    Prologue

The Rio Grande lay directly in front of us. Our walker waded out while we lie in wait. At his signal 80 migrants walked silently into the water. Our two children went out right in front of us as we silently moved deeper into the violent river in the middle of the night. Watching the red laser in front of us, we walked through the harsh waters with barely a whisper of sound. Ahead of us, we could barely see the banks on the others side but the whole crowd trembled with anticipation of finally arriving in America. We are migrants from Honduras illegally crossing the Mexican/American border. Most of us have family back home that need money to survive. Some come to escape the growing gangs on the streets of Honduras. Even more have family in America that they haven’t seen in years. Some are children. Some never make it and die on the way. It’s the price we pay to take care of our families.

My name is Maria Sol Ortega. America is a dream for us. We see the towering cities on television back home. We see homes for sale with electricity and garages. Cars crowd the streets. School is free and kids are safe there. It is everything we want and more. We think it would be perfect if we just make it there. So we come without papers because America doesn’t want to give us papers. Half of us don’t understand the concept of papers anyway. God says we are all his children therefore brothers and sisters in the only way that matters.

Enough of that though, the laser just clicked off signaling border patrol vehicles. We dropped as low as possible in the water and huddled together. If anything happened we were stuck. No one can run through this river fast enough to escape Border Patrol. The flashlights shine on the river but we can hear the agents talking. The yellow beam from the flashlight passes over a migrant’s head and keeps moving. Soon the light slowly begins shining down the river. I let out a deep sigh of relief at the surprise of not being seen and when the laser reappears, we begin our trek forward again.

The river is strong and beats against my pregnant belly. I have grown tired from nearly a month of constant travel and malnourishment. My feet have giant blisters on and underneath my toes. My legs have cuts, scrapes, bruises, and sores all over them. My hair was matted and I was filthy from head to toe. My back ached like never before and I was so drained I felt I would drop any moment. My children were tired and hungry but they didn’t whine nor
