie loved helping her. Mabel loves Ronnie and has given her more attention and love than anyone else. Ronnie spent as much time as possible at our house while we were growing up. Ronnie is my best friend, we are BFF’s.

Katherine Patterson is the oldest of the group, as she always reminds us. We let her think she runs the group it keeps the peace between us. She hates her name so she has always been Kat. Kat’s mom is a single mother, and Kat has never met her father, she tells us he lives out of the country somewhere. He sends her mother money occasionally and sometimes exotic gifts.

She has done without the nicer things most of her life. So her attitude is she takes what she wants and says what she pleases, no matter what. Don’t get me wrong, we love Kat. She is a lot like me, but I don’t think she knows who she is yet, well, neither do I, chuckling to myself, nor do Ronnie or Abby.

Abigail Hall lives just around the corner from me. Her father owns the local grocery store. Their finances are kind of up and down, but mostly in the same financial bracket as my family. As her friends, we all call her ‘Abby’. She worked part time for her father as well as working as a waitress on weekend to earn money. She has a younger sister, Ashley who is the family princess. She has been in beauty pageants and won most of the local ones.

Her father is a cranky old man and rules the house with an iron fist. Her mother adores Ashley. Abby feels inferior and left out most of the time. She considers herself the ugly one; she is built like her mother - small waist, and larger hips. She has a pretty face but doesn’t think so. She hides it with her long bangs and rough hair cut which always hangs in her face. She studies very hard and is a straight-’A’ student. Her parents never make a big deal out of her grades or her achievements.

Kat, Ronnie, and I bonded the first day of kindergarten. We were the misfits. We were mouthy little girls who didn’t let anyone push us around. The teacher made the mistake of putting us together in a group. We ruled the group; the boys in our group didn’t stand a chance. We pounded their egos and threatened to do bodily harm to them if they didn’t do as we said.

For a while, it worked well, until one of the little piss ants told on us. Little did we know then, he would grow to be the hottest boy in our class. He was the most popular, and he loved to put the three of us down every chance he got, as long as he had friends around to protect him, that is. I guess our lives could have been a lot different if we had treated him nicer, but little girls didn’t like dirty little boys at five years old.

Abby joined our group near the end of our kindergarten year. She was quiet and no one ever noticed her. No one even knew her name until she joined our group. We changed her life. Well we didn’t change it, but we gave her someone to cling to. She felt like we did; out of sorts, unwanted, unloved. We stood by each other and when one was in trouble or down, we were all there to help. We never abandoned each other, ever.

We talked about college and our futures. We spent time together as we grew up telling each other our deep dark secrets, at least most of them. We planned college together but our senior year our plans changed. Our career choices changed. I planned to go to college at the University of Tulsa, in Oklahoma; Ronnie was going to the University of Oklahoma, in Norman.

We wanted to be far away from home but the career I wanted and the career she wanted didn’t seem to work out college-wise. We would be close. The reason I chose Tulsa was for a law degree, and it wasn’t because of my father, it was because I could make enough money to get away and stay away.

I told myself I would never be like my parents; I would be independent and work for the homeless and unemployed. Oh, hell, I don’t know who I was kidding most of the time. I didn’t like law; I just didn’t know what I wanted. I don’t even know who I am yet. I finally chose law just to shut my parents up. I can always change courses later on. First, no matter what I have to get my basics.

Abby’s plans are to go to Cornell; she is smart and worked hard to make the best grades possible. It still wasn’t good enough to get the so-wanted attention from her parents. Her father was just happy Abby got a full scholarship so he didn’t have to pay for it. He was so mean and the most selfish dirt bag of our fathers.

We never stayed at Abby’s house, never, not one time, do I remember ever spending the night there. Maybe because he wouldn’t allow it, I’m not sure. We stole what we wanted from him most of the time; it was easy; Abby knew when her father was out doing errands or not watching when he was in the store. We were drinking beer by fourteen years old. Too bad, he didn’t have liquor in his store.

Kat, well she was accepted to several colleges but isn’t sure what she wants. I believe she plans on a local college, the University of Wisconsin. She thinks her mother needs her to stay close to help her. Kat wanted to be loved so badly, she accepted any attention she got from her mom.

She acts tough to hide that pain deep inside her. We were afraid she would miss out on the college life by being so close to home. Her mother works two, sometimes three jobs to give Kat what she wants. She also gets money from her boyfriends when they move in for a while, which is kind of creepy.

