    CHAPTER ONE

A t night the town of Crown Point becomes a little mysterious. It always happens close around the time of eight o clock or nine o clock pm. Everyone is inside before a certain time.

Where are the teenagers? With today being today, most of them need to be inside the house anyway. Any parent with a troubled teen would be glad to move here. The crime rate is less at about 40 percent and the police is doing a fine job keeping the peace. On the residential streets some are very dark, with probably one street light, and when the trees blocks the lights the residential blocks become even darker. This town has many beautiful artistic frames houses. Some of them were built in the early 1900s. They sold well because a lot of couples who have retired, have purchased the homes only to make them over and sell them or keep them and make them into museums or bed in breakfast inns. The town of Crown Point has really earned its name, it seems to be a city that stands as an escape from the everyday rat race of a busy city.

    *     *     *

It’s about 5:45am and most of the town has awakened after only seeming to have slept for a few hours. Parents and kids are getting up out of bed, in and out of the showers and already at the breakfast table. The morning can move so fast and smoothly until you can already hear the school buses and cars on the streets. A lot of people who live in Crown Point work in nearby busy cities. There are a few lawyers and doctors and a bunch of teachers that reside here. The three gas stations in town are open and receiving customers. The sun is slowly coming up and there is much to do today. Parents and single parents are on their way to work. There are some housewives in Crown Point already making preparations for dinner for the upcoming evening. Kids are at school hopefully making the grade. The police force of Crown Point have their duties today. So Crown Point is at its most busiest time of the day. On Lockwood street in Crown Point there is a blood stain red and white two story frame house. There is a 2001 red lexus in the driveway. At this house in Crown Point lives three bothers Charles, Omar, and Dylan. Introducing! The Goodson boys. All three have been living in the same house together for ten years. The young men were raised in this house and did not want it to vacate the family. The house was passed on to the boys when their parents moved to the west coast.

Charles… the oldest brother is sitting in the kitchen having coffee, toast and scrambled eggs.

Omar in between the eldest and the youngest is sitting across from his oldest brother having breakfast. Dylan the youngest is out of bed and doing his jumping jacks.

Dylan come eat! Omar shouted out knowing his younger brother is awake.

Charles did not have much to say this morning. He just wanted to leave and get to work, just before Dylan walked into the kitchen, charles ate the last piece of toast and got up from the chair and walked out the house. Wow didn’t he drive off like speed racer.

Omar noticed how rude their older brother was this morning and overlooked it. Dylan ate his breakfast but he could not help staring at omar about the coldness from charles. "How did you sleep? Omar asked.

Okay I guess, I had a lot sleepless nights before. I guess I better appreciate the sleep I am getting. Dylan responded.

"Do you know if mom or dad called this past weekend? Dylan asked.

I don’t think so and charles never said anything. Omar Responded.

Charles probably talked to them and plans to tell us when he gets ready. Dylan remarked.

Do you have something to do today? I feeling like you are occupied with something. Omar said.

Ive been thinking about going to California. Dylan said.

    "What! Why? Omar interjected.

Charles does not want me here. Did you see what he did? If I did that to him I would not hear the end of it. Dylan said.

Don’t pay him any attention. He has nerve issues. Omar said.

Dylan became very furious with omar’s response. Dylan feels like that omar is not serious about the problem charles has with him.

You said California was to hot for you. Omar asked.

Never mind omar! Dylan said about to storm out the kitchen.

What’s Wrong? What did I do? Omar asked.

YOU ARE DOING IT AGAIN! Dylan said storming back to his room.

At once Dylan stormed out of the kitchen and back into his bedroom and crashed across the bed. There has been a long term feud between dylan and charles. Chances of a truce doesn’t seem possible. Dylan still wonders how long is charles going to treat him like a piece of furniture. There has not been much conversation amongst the two. Just cold stares and brief bitter statements from charles. While dylan was lying on his bed side ways, omar walked in with a concerned look on his face. Dylan knows what his brother was thinking, but no words even came out of his mouth. Omar wanted to talk about charles, but something was holding him back. Dylan sort of waited on edge to see if omar was going to finally talk or at least say everything is going to be alright. Instead omar did an about face to go answer the phone that just suddenly started ringing. Saved By The Bell! Dylan thought. Now we don’t have to talk about charles.

