We all have a past—some not so great and some not half bad—but one thing to remember: we all have futures.

Chapter 1
I was enjoying the cool breeze from the window to my left. I turned right, and he turned away! I knew he always looked at me, but he never agreed! I turned towards the board, and could see my chemistry teacher making some jokes which were not funny, but we never had any other option. We had to laugh! Slowly I began to think about things which were not related to chemistry. Pradeep and I were together since last year. We were very caring to each other. I could say we were more than friends, but not committed! He was a typical geek student, but he was very attractive, a bit taller than me and a bit darker than me. He had curly hair. I guess he didn’t remember when he last combed his hair! He always found the world’s most boring stuff the most interesting ones! I guess I was one of them!
‘Smritha, write down!’ Poo whispered as my mind seemed far off, in another world. Her name was Pooja Krishnamurthy. I called her Poo. She was one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen (but not as beautiful as me). Seriously speaking, the only girl whom I trusted from my childhood was Poo. She was very caring. Her skin was as fair as snow, and her lips were as red as blood (with the help of lipstick of course!) Her hair was fine and silky. I loved playing with her hair. The strangest thing about my Poo was that she never spoke to boys! In fact, she never spoke unnecessarily with anyone from my childhood. We studied in the same school together, and hence, we were very close to each other.
She pinched my thigh and signalled me to write down. I started writing down some notes. I hated this subject. ‘Something plus something equals something’ was what she was teaching! But for me, every chemical equation sounded like ‘Smritha plus Pradeep equals love!’
We were all in Class 12. It was called two-year pre-university course in this region. And it was very difficult as the subjects were really dry and not at all applicable to me. We had to attend special coaching classes in early mornings and late evenings along with the regular classes in college. Teacher suddenly raised her voice, ‘Class, this is an important turning point of your life! Concentrate.’
I remember hearing this sentence almost every day at least five to six times for the past one month.
For people like me, this sounded like hell. My passion was always music. But due to pressure, I landed up studying here. In fact, the only person who turned my pressure into pleasure was Pradeep.
This time I seriously started writing down some notes, but then I realized that someone was passing by the window. It was Amar. Amar Bharadwaj was his full name. He always stared at me with lustful eyes. He never tried to look away when I stared back. In fact, he looked further inside my eyes. He was a well-built man with great physic and superb fashion sense. He was handsome, with good body language, but looked wild! He was tall and dark and would always have a lustful smile on his face.
Actually, I enjoyed the way he stared at me. He was the one to have ever stimulated the feminine hormones in my brain. But sometimes I hated him. His eyes did not always stare at my eyes! That was the reason I felt uncomfortable with him. I had never noticed Pradeep staring at any other part of my body except my face. That was a pure gentleman. That was why I loved him. But who knows? It is always difficult to judge boys!
The vibration of my mobile woke me up from my thoughts. I always hid my mobile in my salwar’s dupatta! I saw the message. It was Pradeep. ‘Thinking about me?’ It had lots of smileys at the end.
‘Who else do I have to think about?’ I replied with a blushing emoticon.
I turned at him, and we both exchanged smiles and started to look at our teacher. Poo wrote something on my notes, stared at me once, and continued with her notes. She wrote, ‘Stop texting in class, idiot!’
But I continued with the chat, as usual!
‘Coffee after class?’ Pradeep expected a positive reply.
‘Only if it’s your treat!’ I replied with a smiley.
‘Smritha, your salwar is superb! But don’t you think that it’s too deep at the back cut?’ I loved the way he was being possessive of me! Remember, I had told once that it’s always difficult to judge boys. No one can say where they are staring at!
Yeah, it’s called tie-up long cut! How is it? Isn’t it hot?’ I purposefully texted like this to irritate him.
‘Hot? Never! You’ll catch a cold. Cover your back with dupatta!’ That’s a superb way of texting not to show skin. That’s my geek Pradeep! I replied with loads of smiles, ‘See you after class, come near the library.’
‘Yes, my goddess!’ was the immediate reply.
‘Want something to eat? I have brought pulav for you!’
‘You made it on your own?’
‘Come on, you know that I don’t know anything about cooking, right?’
‘Thank god, I am safe! Bring it near library after class.’
‘Hate you.’
‘Sorry, goddess! I was joking dear. Won’t you forgive your Pradeep?’
I replied with smileys.
The bell rang, and for the next few hours, the class would be handled by the living Hitler. So I didn’t even dare to touch my mobile. I met Pradeep at the library after class during lunch break and then promised for coffee in the evening. Poo was with me as usual. In fact, I always took Poo with me whenever I talked with him so that the open secret remained a secret! No one would suspect that Pradeep and I have a special relationship if Poo was with us.
It was lab session in the afternoon, and luckily, my batch was free. Both Pradeep and Poo were struggling with the microscope to see the non-existent vital parts of bacteria, and I was alone sitting near the basketball court, watching Amar playing the game. Seriously speaking, boys looked really hot in sports attire. He had superb biceps and triceps. The sweat was enhancing his contours and shape. He always tried to play a single game so that I would get impressed. I couldn’t understand why boys tried to impress me so much; after all, my life was only for Pradeep.
I made it sure that Pradeep didn’t notice my attraction towards Amar. Riding my Pleasure, I reached the cafe, which was a bit near to the college. Pleasure was my scooter. It was pink. It was as cute as me. My name was written on the headlight of my Pleasure. In fact, I was emotionally attached to it because it was my mom’s last gift to me.
I noticed an autorickshaw stopping outside the cafe, and I could see through the glass that both Poo and Pradeep were in there, sitting at the extreme end points of the seat, maintaining huge gap at the centre! They both got down and came in.
‘Are you guys bunking today’s classes also?’ Poo said looking into my eyes.
‘I need not say yes to make you understand.’ I smiled.
I could see that the annoyance on Poo’s face was melting upon seeing my smile. She gave me a big hug, and then left us.
Chapter 2
Poo’s house, 7 p.m.
I was sleeping over at Poo’s house that night. We were supposed to study together, but when we both sat together, we did everything other than studies! I looked at my Pinku; it was almost seven. Pinku was my new pink Fastrack watch. I loved it a lot as it perfectly suited my personality. We both went inside Poo’s room. I made myself comfortable on the bed. She sat on the study chair.
‘Don’t you think that you are spoiling your life?’ she whispered.
I gave a flat smile. I always thought Pradeep was my future. It wouldn’t be spoiled.
‘Please, Smritha, why can’t you understand? You are not concentrating in class, and you are bunking school in the evening. Are you sure about what you are doing?’ She said with a firm voice.
‘Have you ever loved anyone?’ I said, lying down on her bed.
‘What sort of question is that? You know very well that I never loved anyone,’ she annoyed.
‘Then you won’t understand my situation Poo,’ I said, watching the ceiling fan, which was rotating slowly.
‘You are mad.’ She made a disgusting face.
A drop of tear rolled down from my eyes to the pillow. I was still looking up. She came to me and wiped it and kissed my forehead.
‘Remembering your mom, Smritha?’ she said with a soft voice.
‘Poo, it’s you and Pradeep who are making me forget my pains. Why can’t you understand? I need him in my life.’ I kept my words as soft as possible.
‘Is your dad normal?’ She tried to change the topic.
‘He is born abnormal! You can’t expect him to be normal.’ I was still looking at the fan.
Silence reigned for two minutes. She wanted me to smile, but I didn’t want to fake a smile even with Poo. She started studying physics aloud. The intention was to make something to go inside my brain, but I was not hearing much of her physics as I was in my own world.
‘Poo, why are we studying?’
‘To score well! To get good job and settle
