    2 Peter 1:5-8

    "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue;

    and to virtue knowledge;

    And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience;

    and to patience godliness;

    And to godliness brotherly kindness;

    and to brotherly kindness charity.

    For if these things be in you, and abound, they make [you that ye shall] neither [be] barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Preface

    It was not until I finally became a parent that I realized the true value of much of the counsels I received, as a boy, from my parents. Dozens of times I found my self wishing that these counsels were somehow documented in a book. Only then would I have had the convenience of researching and highlighting a specific subject matter whenever and wherever the need arose. Unfortunately, because of the passage of time, I can no longer recall some of these precious directives. Rather than sulking at my forfeited gain, I thought to do my children the service of having my counsels to them written in this book. My hope is that they will someday realize the worth of the counsels I have taken the time to jot down on these pages.

    The concept in this book mirrors that contained in the book of Proverbs:

    A departing father discloses all the wisdom he has acquired during his lifetime to his adult children, hoping to make them better prepared to meet life’s challenges.

    It is my belief that this reflects the aspiration of most parents the world over. So although the thoughts, philosophies, and experiences are mine, I hope to capture the essence of other parents’ desire for their children, on the following pages.

    May this book be used as a tool, in the hands of all parents to equip their mature children for life’s challenges!

    Acknowledgements

    The completion of any effort, literary or otherwise, is never brought about through the efforts of one person. This book is no exception. Therefore for the efforts and assistance of all who have contributed in any way, I want to express my sincere gratitude.

    My thanks go first of all, to my Heavenly Father: for extending His manifold blessings towards me, especially in this instant where He has allowed me to finish this book; thereby achieving the great satisfaction one gets from the culmination of a mammoth task.

    Thanks too, to my beloved friend, Misha Richards: for getting the message clearly across that I really needed to finish this book, and for her continued moral, intellectual and financial support.

    To my mom, Eulene Greenland: for her patience with me as a mother and for assisting with those sentences and paragraphs that gave me a fight, I say a big thank-you.

    To Mahlah Souffrant: for expressing her brutish opinion that led me to re-think and even re-write sections of this book, I say, more power to you.

    I also thank my Father: Victor Greenland who always tried to convince me that I had the ability to achieve great things, and for his constant and insistent encouragement.

    I will be ever grateful to Eton Reid: who was my father figure, role model, friend, and boss; so many things to me at so many different times, but most of all, the source of motivation to write this book.

    Lots of kudos to Ralph Shivers: for the many occasions he guided my misguided conceptions, and reassured me of our friendship.

    To my faithful and loving wife: Marsharee; for being there, especially during those odd moments when inspiration came knocking and I had to drop everything and write the words down, thanks for your love and patience.

    All individuals, with whom I have interacted at different stages of my life, while not mentioned here by name, have in their own ways, molded the thoughts that I have here recorded. The word Thanks! may seem insufficient to express the immensity of the gratitude I wish to express to all, but with very little alternative, I express it with utmost sincerity.

    Introduction

    It is well understood that the inventors of the automobile intended to revolutionize travel. But did they also intend that their invention, or one of its byproducts, would develop the capability of directing man’s very behavior? Did they know that this invention would inspire the creation of such a thing as a traffic report, and that it would serve the important purpose of helping individuals decide on a particular route of travel? If indeed they knew, one can only infer, These inventors were geniuses!

    The use of the traffic report to help choose a route of travel is indeed notable. Its development is a necessary by-product of the invention of the automobile. However this is only one of a list of significant by-products of the introduction of the motor vehicle.

    Other by-products include paved roads, road service centers and traffic signals. All are members of a larger system that I refer to as the ‘Transportation System’. Without these components transportation could not occur as profitably as it does today.

    For any system to be successfully maintained there has to be a list of principles that sustains it. For example, if a government declares that it is democratic there has to be a set of rules that it abides by, that makes it a successful democracy. Similarly the systems in our bodies must follow certain courses in order to maintain functionality. It therefore follows that for a person to maintain a successful way of life, there has to be a list of guiding principles that must be followed.

    I could here present the principles observed by some successful business man and advise you
