Hidden Within the Midst of Darkness - Brooke Hales

    PROLOGUE

K AREN WALKED INTO the room. Are you still trying to solve that case, Agent Lang?

Because of somebody we didn’t expect, she is dead. I can’t understand how we missed it.

We were brought in too late, Michael, so stop playing the blame game, said Darrin.

An announcement was made. Karen, line one.

Turning around, she responded, Thanks, Darrin. Michael, just put it to rest. There is no need to keep going over the evidence. There’s nothing else that we can do.

This is Agent Heart. Yes …

    She walked away.

Michael stared at the files on his desk. He then picked them up and placed them back into the box, along with the other evidence. He closed the lid and then picked the box up and headed toward the evidence locker. Michael placed the box on a shelf, closed the door, and walked away.

    Hey, Michael, you leaving?

Yeah, I am. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Michael waved as he headed out of the door.

    CHAPTER ONE

R AIN POURED INTO the night. Katy turned down the street and continued to run. Despite the coldness of the rain, she kept going. She picked up her pace as she came near her house. She opened the door and went in.

Look at you. You’re all wet.

Yeah, that’s what happens when you run in the rain. What are you doing? Working?

    Yeah, I am.

    Great.

    Just be nice, Kathrine.

    Sure thing, Amber.

    Katy …

    All right.

Katy ran upstairs to her room. She grabbed a towel and a change of clothes, walked into the bathroom, and closed the door.

After her shower, she walked back toward her room. She looked down the stairs and saw the lights were off. She went into her room and closed the door behind her. Katy turned and saw a black rose laying on top of her bed. She picked up the flower and studied it, and then she walked over and tossed it into the trash.

The wind began to pick up. Tree branches scratched at the window as if trying to get in. The pitter-patter began once more as the rain splashed against the window, one drop at a time. A flash of light filled the darkness of the room. Something brushed against Katy’s face. She jerked awake and looked around. She saw a dark shadow run out of her room. Katy got out of bed and followed it. She ran down the stairs, but the figure was gone.

    Katy?

I’m sorry, Dad. Just go back to sleep.

    What time is it?

    It’s three in the morning.

Katy made her way back to her room. A clash of thunder shook the house, making Katy jump. She walked back into her room and turned on the light. There on her bed was the black rose, the one she had thrown away earlier. She picked it up, stormed toward her mom’s office, and opened the door. Her mom was typing on the computer. Katy tossed the rose at her mom. Her mother jumped and turned around.

What the hell, Katy? That isn’t funny. What was that for?

I threw this away earlier, and when I came back up to my room, it was back on my bed. Do you let your troublesome whatever-you-call-them roam around the house? Simply let them do whatever the hell they want?

    No, Kathrine, I don’t.

Then all I ask is for you to keep them away from me and my stuff. But of course you never listen. Just keep them away.

    CHAPTER TWO

K ATY WALKED DOWN the street with Cassidy.

You seem upset today. What’s going on, Katy?

I keep finding this rose on my bed, and it’s not cute.

What color is it? asked Cassidy, curious.

    Black.

    Creepy!

"Then I swear that someone was in my room
