Warm-Up
It’s rough leaving college without a concrete plan to make money. As a student-athlete, you hear that many people don’t become professionals at the sport that they played in college. So when I was getting ready to graduate from Seton Hall University, after a pretty decent basketball career, and the NBA lockout was getting ready to go into effect, I was apprehensive. All the NBA camps and summer leagues were cancelled in June 1998. My options were shrinking. I thought about the FBI, since I did have a degree in Criminal Justice, but they needed three years of work experience. Options were getting even smaller.
Then one day my agent asked me if I had considered playing professional basketball overseas. Seriously? I heard rumors about not getting paid, but besides that I could count the countries that I knew had teams on one hand. So when my agent told me that a team in the Czech Republic had offered me a spot, I was excited but panicked. Then I checked the map. Although I didn’t make it to the NBA which was my dream, I still had the opportunity to live out my dream of playing professional basketball, just in a different country. So I took it.
And thirteen years later, I would still encourage anyone who has the opportunity to play basketball overseas to go. This may be a mental stretch, but it’s a good way to continue playing basketball, to earn a living, and to experience a different way of life. Playing professional basketball overseas has given me everything I have financially and was one of the best decisions I made in my life. Being overseas, has helped me to develop into the person that I am today. As I look back, if I didn’t go overseas, I wouldn’t have met my beautiful fiancée who is from the Czech Republic. If I didn’t go overseas, I wouldn’t have had the chance to visit some of the most amazing places in the world. Going overseas has given me the opportunity to meet some wonderful people that I’m sure I will remain friends with forever.
Going overseas doesn’t get as much attention
