About this ebook

Stark

In the early morning
the beginning light
through the gaunt trees
without their leaves
stand proud and tall
in their nakedness,
soon to be clothed in white.

    Winter wear

My first poem, September 9, 2006

    Iowa winters were bitterly cold,

    we wore long-legged underwear

this was before ski pants or tights

    and girls wore dresses,

long stockings went over the underwear

held up by a garter belt,

a four inch band around the waist

    with four elastic straps

    two in front

    two in back

    clasps on the ends

    to attach to the stockings,

    wash day was on Monday

    clothing changed weekly,

first day wearing our clean underwear

    our legs were smooth

    second day the underwear

    began to stretch

    remedied by a slight fold

in the back of the ankle

each day the fold got bigger

by the last day we looked deformed,

    spring came with warm weather

    and no long underwear

    when Mom gave the word,

    until then

out of sight we rolled down the stockings

    up the underwear

    a bulge at the ankle

    one over the knee

    with garter belt straps flapping

    our legs free and cool,

    back in sight

    we reversed the procedure

    our daily mantra

    please God—warmer weather.