Her mom loves her but she is rarely at home. They never did anything together. When we stayed at Kat’s house, we were always unsupervised and got in a lot of trouble, that’s when the drinking part came in, along with smoking and other things.

When Kat’s mom wasn’t working, she was at the bars with men. She brought so many different men home. By the time Kat was ten, she had watched her mother have sex and she knew every part of a man’s anatomy and she told us all the gory details. Sometimes the men knew she was watching and even preformed for her. She had some scary episodes where those scumbags went for her. She always seemed to get away. Kat’s mom did try to protect her from them.

Kat was smart too; she had a lot of common since. She did well in school. She studied, and she wanted her mother to be proud and she always told her how proud of her she was. But her mother drank a lot and forgot about Kat. Sometimes she’d leave her waiting at school or movie theaters for hours.

We planned months before graduation where we would spend our summer of freedom. We all wanted different things, we all wanted sun and fun but wanted different places. We had different reasons for our choices. We had to draw lots to see where we would go.

We each put in our desired destinations. We had to research the route to get there, the highways and how long a drive to get there. We had to figure the cost of the trip, housing and food, and the sites to visit in the area. We put our choices in a box and, we let my little brother draw. He pulled out Florida, which was Kat’s choice.

We each agreed upon the choice and did further research. We chose an affordable condominium that would sleep four in Clearwater, Florida. We hoped we could find part-time jobs to help once we got there.

The condominium on line looked great online. It had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a small kitchen, and a dining area. It was fully furnished, including a television, pots, pans, and dishes, and even a washer and dryer. It worked out to be a little over $1,500. each for the whole summer, all bills paid.

Of course, Kat was the one most lacking in funds. Now we had to decide who got what bedroom. One bedroom had two twin beds and the bath was in the hall. The other bedroom was a king-size bed and the bath was in the room.

We talked it over deciding on the two in the master bedroom would pay the entire amount above the $1500, that made it easier to choose who went where. So, Kat and Abby chose the bedroom with the twin beds. Ronnie and I would share the king. Ronnie came up the idea so she could actually help Kat out on cost.

Now, our plans were set. We would leave on June 1, and arrive there in two days. Ronnie had a SUV, and so we decided to take her car only, so we would all have to rely on her to get us around. But we found out we could rent scooters for a nominal fee daily, weekly, or monthly, so we thought we would be fine.

We only had to take our clothes and personal effects for the trip. The condo supplied hair dryers in both bathrooms. We would be on the Gulf side at Clearwater Point. It was a beachfront condo with a swimming pool and a hot tub, and we were to be on the third floor. We were so excited we could hardly contain ourselves.

We had been taking nonperishable food from Abby’s father’s store for months., non perishable items, canned meats, cereal, rice, canned vegetables, and anything that would not spoil or go bad for some time. We decided to hit it the last week and get things like chips, sodas, water, candy bars, and snacks for the trip. We figured we would have food to last a couple of weeks or longer at least.

My parents weren’t happy about the four of us going without an adult, but three of us were already eighteen. My parents couldn’t stop me from going but they didn’t like our plans at all. They wanted me to save my money for college.

Of course, my mother ranted and raved for days but finally let it rest hoping the experience would be good for me, to live on my own and be responsible for myself. I got Mom’s final okay by telling her we would write home often. Kat’s mom was more open-minded than the rest of the parents. Abby’s parents acted like mine, they wanted her to save her money for college. That way her cheep father didn’t have to pay anything. I bet he wouldn’t anyway, I am sure Abby would have to work while in school. Ronnie wasn’t eighteen yet, but she had written permission from her father to go. Her ‘stepwitch’ was so excited to get rid of her for three months.

Besides, when we returned, we would all be off to college. My brother and sister were excited I would be gone too. I liked to pester them most of the time. I was the instigator instead of the little sister or brother being the pest it was the opposite in our house.

I thought of myself as average looking, I was five feet, seven inches tall, I weighed about 120 pounds, sometimes more, I had boobs, and they were just a little on the small side. I wore my hair short, it was blond and curly. I had tons of freckles across my nose and cheeks, and I hate them. The more I was in the sun the more freckles showed up and the blonder I became.

