CHAPTER 1
Adrenaline was pumping rapidly through Leigh’s veins in response to the threatening presence of something exciting and foreboding, yet she could not see the force that caused her heart to beat so wildly. It was not exactly danger that she sensed, but it was more like the thrill of an intriguing mystery. Everything appeared in shadows of black and white, mostly black, and Leigh was surrounded by this intimidating presence. Even as she trembled in fear, she acknowledged the pull of the force that not only increased her heart rate but also seemed to promise an intense romance within this realm of danger.
Leigh tried to see what was in the shadows; however, she could not distinguish any shapes in the dark. She walked carefully through the dark, afraid she would run into something. A glowing light, like a light at the end of a tunnel, appeared in the distance, and the light beckoned Leigh, but the path to the light was obscured. Every time she tried to find a new path, she would lose the light and be forced to go back in the direction from which she came. Leigh agonized over her inability to reach the light and was enslaved by her desire to reach it.
Leigh was petrified by her inability to reach the safety of the light, and the dark threatening presence was feasting upon her fear. The danger was being fueled by Leigh’s doubt and insecurity that she would never be able to reach the light. What a nightmare! Would the light reveal the identity of the mysterious presence? Leigh was desperate to step back into the light, where she knew she would be safe and out of the murky darkness.
Fear caused Leigh to sob violently, and her whole body trembled and racked. In the distance, she heard someone calling her name and she was relieved that she was no longer alone. No one appeared, but they just kept calling her name, Leigh . . . Leigh!
Slowly she began to ease out of the darkness, and her fear dissipated. She awoke to her mother saying loudly, Leigh, if you don’t get up right now, you’re going to be late to school!
Leigh answered her mother by opening her eyes, but she did not say a word. After her mother left the room, she rolled over and sat on the side of the bed, realizing just how tired she was from yesterday’s shopping trip. Was the dream a product of her fatigue or was the dream a foreshadowing of the future? Either way, Leigh knew it would be a long time before she would be able to relinquish the effects of her dream.
Just yesterday morning, Leigh had been very excited about the senior trip to Cancun and at the prospect of buying new clothes. Missy, her best friend, was going to pick her up at ten o’clock for a whole day of shopping. When she was dressed, she ventured downstairs to grab something for breakfast and found her mother drinking coffee.
What time will Missy be here?
Leigh’s mom asked.
We planned it for ten, so that we could have the whole day to shop. I want to get everything I could possibly need for the week’s trip. I plan to use money from my trust fund. We’re going to have a great time today!
Leigh’s dad died in a car accident a few years ago, and the money he left her had been set up in a trust fund.
To Leigh’s relief, Missy pulled into the driveway and honked just in the nick of time to end their conversation. We will be very late, so don’t wait for me for supper. We plan to hit each and every store today! See ya later!
Leigh ran down the driveway toward Missy’s car with more excitement than she had felt in a long time. She thought her life was very boring. Flying for the first time to a tropical island was the greatest thing ever. She quickly jumped into the car, and Missy backed out of the driveway.
I can see it now!
Missy said, laughing. White beaches, blue water, and handsome guys fawning all over us!
Fawning, huh? More like they’ll be blinded by our pearly white bodies. So let’s hit the tanning salon first!
Leigh offered, and both girls burst into giggles.
Leigh returned home from shopping around ten-thirty that night extremely tired and she had school in the morning, but she was pleased with all her purchases and, of course, her newly-acquired tan. She had her first pedicure so she could wear her new sandals with all the cute outfits. She threw her bags on a chair in her room, jumped into some comfy pajamas, and fell asleep immediately. The dream that ensued that Sunday night to captivate Leigh within minutes will dominate her nights and become the mysterious influence of her days.
On Monday morning before spring break, Leigh still couldn’t believe that her mother had consented to her going to Cancun with the senior class. It would be the first time she would be that far from home and she would be on her own for seven days. No parents and no curfews! What a great experience for someone who had never even been out of her hometown!
Missy found Leigh at school at the same place they met every morning, sitting in the cafeteria working on some assignments. Missy sat down across the table from Leigh. Were you as tired as I was last night? I had an awful time getting up this morning.
Leigh couldn’t wait to tell Missy about her dream, I fell asleep immediately and had the strangest nightmare. It was dark and scary, except I knew there was something romantic and mysterious lurking around me. I tried to get to the light in the distance, but I never reached it. Do you think dreams mean anything?
Was anyone in particular in your dream or anything you recognized?
Missy asked.
No, just the presence of a romantic, yet mysterious essence. I believe that if I could have reached the light, someone would have been there.
Maybe it was just all the excitement from shopping. You were anxious about the trip.
I don’t know, Missy, there was more to it than being tired and anxious over the trip.
Leigh could not explain why she knew the dream was exclusively about her future or how fear and romance would be exciting.
I can see you’re really upset by the dream, but, after all, it was just a dream. We have more pressing matters to consider, we have school for the next five days and then we’re off to an island paradise.
You’re right, Missy! Let’s get to class and make the most of the week.
Leigh would not dismiss the dream, but she let Missy think she had.
School passed by much too slowly the week before spring break for Leigh. It seemed she had way too much homework, but at least it helped pass the time. Any free time Leigh had, was consumed by Sunday night’s nightmare. Did the dream really hold any significance or was it just a product of Leigh being tired from the long day of shopping? Leigh decided to not let the dream influence her trip, because she wasn’t going to let anything dampen her enthusiasm.
On Saturday of Spring Break, Leigh turned to wave good-bye to her parents as she boarded the jet. It was her first time to fly and her enthusiasm was very evident. Missy let Leigh have the window seat during the
