Ralain had that feeling. One where she felt something was wrong. Normally, nothing occurred when this happened. It would be paranoia or a strange circumstance. Perhaps it would be like that this time as well.
She walked down the stairs quietly, casting glances both ways. Her father, Dorron, should have been home from his meeting with the king. On a usual day, he would be enjoying a good read of historical documents. He was dedicated to his work as councilman.
The spooked girl went from room to room, searching for her father or any intruder. Everything was quiet. Not a thing had been moved from its place. She searched the three closets on the first floor but there were no intruders.
Ralain let out a long sigh. She had been overly paranoid again. There was no cause for concern. She put her hands on her hips and laughed to herself. How silly she had been to think something dangerous was about to occur!
Ralain?
That was her father’s voice. It had come from the front door. The daughter quickly suppressed her laughter by pressing her hand to her mouth. She prayed her father had not noticed. Her grin was turned into a neutral expression by the time she met her father in the entryway.
He took off his elaborate jacket, placing it on the coatrack. He eyed Ralain. Is someone here?
No,
she said innocently. Part of her was nervous he said that because of her laughter. Another part of her thought he felt a strange presence too.
Dorron nodded, equally as innocent. That was when he became mischievous. Oh, I heard an elderly woman cackle so I thought you had some company. Thank goodness you didn’t bring anyone over.
