The Last Wolf - Leilah Nichols
Chapter 1
The Disaster
A long time ago when the earth ended in the Dinosaur Age, many animals died, but most insects lived. But there were two different kinds of wolf pups that survived. The pups never saw or met each other. They ate bugs for food.
One day, they both grew up and found each other and had four pups.
My sister Frost saw our dead brother, then saw her sister alive but dying. All of a sudden, she heard a squeal of a pup in front of Mom. She looked, and the pup, her sister Athena, was alive.
I am Athena, and my sister Frost and I were the two pups that survived. Our mother and father taught us how to hunt bugs. When we were born, there were new animals like deer and more. Right now, it is spring. Near the place where I was born is a waterfall—a beautiful waterfall! I always drink there.
Mom, I’m hungry. Can I go outside with Frost to hunt bugs?
said Athena.
Sure!
said Mom.
Athena and Frost were rare, mixed kinds of wolves. They were big, fast, and strong. They hunted three bugs and played. They returned home.
Honey, your dad and I will leave for two days for a big hunt!
said their mother. Their mother and father didn’t know how to hunt. They left.
Ahh, alone at last!
said Frost.
Yep!
said Athena.
Two days later.
Where’s Mom and Dad?
said Athena, all shaken up.
Hey, don’t worry! They should be coming today!
said Frost.
Okay,
said Athena sadly. She cried by howling. She heard a weak faint howl calling back in the distance.
Mom? Dad? Come on, Frost! Let’s see if they are okay!
They ran to where they heard the howl.
OH MY! Mom!
She died of starving, and I don’t know how to hunt!
said their father, crying.
They all started to cry.
Mom, please!
Athena and Frost cried.
I smell a human,
said Athena, lowering her head.
Me too,
said Frost, peeling her lips back.
All heard a gun cock. Bang!
DAD!
said Frost.
Gun cocked.
RUN!
said Athena.
Bang! Bang! Missed.
They got away, and the human took Mom’s and Dad’s bodies away.
Athena and Frost arrived home safely.
WHY? Just WHY? Our mom and our dad! How will we even hunt?
said Athena.
"I know, it’s hard … we now have to move on and be strong, very strong. We are the last kind of rare wolves ever, and we can’t die. That man will be rich with our parents’ bodies, but we must live and survive!" said Frost.
So hunt deer?
said Athena.
Yes, we shall try and shall not die!
said Frost.
Yes, that’s right! Tonight we’ll eat deer!
said Athena.
They slept until night.
Chapter 2
Faded
It was night.
Yawn. Time to go!
said Frost.
They went.
Hey, look. It’s a deer!
said Athena.
Yeah, let’s get it!
said Frost.
She ran to the deer with Athena following behind.
The deer ran and grunted, then—bam! It kicked Frost. She blacked