I didn’t like the guys in high school; I never had a serious boy friend and didn’t go to parties. I wasn’t asked out and no dates for dances or prom. I was Abby’s companion when Kat and Ronnie were on dates. I don’t mean we were gay but we kept each other company on those lonely nights. We drank too much beer, ate too much junk food, and partied by ourselves. Abby and I had low self-esteems about ourselves. I was depressed so much of the time growing up I was a trouble-maker. Any attention I got, good or bad was good for me.

Abby was built different than the rest of us. She wasn’t fat; she had her mother’s wide hips, a small waist and small top, but she was only five foot four inches tall. Her height made her look larger than she really was.

Kat was the tallest; she was about five foot nine inches and a little larger frame than me, but some things of mine she could wear and vice versa. She had huge boobs, and an awesome body, with an athletic build. Boys loved her body. She was, I will say just a little bit promiscuous.

Ronnie was the cutest of of us with a tight little body. Boys adored her too. She had the cutest face and no freckles or blemishes. She had a sweet smile, with perfectly white, straight teeth and large brown eyes. Her hair always looked great even messed up. Her perfect complexion was obnoxious to me. She was flirty with the boys; she got what she wanted and sometimes unwanted attention. I think I should hate her but I love her, she was my best friend. It seems the rich girl is the cute slender one who seems to have it all, but she didn’t have it all.

Abby and I bonded because we didn’t know how to talk to people, and Kat and Ronnie did. They bull shitted their way through life. They weren’t included in the popular groups but they seemed to manage to smash parties and make the best of it.

Most of the girls resented Ronnie because she was wealthy, and wore cute fashionable clothes and boys always looked her way making their girlfriends furious. She drove a decent car but she didn’t have that cheerleader attitude. She pissed most of the popular girls off.

We didn’t care what those girls said or did. We assumed they were jealous of us. Kat wanted those girls approval though but they didn’t want her, she was from the wrong side of town. Kat was poor and needy and had a bad reputation. Kat and Ronnie were known for sleeping around. Especially Kat sleeping with guys who had girlfriends just to make a point

We had all brought CD’s to play, and we had mapped out our route and, planned where to stay at night. We were on the road and so excited. We sang and played games. We took turns driving and paying for gas, but Ronnie filled it up before we left. She had a credit card from her father for gas so that would be a lot of help for us.

Ronnie’s father also booked our hotel for the trip and paid for it as a gift for us. He tried to act the nice man, but I think he was happy all the quarreling and usually problems in the house would subside for the summer.

Ronnie is so kind hearted and I knew it hurt her feelings so often, the way he doted on his three other kids and not on her. I mean, he loved her I think. He took care of her and gave her anything she asked for, but Love and attention was the one thing she lacked. She confided in me, but I know she held so much back as I did, and I am sure as Kat and Abby did also. We all had our secrets, our dark cloud that we told no one about, parts we kept to ourselves. We shared almost anything except our shame.

We had our stuff packed and loaded into Ronnie’s car by 6:00am. The drive went smooth with no unexpected concerns. We arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee, about ten o’clock that evening. We were all exhausted from the drive. We had stopped for food a few hours earlier, so we went straight to bed. We slept sound all night long.

We woke about six o’clock, had our continental breakfast, and were back on the road by seven o’clock, heading for Clearwater, Florida. We were so tired and talked less. We even were a little cranky with each other. Ronnie tried to keep spirits up by telling jokes and making plans for our summer holiday.

We arrived at seven o’clock that evening at our condo. We weren’t quite as excited as we were seeing it on the internet. It was okay but not as nice as the pictures were. The twin size beds were a little lumpy. It had a balcony that over looked the Gulf of Mexico. The beach was not far away, but we didn’t see any people on the beach, perhaps because it was seven o’clock in the evening.

We noticed two good looking guys at the pool when we were bringing our stuff in; they watched us, laughed, and waived. We got all our stuff upstairs, carrying that much stuff up three flights of stairs wasn’t as easy as we expected. I was definitely out of shape. We unpacked and made a grocery list for fresh fruit, vegetables and meats.

There was a list on the table for us to check over the condition of the condo. We had to mark if anything seemed damaged then return it to the condo manager. We put all our groceries in the cabinets and we thought we would be fine food wise.

