About this ebook

The book is about the physical and emotional stress that a person with ALS undergoes. The medium is primarily in poetry, although short essays are included. And it is in the first person, by an MD. The poems express my trials and tribulations with my muscles and devices. The book is for those afflicted with ALS, their primary caregivers, and families. It has humor, pathos, and information. Also, it has excerpts from three previous books I have written.

    Introduction

This will surely be my last book (no cheers or jeers from the peanut gallery). The title of this book was going to be Last Writes, but I still have the hope that they may find a cure for this affliction. Be that as it may, I have many thoughts about ALS which may enlighten others with this progressive, strange and deadly disease.

I would like the reader to think about the title and cover as a 3- pronged continuum of my ALS and the planet’s and civilization’s predicament.

All three are facing extinction as we know them. The progression of my disease, global warming, the Rome clock, the spread of new tropical diseases (e.g. Ebola), the continued and progressive threat of nuclear war (and nuclear winter), the continued intolerance of people regarding religion, ethnicity and color of skin; all these point to a time of instability and a time for inspiration. We must become of one mind, one direction and one hope for the sake of the planet and ourselves. We must come together and love one another to heal the wounds of war and consolidate our humanity.

Many of these poems have been previously published and noted as such. Many are new. They reflect the insidious and relentless progression of ALS. They also reflect the use and value of medicine and devices that are used to treat ALS.

On a personal note, I have three children, all adults, but separated by ages, involuntarily. I also have one son-in-law, two brothers and one indispensable (technically unrelated)
