    Chapter 1

    ‘ASCENSION’

    NORTHERN ONTARIO, CANADA

My names Diego Rinard, I’m a lycan, a werewolf. I live in the northern section of Canada. Most mortals are afraid of us with good reason. With such tales as werewolves stalking mortals in books and movies to played out their fears. Most legends start out with a man who gets bitten by a wolf. I was born with a genetic gene that transform me into a bloodthirsty animal. A beast that is design to kill for hunger or thirst for the sport even lust after the flesh. A beast within that won’t be silence anymore. Some myths are cause by someone’s fears or misled to what mortals don’t understand that grew into hate from someone who’s different. Men fought with the beast over hundreds of centuries ago. Our ancestry’s tells how our people lived and fought. Our lives are like the great Native American Tribes. We share so many tales that many of the were-folks became endanger to what mortal’s fears. We hunt with our pack. Share our sources with others over time we learn. We were split into individual groups. The were-folks and the coy’s. The were-folks community had made peace. Our ancestry made a documentary treaty with the mortals that share our peaceful homeland. The treaty that mortal and were-folk would live together as two communities. We have land to live off for exchange our protection for them.

Then the rumors would start. They settle down for a while then they would spread like wildfire. All from someone’s misguided tale. From those spread lies had soon divided us. The mortals wanted their land back and their treaty with us was destroy in seconds. One by one they had fallen. We were shamed. Families were burn out and left homeless. Thrown stones. Ran out of their homes in the middle of the night. Hung if caught stealing. Shot if spotted nearby. Our children were taken from us. Our small community we lived became uproar. Spread poison food our children would die. We then were divided up ourselves. Reasons were out of our own fears. The questions begin. Who’ll be next? What would happen to us? Where would we go?

So many unanswered questions that made us give up on two things. Hope. Peace. Our world we were so familiar was driven out of us. Now we became what we fear most. The animals we try so desperately not to become. We fought against each other. Like mortals wars had leap out in us. A real bloodbath, brothers against brothers, fathers against sons. Our pups died from lack of food and water. We were becoming our fears, a beast that overrides our subconscious minds. Destroying our beliefs and religious. We had turned on our own. Then the individuals we were split into another whole brand new clans. Subspecies. Our lives had been shattered like those before us. Pups would be either born to us healthy would soon pay our price while others would die from unknown illness. Some would be deformed. How many more deaths will it take to undo one simple mistake?

In our community there are one set of leaders. The alpha pair, the male and the female and which included the beta, the omega, and the followers. The alpha pair is only allowed to mate to carry the next generation of offspring’s. Out of four-dozen pups a year, I survive from the alpha mating pair. When my parents were older and the generations that had hope for the future die with them. I was next in line to be the bred winner in the family. The role became clear on my fourth month birthday.

I was raised to believe in the old treaty to keep my pack alive and hope for a better future. Live in peace with our kind and mortals. I’d then married an alpha female and hope to share the next generation’s hopes in our offspring’s together. My wife, Isabel is a real full blood coy. A rare bred. A hybrid that was bred a cross between a dog and coyote. She was not born from a were-folk close net family. She was adopted by two were-folks. She’s a strikingly young beauty who stands five foot seven with long flaming red hair that grew down to her waist. She has the most purist green eyes. She has amazingly tight little figure wearing a brilliant golden colored gown that her foster mother bought her. She’s a very clever and intelligent young woman of twenty-eight. She then gave birth to twins, a son and daughter last night. But tragedy struck us, the curse had struck again, they were stillborn. It broke my heart to watch her as she go through the labor to deliver two defenseless little lifeless red hair bodies. To turn around on the same day, bury them when they were just newborns.

Elder Corvinus Hirsch, a well-build man who stood six foot one with long brown with gray mixed in his hair and chocolate colored brown eyes. He’s a fifty-nine year old elder who’s wearing a monk clothing and me took their bodies and buried them deep underground. We posted a sign on their graves. Then Elder Corvinus spoke a small prayer to give them rest for the afterlife. We, wolves are not all religious but most are. He spoke about heaven and god to guard us through this tragic. I gave my own silent pray. We headed back when Ares Leduc, my beta, a black wolf, who’s in his mid twenties or early thirties when he’s human, had raced toward us. Elder. Diego. Me and the others gave our deepest sorrow to your lost. I nod at his heartfelt grief greeting to me.

I know Isabel is in another world of her own. She was stricken with a disease of the mind. We are no different the mortals are. When it comes to losing our love ones. We have the same feelings as the mortals do. We fight our inner demons in the same way the mortal does. Her disease made me rethink our life here. I’m no doctor but I know when I seen it in my own eyes witnesses her odd behavior. I read up the subject about mortals doing the same. Once a child is born dead the mind of any woman go to a place to replace the tragic.

