I t was a pleasant summer night. Aabha was sitting out on the porch of her rented single room home. She sat watching the stars, reminiscing her past, as the cool breeze played with her hair. A look towards the sky to enliven the tedious hours was Aabha’s recourse each time she felt unnerved by her worries. Every night she would wait for a shooting star so that she could make a wish - A wish to be united with the love of her life. She was mulling things over, trying to find relief from the many puzzles that engulfed her existence. She was a devout wife and yet was striving for some affection from her husband. Rajan, her husband, claimed love for her, but never barricaded her from the road to truth! Beneath the cold glare of the desolate night, Aabha journeyed back in time to comprehend what really transpired in the past. Each day she fought despondency and tribulation only to accede to it as a bend on the lofty ends of her destiny. She was being carried onwards by the slow-footed time towards a solemn consequence of fate.

It was the third day of college but the influx of students was still at its peak. This would continue to happen for another month until regular classes began. Aabha was a radiant looking girl with a beautiful glamour of youth on her side. She was still getting acclimatized to this new life. Acquaintance to the strangers around her was almost nil. She spotted a tall handsome boy vibrant with a surge of passion, enter her class. His arrival created a ripple, that which flutters hearts for a moment! He was awe-inspiring. Every girl in class was thrilled but abashed as if he meant something to each one exclusively. He had the allure of a handsome hulk and was quickly the subject of discussion among all the ladies of course in hushed undertones!

He did not belong to this city, hardly knew any English and the Hindi he knew was Bhojpuri – a dialect tough to understand. Since he was an immigrant and almost an alien amongst the locals, Aabha soon felt compelled to lend him a helping hand. And even though he was dapper and suave, Aabha wasn’t affected by his seemingly overbearing profile! Only tenderness breathed from her due some strange concern for him and hence she would help him whenever she could.

As time passed, the activities and projects within the class intensified and the whole class had to be divided into various groups. There was a lack of girls in class as a result of which each group had just one girl amongst three or four boys. Aabha and Rajan were in the same group. The other two boys in her group were Saurav and Arya. Life at this time seemed to swim in a sort of blurred mist before Aabha’s eyes!

Saurav was Aabha’s friend’s brother – a tall, fair and sensible fellow. Arya on the other hand was dark complexioned of high stature and an intelligent boy and Aabha’s school mate. Rajan was every girl’s favourite as he was the most alluring guy in class. But for Aabha, he was a puzzle – most unpredictable!

Aabha, Saurav and Arya became bosom buddies. The added advantage was that they all belonged to the same state and spoke the same language. They were all experiencing the sensuous enjoyment of the outward show of life. Aabha hadn’t become friends with Rajan yet. To him, she related in precisely the right terms. They weren’t even introduced to each other properly and hence just acquaintances. Rajan one day wanted to take it a tad forward! He carefully approached Aabha:

Hi, I am Rajan from Patna. said Rajan, setting all sane traditions at defiance.

Hello Rajan. I am Aabha. I belong here. Responded Aabha as she curled her fastidiously done up lips. She also wanted to play along Rajan’s boldness as she cherished no petty resentments!

Rajan felt encouraged, We have been living in Patna since years as my father is employed there."

‘So, do you like it here?

Nah, not really! I am not used to the kind of food that is served here. I hardly eat!

Oh yes, I understand. So, how do you manage then? Is there anything I can do for you?"

Thank you for asking. Well, I do the cooking myself. But I might soon need a maid as I need to concentrate on my education." Rajan continued, as he seized on the conversation greedily.

Wow, can you cook? That’s so amazing! Oh, I guess it’s time for class. We better go! said Aabha with a seriousness that lurked in the depths of her beautiful eyes!

Hey Aabha! Can we be Friends? said Rajan with a playful and a charming expression.

‘Sure." Aabha was surely enjoying the admiration she was being showered upon with.

And so began the story of Aabha and Rajan.

It was time for their power electronics class and off they went! Reflecting on the solemn and unfathomable years, Aabha let out a sigh of disdain. She had no idea what destiny had in store for her!

    A abha! Aabha! hollered Rajan.

Aabha jerked out of her thoughts as Rajan impatiently called out her name.

Aabha, when are you going to serve me my dinner? I am starving. yelped Rajan. These days almost all the time, Rajan was varnished over with a cold repellent cynicism.

Oh I am sorry Rajan, dinner will be served in five minutes. said Aabha. She had turned urbanely plastic and versatile in a bid to gratify Rajan.

Five minutes! Don’t you know how hungry I get by this time? You should have kept my dinner ready. All you do is day dream!

Aabha could not utter a single word. Bitterness crept into her face. She had gotten used to being treated like this. He was turning out to be a callous and conscienceless brute. No matter what she did, it was never enough! And so, just as a dutiful wife should be, Aabha set about making dinner for her husband.

"Please come to the dining table, dinner is served.

So, what have you made today? I hope you haven’t made roti, daal and veg. again today?

Well, since it isn’t a special occasion, I did make regular food.

You are a good for nothing! My mother used to make all kinds of dishes. There was never a dull moment with her. And look at you; totally useless!

Rajan, you very well know I cannot cook as you like. But I am trying.

Is this the way you try? I warn you; you better learn things around here soon enough!

Ok, I promise I will try harder. So, how was your day today?

My day was as bad as a rotten fish. For this meager earning I slog all day. And all you do is sit at home and yawn.

Please don’t worry Rajan. I am trying to bring home an earning