We decided to look around the area to see what was around and how far stores were. We checked liquor stores first, Ronnie, Kat and I had fake ID’s so we could get liquor. We were driving through town looking around, when we saw a pizza parlor, and decided we would have pizza tonight and buy groceries the next day, giving us more time to plan meals later. We all ordered what we wanted, and Abby was still standing at the counter. She walked to our table smiling.

    Guess what?

I looked at her, What Abby?

I have a job, I start on Friday.

We were amazed, quiet, shy Abby had a job when we had been in town less than three hours.

That is great Abby, do they need anyone else? Kat asked.

By the way, they do. They are looking for one more. Hurry and the job may be yours Kat ran to the counter, filled out the application, and came back with a smile. I got it"

Ronnie said, I am happy for you two. Now Sam and I need to find one, and we will be set.

This was a great pizza parlor. This pizza had awesome crust and you could buy it by the slice. It was the best pizza I had ever ate. We went back to the condominium to sleep because we were exhausted. It felt good to be here, we were happy and excited for what lay ahead of us.

We agreed that there would be no stupid stunts. We hoped to meet boys, but if we decided to sleep with them and brought them to our place we all had to agree it was okay. We figured with the two bedrooms it wouldn’t be a problem unless we brought two guys in at once. I was still a virgin, so was Abby. Ronnie, and Kat were both on the pill and had been sexually active for some time, but Abby and I held out. We wanted the right one and the right reason to have sex, and Abby, preferred marriage. For me it would happen when it happened.

We slept in the first morning. We put on our swimsuits, grabbed our towels, and headed for the beach. No one was on our beach, not a single soul. Why not? I wondered. We saw a couple in the pool area with a small child and decided to ask them.

Hello, we just arrived last night. We were wondering why no one is on the beach. Kat was the brave one.

The gentleman laughed, Yeah, we have been here two days and no one has gone to that beach. If you want to swim in the ocean, I suggest you go further up north to where the hotels are. It is just a mile or so up the beach. The beach here drops off quickly, and the undertow is awful. It isn’t as it showed in the brochures.

Wow, we have found a few things that were misrepresented from the web site. Ronnie said.

Yeah, we did too. Fortunately, we are only staying two more days. The pool is nice and the hot tub does work. Good luck, ladies. He nodded at us and we began to walk away.

We all looked at each other. Now what do we do? We prepaid for three months. We were stuck with it. So what if we had to drive a bit, as long as we had a place to eat and sleep we could handle driving to a nice safe beach. We did place a letter of complaint in the manager’s box. We wrote him, we would be sending one to the National Tourism Guide as well.

We all jumped into the car and drove north. We found a dead end street on the beach with parking. We had to pay for parking but we would be on a nice beach where we saw many people seeming to have fun, and we wanted to have fun. We walked out to the shore and the sand was so soft beneath our feet. It wasn’t hot as I had expected; it was rather nice. We laid out our towels and refreshments and headed toward the water. The water felt great. It was comfortable.

We played and splashed each other; we ran and pushed each other under the water. You could see the bottom pretty far out. We had a blast. We got out for a while, drank some sodas and ate some snacks. Then we buried each other in the sand. Abby made a mermaid out of Kat.

We took lots of pictures. It was so cute. We had Ronnie’s lap top and mine, so we could send pictures to our families. We lay in the sun, turning from side to side. We had on our protective sun-block, but we played in the water so often that it didn’t stay on. We spent all afternoon playing in the water getting burned but having a great time.

We headed back to the car with all our stuff in tow wasted from exhausted from playing in the water and the summer sun. When we hit the pavement bare-foot it was like walking on coals. It was flat hot. We jumped back in the sand, and put our shoes on, got in the car and headed back to the condo.

We saw a few signs in storefronts for ‘Help Wanted’. We made some notes for Ronnie and me to come back and apply. We stopped at a quick stop and got a local paper. We looked for entertainment and possible employment.

Ronnie and I went over the paper and marked several positions we might like. Most of the jobs were part-time, which was good, as we didn’t want anything to keep us away from having fun over the summer. We just wanted some extra spending money or emergency money.

We spent some time at the pool that evening, talking to some of the residents about places to go and see. There were a couple of nice guys that gave us information. They were staying here for the summer also, but they had already been here for three weeks; they were older guys, on summer break from college in Virginia.

We met a young couple from Texas, It was so funny to listen to them talk. They were friendly and told us everything they had done on their vacation. Most people stay here by the week, they told us, so we would be meeting many new people all summer.

