His birth was a miracle, they realize. They cant quite grasp the unshakable fact their son somehow holds the key to the destiny of humanity. A fatal decision alters everything, including the perfect life they had envisioned for their infant son.

As their son Mark matures into manhood, he pursues a career as a paramedic. On an emergency call, he meets an elderly woman and soon finds himself immersed in a world he never imagined. As a battle between good and evil ensues, Mark is caught in the middle. With whom does his allegiance rest? His emotional life is turned inside out as he faces his beliefs about angels and their place in his world.

    CHAPTER 1

M ark Hampton never really liked snow … driving in it anyway. He always thought that if it had to snow, it was better he was inside looking at it from his picture window than outside shoveling. He hated shoveling. He knew it was good exercise, pushing it around the driveway from one side to another. It burns a lot of calories , he often thought to himself.

He couldn’t sleep; he was too agitated. He needed to figure out what he was going to do. What happens now?

His bones felt achy as he stretched and leaned back in an old, wooden, high-back rocking chair. It creaked on the floor beneath him with every move. Every sound in the room was magnified. His once happy home felt dead.

He was cold, which was no surprise. He wandered downstairs in bare feet and half-dressed in sweats. The hairs on his chest sprang to life. This house was poorly insulated. That was no surprise either. He and his father William never got around to making it the perfect home for him and his wife, Jasmine. They never would.

The sun had begun to peek out from the clouds in the early morning sky, over a rooftop across the street. It was quite beautiful. It was conjuring up images of a great time in his mind. He didn’t want to move from his chair. He felt as if he could sit there for hours. The sunlight was bouncing off the snow-capped branches on the trees just in front of the picture window. Depending upon where your eyes wandered, it could be blinding.

As he sat there, he was reminded of many things. He felt transported back in time to the first day he met his bride, Jasmine. She was, in a word, stunning. Her brown eyes called out to him like music. He was hypnotized. Her smile could brighten a room. He was delighted by her. Her cocoa skin was soft to the touch whenever he caressed her face. She’d shy away from his gaze, as if she felt she wasn’t good enough for him. Deep down, they both knew better. She was everything to him. Every breath he took was for her, because of her.

One of the things Mark loved about her (and there were too many to count) was her hair, her long, brown hair. It cascaded like a waterfall over her shoulders. Those few moments she’d spin around in surprise and look at him with a sexy grin were priceless. The sound of her laugh was dirty, playful, and seductive. Those were the moments he treasured. She was all things to him, rolled into a heavenly, angelic package. Why did she pick him? Why did she love him? She told him once. Each word she spoke hung in the air when she said it, and he grabbed at it as if he could clutch it in his hands. As he sat there quietly, he believed he could hear them even now, as if she were whispering in his ear.

Mark, you are exactly who I have been looking for my whole life. You’re tall and handsome. Your smile is killer. I love those deep set brown eyes. They’re brooding, but I like that. It makes you look mysterious.

Mark smiled when she said that. His mother had always told him when he was younger, Child, you have those devil eyes. Jasmine’s words filled him with hope—a hope his fate was not sealed.

Your chocolate-brown skin is luscious. Most men I know don’t have such flawless skin. What’s your secret? she asked him once. She liked to tease. He loved that about her.

Suddenly, a loud sound jolted him from his reminiscing. He could no longer deny what needed to be done. When he looked down at his hands, the proof was evident. Red … all he could see was red.

The sounds above him became louder. What had he done? He tried to reason with the thoughts competing in his mind.

I have to do it. It’s the right thing to do.

Mark stood up from the rocking chair and stretched his arms wide. His body began to transform, and suddenly the room went dark. His wings were fully outstretched. He was disgusted with himself. This was not the color he was promised.

He gazed at the photo on a nearby table and apologized to the young girl smiling back at him.

Eliza, I’m so sorry, he said as if she could hear him. He wiped a tear from his eye.

He walked to the foot of the stairs and knew she had not succumbed. He would have to finish her tonight. She cannot take another breath … not today, not ever.

And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

    Mark 1:27

    January 27, 1975

The snow came down steadily. William Hampton cleaned off his car with his gloves. He had broken his snowbrush the night before and neglected to purchase a new one. Today of all days was not the time for this to happen. The weather was horrible, a frigid twenty-five degrees. He surveyed the car one last time and made his way back to the house to get his wife, Sadie.

Sadie was in pain … and in labor. William did all he could to comfort her as they rushed to Good Shepherd Hospital. Their car was barely adequate. The heater was working poorly. It was a hand-me-down from his father, Cletus, and all William could afford on his salary at the drugstore. Jobs were scarce. He was doing his best to care for his wife—and now a new child.

Hold on, Sadie. We’re almost there, William said, holding her hand tightly.

She continued to cringe in agony. I know, William. Please hurry.

William and Sadie had been together for what seemed like forever. She worked as a bookkeeper in a small accounting office. The day she walked into the drugstore where William worked, he was immediately mesmerized by her. She had smiled at him as she asked where to find a bottle of aspirin. He practically fell over himself trying to walk her to the proper aisle.

Here it is, he told her.

Oh, thank you, she said as he handed her the bottle, his hand casually grazing hers. From then on, they were inseparable.

William thought about that moment as he drove his wife to the hospital. She was his world, and his life was about to get a lot more complicated.

They rounded the corner and pulled into the emergency parking lot. He quickly exited the car and ran to retrieve his wife. She cautiously made her way out of the car, and he held her arm as they both slowly walked to the entrance and waiting area.

Sit down here, and I’ll get some help.

Okay, she said calmly, trying her best to hold back the pain.

    Excuse me, William said.

Yes, sir? the nurse at the desk responded.

My wife is in labor. The contractions are about ten minutes apart.

    Have you called her doctor?

    Yes. He’s on the way.

    Let’s get her back.

    Thank you.

The nurse appeared before Sadie with a wheelchair, and she took a seat. William smiled at her, and she took his hand.

You’ll be fine, he told her in a warm tone.

I know, she said, smiling back at him.

What should have been a normal