I should have sense it coming but it came without knowledge. The elders say it was part of our curse. Being this close to the villagers. We might have overlook something. I raised my head to the harvest moon. It is upon us again. It’s the sign of the gathering. Once an ever year, the harvest moon turn full. It brings the elders and the others to the calling. It’s a family reunion only in our case wolves. It is to see who be our next male in line to be the next elder of the great circle. This mean we have be one with the gods above to test our strength. I have this hole in me that great gods don’t approve of. We have to learn our scrolls of the past to be complete. These cycle of life lessons are dangerous for those to learn the full power of the wolf. Inside each of us we battle our blood thirst ever year. Some who cross the path will either devoted to the circle or go mad. Isabel needs a life without our pack. She needs to confront her illness and return to the mountains. There we can get her the help she needed. If we go she would be leaving her love ones behind. The journey would be too great for her or she would be lost to me. Our love isn’t as strong as I had hope for.

Yesterday, I witness her chattering about to our pups. When they are lying six feet underground. She would chat about as if they were there yelping at her to feed them. I could not believe my eyes as she sees them there when they weren’t. But I didn’t answer to her mind games. I went to the library where I had found years ago, inside was stonewalls of our home. It was a slave tunnel for the mortals. I had educated myself to the mortal’s ways. I wanted to understand our enemies better. She will soon won’t acknowledge me ever been there. I hear her running about as if she was playing tag with them. I had to make myself distant from her fragile mind. I can’t help it. She is responding to them as if they were real. I can’t help her. Tonight, I’m going to make an excuse to go see the elder. I hate to leave her with her mind like it is. She might get hurt. I’ll ask Isabel’s sister, Java to watch her while I’m gone. I sure they are better at the games she is playing then me.

Java is the only real biology pup that their parents had. They live within the tribe. She’s a young classic looking teenage goddess, a five foot six with long black shoulder length hair and deep penetrating ocean blue eyes. She has a nice rounded little figure typical for today’s youth. Unlike her sister she humorous and less serious minded. Committed to help those in need in our community. She’s learning how to become our medicine woman like her mother.

Kate Sheridan, an African American older mortal woman who happens to have fallen in love with a were-folk. She’s a dazzling stunningly pretty face. She’s a five foot five with long soft white hair and laser blue eyes. Her incredibly tight and all natural figure in a red shirt and jeans. She believes in her children’s ability to decide what is best for them. She loves me as her own. I love her the same affection she has for me. I never knew what parental love was until she came along. She is known for her healing and other medicine from the earth.

Thailog is a were-folk and cunning male of my kind. He’s a square-jawed hunk with well-muscled physique and stands six foot ten. His skin is darker than myself with long flowing white and deep golden eyes as they glow. In essence becoming the moral opposite of me. He was taught a bit too well. He is profoundly greedy, unrepentant treacherous and seeks to totally dominate those under him. He began a relationship with Kate who allowed him to cooperate with her into marrying her. However, the smitten she was remain at his side despite his betrayal. He went against me in the wars of man and beast. I served with scars and he left without gaining his pride. He hates me for it. And wished his leadership was in place of my own.

I can’t stand it watching her day after day losing her is killing me. I know pups come and go through out the months before the winter comes. I don’t want to think about it. She made deer meat with some fruits on the side. I watch as she made a small portion for the pups. I had to get out of here. She giggles as if the child made a mess. Cooing at them as if they were making a sound. I can’t stand it. Anymore of this and I’ll be going mad. I made my exit. Isa, I’m needed by the Elder. I think it’s about the harvest. There was no respond until I mention the harvest. Harvest? You think they are going to ask you join the elder’s circle. Oh, Diego. I’m so happy. Did you hear that Jin and Tang? Your father is going to join the circle won’t that be exciting. I watch as my heart is torn out of my chest as she bends down talking to our dead pups. I got to leave. She hugged me before I made a move. I kissed her cheek as if accepting her game. I walked out to breathe better. The night air touches my silver mane. I walked in the short distance. The elder’s camp isn’t far. I had to get out into the cool air. The smell of the fresh air was to clear my thoughts. Before I forget I raced toward Java’s place.

Knocking on the door. Java, its me. I announce my arrival. I could hear their parents inside and one of them is coming to the door. Oh, it’s Diego. Dear. I gave a sheepish smile at my mother in law. Hello, Kate. This is a surprise visit. Is there something wrong? Is something wrong with Isabel? No, Kate. She’s fine. Is Java in? I walked in as she let me by. I got inside to see the old man’s piercing cold icy stare. I looked for any sign of remorse. He moved to the den. I followed, out of old habit. There he served himself his human’s drinks. I had some stash away myself. So, tell me the news. He said, using his old man’s charms. Nothing to tell. She is got the sickness. As if his worst nightmare hit him as his eyes cramp down hard to erase the news. I came for Java to sit with her. His eyes snapped open as soon as my words came. Java isn’t going near her. She is your wife. You marry her. I didn’t want her to. Out of my pure judgment I had allowed it. Now, she is got those fools human’s disease. I told her not to marry you and look where it got her. Damnation is where. You are nothing to me. You aren’t welcome here. Get out. He shouted at me.

