Is Said was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, a section called Pittsburg, south west section of the city. He attended Crogram Elementary School, and later to Washington High School. He’s from a family of 10 Children, Lyons George Jr., Betty, Harold, Robert, James, Franklin Sandee, Peggye, and Jonny Lyons. They are the children of George and Mable Lyons. His father was his inspiration for performing, thinking and using what you have to survive in this world. Is Said resides in Columbus, Ohio. A widower or 46 years of marriage, father of 3 children, seven grand children, and three great grand children. He served 42 months in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic, (propeller planes) has traveled thru out the Far East, N. Africa, West Africa, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and 36 states in the U.S. Traveling helps you to see other people in the world. Has been writing since 1970, has written 20 books of poetry, “Is Said” “Master Plan” “Push & Shove” “Secret Prayer” “Chasing’ A dream” “Child’s Play” “No Problems” “Magic Power” “Mission Poetry” “It’s the 80s baby, and our dues are paid” “Everybody will be equal after the bomb” “History Makers” “Change is Coming” “Nobody’s Perfect, Nobody’s Safe” “Stop the world, it’s about survival and let us back on” “Property of Africa” “God made us Black” “Symbols of Respect” “Eyes of Peace” (part 1) And “Eyes of Peace’ (part 2) and 4 short stories, “Street Justice”, “The Table Is Set”, “Picking Cotton”, and “I Been Here Before”. He has written more than 50 plays. Has been performing stand up poetry since 1973. He has as performed across the country the USA, W. Africa, N. Africa, and Canada and worked in schools performing poetry and storytelling in Senior Facilities, Universities, penal institutions, homeless shelters, and street corners. Jobs he have had, worked in restaurants, worked for the government, air craft mechanic in the military, auto mechanic, machinist, worked in cable in 1980s, worked for the post office and did free lance poetry for six years until he got employed again, he’s now retired. Is Said works at the Dowd Center, in an after school program, working with children K-5 years old. Helping them to see and understand their own imaginations thru poetry, storytelling, and Haikus, and performing everything they write. He says sometimes when he goes to the Dowd Center, kindergartners ask me, can they tell a story in class? That’s his joy, and their joy too, when the lights comes on in their young minds. Is Said says, he treats all children the same, because they have the same things in common, “Learning how to live”, and that’s why we’re all here on this earth, leaning how to live together. He also says, children are the best audiences, because if you good, they tell you to your face, and when you bad, they tell you to your face too.