We made our plans for the next day. We were going to drop Abby and Kat off where we were yesterday at the beach, and Ronnie and I were going looking for jobs. We had cell phones so if they wanted to leave they could call or text us. We hit probably twenty places for jobs. Ronnie even checked one at the Humane Society, which was her most desired place. I kind of liked it too, but didn’t have the experience she had with animals.

One of the businesses was a law firm. They offered the job right away to Ronnie, but she turned it down. She only came in for my benefit. They then offered me the job, and I accepted it. I would have to dress office casual, I didn’t bring many dress clothes with me, but Ronnie had some for me to wear. I would work three days a week, four to six hours a day. I would work Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from nine o’clock to one o’clock or later if need be.

It sounded easy and a new experience for me. I would be filling, running errands, doing some Internet research, etc. It seemed right up my alley. They offered $10.0 an hour, which was great. I thought I shouldn’t tell Abby and Kat how much I would be making. Ronnie didn’t care if she made anything; she didn’t need the money only something to do with her time.

We found a place that rented scooters. We rented two of them for the summer. Abby and Kat worked usually the same hours so they rode together. I could use the other one to go to work. If we all wanted one to ride around on we could rent them by the day or week later. We thought we were set.

    CHAPTER TWO

We were having a great time in Florida. The guys in our condo unit, Steve and Trent, were so much fun. They took us to a party and introduced us to their friends. We were hanging with college kids and being treated just like them. We were given drinks, guys were talking to us, and girls were pleasant completely, unlike high school girls.

One guy, Mick really liked Ronnie. He followed her everywhere she went. I didn’t know if she was playing hard to get or wasn’t sure about him yet. I watched and laughed.

Abby stayed close to me. She was uneasy at this party. Kat was off with a boy she had met; she was already laughing, dancing and drinking with him. I saw Ronnie finally in a serious conversation with Mick and knew then she liked him.

A couple of young men came over to Abby and me, asking how long we were here, what we did, and so on and so on. Only one of them was doing the talking, the other one was restless and kind of a jerk. He kept looking over his shoulder all the time. I told them we would be starting college in the fall, and we were here for three months, the four of us.

One was cute the other guy was standoffish, he had a hard face, and he was tall, broad shoulders, and looked kind of mean. He had a shadow of a beard, dark complexion, and he had deep, dark eyes. I kept looking at him, and when he looked at me his eyes where shinny and scary but then he would look away, he wanted to leave. It seemed as if he didn’t want to be seen with us, so I started acting disinterested in them, they finally left.

I noticed Abby was not having a good time. I told Ronnie and Kat we were leaving, but they both wanted to stay. We walked toward our condo; thank goodness, we didn’t have to walk too far. The temperature was nice and cool, the sky was full of stars, and the moon was bright, so we had lots of light.

We were walking on the beach when we heard a car, which sounded out of place on the beach. I turned around, and it was a dune buggy, with two guys in it. When they got close, I recognized them from the party. It was the cute boy and his freaky friend.

They stopped beside us, asking why we left the party and where we lived. I told them Abby and I just lived up the beach and didn’t need a ride. I couldn’t remember their names, the freaky guy told his friend to move on, I laughed. The cute guy got out of the dune buggy and asked us to sit and have a drink with them. We were leery and scared of them, because no one else was around.

We looked at each other then nodded. The cut guy introduced himself as Sam. He sat next to Abby. Abby started laughing at things Sam was saying. Sam moved closer to her. They seemed to like the same things, reading, tennis, and they both sang. They sat on the sand facing each other.

The freaky guy finally got out of the dune buggy and stood beside me. Freaky guy was what I called him in my mind because I still hadn’t heard his name mentioned. So I didn’t know what to call him. I was afraid of him but I knew I had to be cool and not let them see my fear. He was nice looking, but I didn’t know what to say.

I crossed my arms across my chest. So, I said my voice cracking some, Hey man, are you here for the summer?

He said with a smirk on his face, Yeah sort of, I go in college, but I was born and raised in Florida, in Ft Lauderdale Area. My parents lived there. Well my Dad does now.

Cool, why here then instead of there? I inquired.

I am here to get away from my Dad. He said quickly.

Yeah, that is what we are doing too. I laughed.

I continued, Where do you go to school?

I go to Harvard Law School. He was only answering what I asked, not adding anything. He seemed disinterested and anxious.