    RADNER AND SOSNOWSKI ACCOUNTING FIRM

    2:04PM

Charles sat in his office after a client just left. He must have saw 20 people that day. Charles Goodson has an excellent reputation in Crown Point as a very skilled and task oriented accountant. He has over 50 clients and loves his job. Charles has prepared tax forms for very professional people. Charles has attended many functions that his clients have invited him to like banquets, fashion shows, art shows, functions of all kinds and charles has gotten to know a lot of important and wealthy people. He met Lena at a fashion show she was modeling in. He instantly fell in love with her and dated her for several months. Charles proposed to her five months ago and lena declined. Since then charles has had this chip on his shoulder. Charles is a very bitter man outside his profession. For some strange reason he takes it out on the person closest to him and that’s dylan. Mr. Radner walked into charles office with a big smile on his face. It was a look of a very impressed and satisfied man.

Mr. Goodson you are doing a very fine job, keep up the good work, Mr Radner said.

Thanks Mr. Radner I am always glad to know that you are pleased with my work. Charles said as he stood up and shook Mr. Radners hand. When Mr. Radner exited from the office charles returned back to that gloom and doom mind. Charles is very stressed and he don’t even know why. Maybe its time for a vacation Charles thought "No I just spent money on new gutters for the house. Then he thought maybe he needs to get to the root of the problem. Dylan has to go he has been freeloading off of me too long and its time for him to experience life and support himself. Charles has been wanting to talk to dylan about this for a long time but he was always too busy to talk to dylan. So the time is today that he says he will talk to dylan.

    THE GOODSON HOME

    4:45PM

Omar had quite a menu today. Omar loved to cook, he is more of the homemaker. Omar keeps the house filled with a nice aroma. The wooden floors are always polished. He will get rid of a lot of dust, he even goes outside cut the grass and hedges. Charles pays him well to take care of the house. Omar must have been in a very good mood because he made sirloin steak with mashed potatoes, green beans served with dinner rolls. Charles entered into the house and went straight to the bathroom. Omar said to himself I guess its gonna be one of those days. Charles walked into the kitchen fixed his plate and sat on the couch.

Charles please be careful gravy stains don’t come out well at all Omar said.

"Oh I will move over to the table. Where is dylan? Charles asked.

I don’t know, but speaking of dylan, why were you so rude to him this morning? Omar asked.

I cant afford to keep taking care of him, I’m tired of walking in here and he is doing nothing. Charles said.

Charles you need to be patient with dylan You know he’s not well. Omar said.

See omar that is the problem right there people are always spoiling him because he has health issues. The last problem that he had was a bad heart he was very young. Charles said.

"Charles are you wanting put our brother out on the street? Mom and dad will kill you. Omar said.

Well he needs to do something omar. Charles said.

Charles you have not been talking like this before what brought this on? Is it lena? Omar asked.

    What! Charles yelled.

"Ever since she turned you down when you asked her to marry you, you have been so difficult. Omar said,

    That’s not true. Charles said.

"Yes it is. You really loved her didn’t you? That was the only girl that kept you smiling,

I have never seen you smile the way you did when you and she were dating, but you can’t take it out on dylan." Omar said.

If I need a counselor I will seek a professional. Charles sarcastically said.

You do need a professional because I don’t think there a person skilled enough in this family that can help you charles. Dylan stays here that is our brother if he goes then I am going with him. Omar said with conviction.

You can’t be serious. Charles said looking worried.

"What’s wrong? Scared of being alone in this house at night? Omar asked.

I am paying you to take care of this house. Charles said becoming furious.

Don’t you throw your money in my face brother! I can get another job somewhere else and dylan and I will have to make it the best way we can, at least we will be away from you, your selfish ways, and your house. Omar said as he took charles finished plate and placed it in the sink.

