The Gift of Alzheimer's

About this ebook
Lisa Novak
After learning about my mother’s Alzheimer’s and watching her battle it for years, I decided to write a short story about my journey with her. Every time I looked for books to read about Alzheimer’s, they provided helpful medical advice, but nothing personal. I hope telling my story will help inform and encourage others going through this disease, either themselves or with their loved ones. I live in Houston, Texas, and often travel to Tucson, Arizona, where my husband is from. I am a hair salon owner and stylist, and I write and perform music with my husband throughout the United States and Europe. We wrote a song honoring my mother and have included a link to it in this book.

FOREWORD
In a perfect world we would all have our essential papers in order. Legal papers that state our wishes concerning our care, our wills, power of attorney or appointed guardianships in the event that we become unable to care for ourselves or make our own decisions due to accidents or aging. I have listened to many stories of families torn apart by such situations as they struggle to agree upon making these decisions for a parent or spouse that did not make their wishes known in writing ahead of time.
If you are reading this book, my guess is that you know or have known someone dealing with the disease of Alzheimer’s. My prayer is that all involved in these situations can work together to support each other rather than adding to the already enourmous weight of caring for the Alzheimer’s patient.
I began writing my story in 2010 after my mother was diagnosed with early to mid stage Alzheimer’s. I was touring in Germany with my boyfriend’s band and found myself with free hours everyday to reflect and write as we traveled to the next city to perform. Even being so far away, my thoughts
