DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to all of the dear people I have met, who have so graciously shared their stories of miracles with me.
I believe that miracles occur daily, but we are so busy living our lives we are not always aware how God is interacting with us. We must make the time to savor every moment.
FORWARD
My journey with God began the day I was born. I remember Mama telling of my birth and how the doctor had to work trying to bring breath into my body. There has never been a time when I did not worship my God.
Since I have experienced so many wonderful, uplifting experiences… dare I call these miracles? It is necessary that I record these miracles for my children, grandchildren and following generations. These precious moments must not be lost with time.
This book will include the stories my dear friends and relatives have shared with me. It is through sharing these stories that our faith is strengthened. People have always been willing to share their religious experiences with me and I treasure their sincerity.
As these stories were related to me, there was no doubt in my mind that they truly occurred. However, to protect these precious folk, some of their names shall remain anonymous.
THE MIMOSA TREE
My husband died at the end of October when we were living in our home on Rustling Oak Trail, in Austin, Texas. This was a wonderful home, one I had always dreamed of owning.
We had a large back porch that extended from our master bedroom, across the back of our house, to the kitchen, with the living room and dining room windows overlooking the porch. There was even a door from our bedroom opening onto the porch. I could walk across the complete back of this house across the porch. It was a delightful home and I so enjoyed the porch.
There was a mimosa tree in the backyard. The tree was at the far end of the porch, located near the kitchen. It was a huge tree, and full of blossoms. But that was the problem… the blossoms.
Each morning the porch would be covered with the fallen blossoms. I would take a large brown, paper bag from the grocery store, along with my broom and dust pan, and sweep up the blossoms. The bag would be almost full of blossoms every day.
This was a daily occurrence. The day after Mac died I went on to the back porch to drink a cup of coffee. I carried my grocery sack and broom, as always, and was shocked to see no blossoms on the porch. I did this for three consecutive days and there were no blossoms on the porch. Mind you, the tree was full of blossoms, but none had fallen. Why? It gave me an eerie feeling. Was Mac helping me? Strange things do happen. This glorious tree, full of blossoms, and yet not one single sign of anything dropping from the tree when I had previously had bags full of fallen blossoms each day.
Since Christ rose on the third day, I somehow think that maybe our soul stays around for three days. I don’t know this to be a fact. But who cleaned up the blossoms from the porch for three days, when I had religiously cleaned the porch of blossoms for weeks?
On the fourth day I went home with my son Steve to spend a few days and rest. A week later, upon returning home, the porch was again covered with mimosa blossoms.
A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE
It was several weeks before Mac shared the fact with me that he had had a religious experience while he was in Seton Hospital.
We thought Mac had arthritis. He had hurt in his bones and joints for several years, with the pain progressing with time. He had been to numerous doctors, and had been going regularly to a physical therapist but the pain just persisted.
Finally I phoned his arthritic doctor and told him this could not go on any longer, for Mac had endured this severe pain long enough. The doctor asked that we come to his office at 8:30 the following morning and when he saw Mac he sent him straight to Seton Hospital.
Upon arrival at Seton Hospital, he was given a room on the cancer patient
floor. Soon a doctor arrived with a pad and pen in hand and announced he would soon have a diagnosis. After consulting with several doctors, it was decided he had prostate cancer that had progressed to the bone and they must do surgery to remove his prostate.
The night following his surgery, a nurse came into the room and walked him to a chair. He was to sit while she changed the linens on his bed.
The nurse changed the bed and left him sitting in the chair for a while. It was during this time that he saw a very bright light enter into his room. It came in through the door and then came right up to him. He recognized the light as being Jesus Christ.
The light said to him, You are Mac McCown and because of who you are, this is just a part of your life. You are married to Eula Rae, you have three sons, and cancer is just a part of your life.
Mac felt like he was agreeing with Christ and then Christ touched the top of his head and it felt to him as if warm oil came down and covered his whole body. Then the light left the room.
Mac said a peace and a calm came over him like he had never experienced before. He never was afraid during this interaction with Christ or later during his sickness, as the disease progressed. It has been my experience that Christ never comes to frighten but only to comfort and Mac was certainly comforted by this experience.
I remember one day in particular, when he suffered so badly from the pain. That night as we said our prayers, as usual, Mac said, Thank you God for being so good to me this day.
He maintained a serenity and calmness throughout the progression of the disease.
He was told when he was diagnosed that he might live for six months, but he lived for two-and-a-half years and they were good years.
CARL ETON’S
STORY
While attending church at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, one Sunday I heard the Rev. Carl Eton tell this story. It is one that all should hear.
Carl Eton was the pastor of one of the largest Presbyterian Churches in Austin. He was the first pastor the church called and he remained as pastor of the church for over 20 years. He was very much admired and loved by