"I just want dylan to have some responsibility around here. Charles said.

I understand that, but I don’t like the way you want to bring this to him. Dylan has not been well since the accident and you know this charles. Dylan is always helping me around here when you are at work. I tell him to take a break because he is out of breath sometimes from helping me. Omar said.

    Well I don’t know I Just-

Charles you need to take it easy more than dylan does. Go seek some short-term help and I will guarantee you will feel better about your self. Omar said.

During this conversation dylan entered with a very unusual facial expression on his face. The two look slightly worried wondering how much did dylan hear or if he heard anything at all. Both omar and charles were not sure what to say, but the expression dylan had on his face told something to both of them.

"Dylan! We did not hear you come in. Where were you? It almost time for supper. Omar said a little nervous.

I was at a church social I really enjoyed myself omar. Dylan said.

    Hi charles Dylan greeted

Hi Dylan sorry about my behavior this morning. Charles said apologetically.

Its really okay Im use to it. Dylan said as omar sighed.

Let all sit down and eat. Omar suggested trying to help to ease the tension.

I ate already. Dylan said about to exit the living room.

I made dessert our favorite sweet potato pie. Omar said.

    No thanks. Dylan said.

I made it for all us dylan. Omar said.

NO THANKS! Dylan interjected and exit.

Omar turned his head to his brother charles. Omar became so furious he stormed out of the living and went upstairs to his room leaving charles. Charles sat down on the sofa and held his head down with shame. He knows and omar knows that dylan overheard everything. This household is going to change now that the cat is out of the bag about charles wanting dylan to leave. It’s about 5:34PM. and charles suddenly turned his head and saw what must have been the last mail truck driving passing the house. The guilt that charles has now, is so overwhelming that charles decided to retire for the evening and get ready for the next day by picking out something to wear.

The time now is 2:43AM and dylan is in his room and has not been to sleep. Dylan is still thinking about what he overheard earlier, Dylan is slightly feeling some hatred toward his brother charles. Suddenly there is knock at the door when dylan said come in it was omar.

    Are you alright? Omar asked.

Yes Im doing alright for a person that is not wanted and don’t you try to sugarcoat anything omar I heard everything. Its not like I want to live in this museum anyway.

    Dylan said with fury.

This is not a museum dylan this is our home. Omar said defending the house.

Well according to charles, this is not my home. Dylan said.

Dylan this is your house too, you have as much right to be here as any one of us. Stop letting charles get to you. Mom and dad would definitely oppose of you leaving. Omar said.

I believe that, but this feud is so damn dramatic. I also heard you when you said if I have to leave then you are going with me. I don’t care how much respect you think charles deserves because he is making all this money. This should not be happening and if I leave just stay here omar, charles does not have anything against you. Dylan said.

I just want us all to get along with each other because eventually this is going to turn into a house without peace. Omar said.

"It already has omar! When I made that statement to you this morning, about you doing it again. What I meant was that you are always trying to pretend like that everything is alright and you know everything is not alright. You spend so much time making excuses for his actions because you don’t want to be out in the street. You can’t tell me that he don’t get under your skin with his manic depressive ways. Dylan expressed.

"Dylan I never said that he doesn’t get to me sometimes, but regardless of what you think and rather you like or not he is our brother I was telling him the same thing last night about you. Omar said.

You have a lot of mom in you omar I have always liked that about you. Charles is more like dad a jerk. Dylan said.

You should not say things like that about dad he always ask about you and wonders why you never answer the phone sometimes when he or when mom calls. Omar said.

Lets get off family classics, I know that charles and I will have to have a confrontation because I am tired of walking around here and pretending like you do. When it happens it happens there is no need for you to be a mediator. Dylan said while omar started scratching his head. Omar is very disappointed of how everything has turned out and wishes that charles would show some compassion, however omar wishes that dylan would just overlook charles. Omar walked out of dylan’s room on his way to his own room he stopped in front of charles room for a moment and continued on to his room and shut the door. Omar decided to put a smooth jazz CD at low volume. He needed
