these writings. In general, anyone who wants or needs a new thought about
themselves or their circumstances will find the spiritual foundation in the The
Secret to a New Life.
If you hunker down and follow the clear script within these covers and experiment

Foreword
By
Jesse Jennings, D.D.
I ’ve known J Thomas Smith for many years and we are still young men! Back in the day,
as people of our generation like to say, we shared an enthusiasm for the Science of Mind teaching, and together sat through classes together under the tutelage of ministers like the ones we ourselves would become. Our enthusiasm has not waned. Only our venues are different. I am a New Thought pulpit minister
and magazine columnist, while J Thomas, previously a pulpit minister, now ministers via psychotherapy, law, and broadcast journalism, as well as authoring this, his first book. He is proficient at everything, passionate about the human condition and compassionate in his service to others. He wants you to know the secret to a new life because when your life gets better, the world around us is better too.
J Thomas is driven by the compulsion to have you really know who you are, and to live, move, and have your being from that place of certainty of God as Universal Cause—and of yourself as the experience God is having of Itself through you. If you hunker down and follow the clear script within these covers and experiment in the laboratory that is your life, in 21 days you will be substantially, recognizably different in your outlook on life and in the quality of your livingness.
You might say, If only it were that simple.
But here’s the thing: it is that simple. It is mainly because of its simplicity that the average person, unlike a mystic, fails to recognize that the process of transforming one’s life is done from the inside out. Going within, the mystic consciously seeks to commune with God and through communion, gains awareness, intuition and direct insight into all the issues of life. The practice of meditation or centering heightens ones awareness. Now, the process is laid before you.
I urge you not to just to read, but to contemplate and then launch into action the principles J Thomas Smith has used to change his life and now, lays them out for you. These principles will help you to grow past fear and doubt and to take charge of your destiny. Employ these principles to transform your life and your enlightenment will contribute to the spiritual evolution of our whole species.

Preface
F ew people are successful by accident. They plan for it. One of my plans was energized in Los Angeles when I was a younger man of 20. I had recently had a conversation with a popular radio-personality. As his go-fer, I became obsessed with the notion of becoming a radio announcer. I expressed my desire to him. Laughingly, his only remark’s were: How are you going to be successful in radio with a lisp? You can barely talk . . .
His comments were not discouraging enough. For with a budget of $10.00, I made my rounds to the neighborhood Goodwill Stores and came away with two kid-type record players, a tape recorder, a bag of marbles and a few gadgets. Next, I returned to my garage apartment where, within a few hours, I converted my living room to a combined speech therapy and recording studio.
For the next six months I nurtured all components of my success machine.
By day I functioned as an actuarial clerk. By night, I was oblivious to all things but my speech development exercises and recording activities. Sometime, between night and day, I dreamed profusely.
I mustered and directed large amounts of energy to my mind, telling it that I was already the air-personality that I envisioned. Soon I was eating, sleeping, and loving my obsession, making sure that not one small fiber of distraction interfered with it. How I recall long hours of vigorous diction exercises; home-made commercial productions; the ordeal of projecting my words at the walls around me; and the calamity of carefully forming words of perfect English despite the barriers posed by crackers, or marbles sloshing around in my mouth.
To my dismay, six months of unkept promises, broken appointments, and excuses from programmers ensued until finally, during a low moment, I ventured into a nightclub in Detroit. It was a hot spot and gathering place for social and business sets alike. As I entered the club an impulse led me to the deserted DJ booth. Sporty J
was nowhere to be found and the spinning record was fading fast.
I opened with a short introduction and moved quickly to promoting the nightclub activities. Before I knew it, one thing led to another. The music pulsated, the crowd was with me . . . I had full control as my dream machine began to stir again.
Suddenly, during an intense moment of communication with my audience, a figure out of nowhere started toward me. Seemingly, he was just another patron wanting to make a request. As he approached, he fired away with questions: What’s your name? Where do you work? Do you have any experience? Would you like to audition at my radio station? You know all the answers. I was offered and accepted a fulltime afternoon drive slot at the station.
My plan for success led to opportunities in major markets around the country including Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, Memphis, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Houston. I’ve work in a number of different radio formats including urban, R & B, gospel, jazz, country, pop, easy listening and news. For a number of years I served as a staff announcer with American Forces Radio and Television Service--being heard in more than 50 countries around the world at the time. My vision began from barely being able to talk
to earning the distinction of being named "Air-Personality of the Year on Pop Radio" by Black Radio Exclusive magazine.
Success continued to follow as I voiced and appeared in commercials for various agencies throughout the country. I was selected to project various acting roles for industrial training films and occasional assignments as a commercial product model. Winning ways followed as I served as a columnist and feature writer for several publications writing on a wide range of topics such as mental health, metaphysics, entertainment, nutrition and current events.
Today, one of my firmest convictions is that there are no barriers to education or anything else one wishes to achieve as long as it is legal and in harmony with the laws of Nature. We must pursue things in the way that things work. We can’t get potatoes from lettuce seeds. There is nothing and no one who can keep one from accomplishing that which he or she truly and deeply wants to achieve if one has the capacity and is willing to do what is required for success. Not only that, I believe that once you decide, the power which is God, will guide you to people and resources to help you in your pursuits. This is true, whether you know it or not. While it is sometimes difficult to explain this to the uninitiated, I do believe and know that it is true. It is that conviction and determination that has led me to various academic and professional pursuits and service to the community and various national organizations. It was also that conviction that made me say yes to law school—and pursuing my life-long dream of becoming a lawyer and practicing law.
When I started out, I knew nothing of my Secret Power, but I used it anyway just as you are using It
