Participants of Spiderlake - Frank F. Atanacio

    HEARTS

    Such Modesty!

The child contented himself with laughter,

But seeing the pleased expression on his face

    drove the beast wild.

    Grasping the child’s chin

and forcibly turning his face to and fro,

so he could examine the smile.

The child full of heart touched the demon’s face,

    and smiled with such endearment,

his fingers caressing the disgust that was

    before him.

    Enough, Child!

    the beast demanded.

He grabbed the child’s throat and tried to

    squeeze it,

    but he couldn’t.

    He couldn’t kill the child.

    Your heart touched my heart,

whispered the beast as he released the child.

    LAURA KIMBER

The first thing she was conscious of

    upon walking toward the lake

was the mass quantities of spiders.

They rushed back toward the water

    when she approached,

She didn’t know whether to run

    or just simply scream.

Laura Kimber froze in shocked confusion,

as the spiders walked toward her,

    her arms drew back

and something began to crawl on her leg.

    She looked on her arm,

and noticed it covered with spiders,

it completely pulled her out of the haze

    she was in.

    She regained her true consciousness,

    and the spiders were gone,

    into the lake,

Run Laura, no matter what it takes!

    DEAD

    in the casket,

    i smell the wood

    my mind closed,

    as it should,

    images lost,

    at no cost,

    no dreams, no nightmares,

and no openings to the basket,

    No more breaking bread,

no more sharing dreams, or wisdom,

    And the living finally

    Becomes the dead.

    IF GOD

If god’s fingers could reach out to you,

and cure your heart of all diseases,

    Would you reach it,

    touch it?

If god’s breath could wash away

    the hurt in your heart,

    Would you breathe it in,

    inhale it?

If god’s wisdom could be your wisdom,

    would you accept it,

    use it,

    and help your fellow Man?

    If god abandons you,

and separates his heart from yours,

    would you curse him,

    throw stones at him?

    If god changes his mind

and turns his back on you,

    would you consider retaliation?

    What are your perceptions,

and why do we have them?

    God could, but he wouldn’t,

    would you?

    GUILT

    Escaping the guilt,

    call it failure,

    call it creation,

    but guilt is guilt.

He tried to teach her quietly

    to keep still,

    and her unforgiving mind

    wouldn’t let up.

    No knowledge of the sin,

at first he considered it a win win,

    and the guilt flows,

    all losers, and no winners,

    goodness thwarted,

    and evil glows.

All the guilt in the world couldn’t …

    YOU ARE NOT YET AWAKE

    You are not yet awake,

    the shadow moves around you,

keeping you wondering if it is

    a dream or nightmare.

    You are not yet awake

to feel the fingers on your face,

    wanting salvation, wanting grace.

it looks with love upon you,

    perhaps evaluating your life,

    wondering if you should stay,

or allow you to follow it home,

    to the final resting place.

    You are not yet awake,

    perhaps for the better,

    perhaps not.

    VIOLATION,

    Cold night,

    lack of light,

    something happened

    that could never be right.

    Hard look,

    not misunderstood,

    something happened

    in the neighborhood.

    A number of three,

    and