I grip my fist together hard as my furious temper reaches its peak. I then shouted back at him. Why you, son of a bitch. First of all, your daughter was capable of marrying anyone else besides me. She chooses me out of love. I didn’t deserve her, I grant you that. But damn, if I’m going to stand here. And hear you past judgment on me. I made our pack the way it is today. I made the decision on my own. I didn’t get her pregnant out of loyalty to you, you selfish bastard. I got her pregnant out of love for her. I didn’t want pups I told her that. I don’t see myself as a father but she had shown me differently. She gave me more love then any before. I hated it when I have to turn tail to come here. I came for Java to sit her. I don’t want her to get hurt while I’m gone. I’m going to the elder’s for the cure. You rotten bastard, so shove that up your ass. I’m out of here as soon as Java is ready. I want to cure her. You, worthless piece of shit. Showing my fangs to make my statement as his venom twisted at me. I heard his growl as his angry was getting the best. I stood up to the old bastard.

Java came cheerful in to see us bearing our fangs and snarling at each other as she step in between us. I stood my ground. Papa, stop it. You know he’s the hierarchy. Don’t make him angry. I flash my fangs again to shown my authority. He wanted the title I’ve claim. I know it. I was the first to come by it. By the rights of our law, I was born with the title. You aren’t born with the title unless you were royalty, which I was blessed. I stood my grounds as my sister in law show her courage and stood up to her father. I felt the demon inside was about to erupt again, if I didn’t go now. I moved toward the door of the den only to turn half way to toward Java. Isa needs company. She needs you to stay while I’m gone. I don’t like it when she’s home alone. Could you sit with her just until I come back? She’s sick and needs someone she knows. It was a lie. She was actually buying it. As she rush to her room to get her mother’s medicine for the sick. I felt sick watching for her to cure with her potions to what ails her incurable sister. She left at the same time as I went in another direction I knew well.

    Chapter 2

    ‘YOU DON’T BELONG’

I stop just under the trees from the graveyard to hear the birds had taken flight. I looked both ways as I listen for any sign for anyone who follows the same route. Then I kneel down on both knees. In shame, I cried out to the gods above. I let my tears roll as I let the sorrow rise from me. I let my tears hit the ground as it pour from my eyes. I got back up from my tears. I gave out to pain and grief not just from the lost but my wife who I was surly loosen.

That’s when I smelt it. I thought at first it was some foolish mortal burning their garbage on my land. But it smelt different like something was on fire. All wolves know what fire is. I race to investigate it. I follow my nose as it led me to a two-story handmade log cabin. It was engulf with flames and black smoke. The blazing glow as it filled the nightly sky. The burning streams of wood as it crackle under the pressure. I could hear the explosion from inside shattering like glass. Why would any mortal wanted to destroy their home is beyond me?

I stare at it seemed a long time. I turn away from the fire to continue my journey. In mid-step, when I arched my ears to heard a fate of a moaning sound. It was coming from somewhere inside the burning mess. My instinct was to leave, let the mortal inside be found. But something in the air caught my nose’s attention. Sniffing the air to be led in the far corner of the house’s side was a tank. I heard of mortals use that to help to keep warm. But my nose was never wrong. It was like a time bomb is ticking away as the sparks flying in the air that seemed to be getting closer in direction of the tank. If my collation was right it would mean the mortal inside be dead within minutes give or take. I had to do something. In the mortal world, some mortals save lives and get rewarded for it. Me, our society never rewarded such events. More or less I was left with decision on helping the mortal inside or not. I had made a decision. The tracks lead me to the mortal’s moans down as I race inside. Sniffing the ground to find the exact place. I felt the heat scorching my fur as I made my way through the destruction. Flames were everywhere. The smoke was engulfing the flames. I couldn’t see much less track anything or anyone down. I took my steps at ease not much telling what I’ll fine. Tracking the scent. I pray to our gods to let the mortal live long enough for me to find them. I found nothing but smoke and ashes that surrounded me. I heard the moan again. It sounded like it was coming from above me. I raced through the burning home in search of the victim. I follow the fallen stairs upward. I pray I make it in time. I know mortals don’t trust us when it comes to this rescue business. Well, it’s no picnic when it comes down to it. Mortals are like fragile and skittish rabbits in sheep clothing. I never understood their behavior when it comes to down to it. I risk my own life to free some foolish mortal.

I follow the sound as if they were struggling to get up. Don’t they realize to stay down? Even a wolf knows it. Using my canine ears to hear them clearer. They were in the next-door down. I follow in pursuit as I found the door jammed when I ran into the door. I couldn’t change into my form until the moon goes down. I waited at the door as I sat down. What to do? Yes, of course it should work. I whine at the door. Come on. I did it louder. I raised my ear to the door enough to hear them coming closer. Come on, move it. I cried out to them. No one knows what wolves have moon magic. I closed my eyes focusing on them inside. Concentrated on their minds. Fixing onto their mind. Letting their mind connect. It was getting harder to concentrate when everything is smothering you. Sweats sliding down my forehead as I control my magic. My magic whispers out to them inside. ‘I’m here to help. Don’t be frightened. Crawl toward the door. Open it slowly. I’ll do the rest.’ Spoke very calm and hoping the belief of mind power would make it easier for them. At same exact moment, I heard the door opening. I blinked my eyes open only to see they fell face down. I sniff around them. Without the proper care they surely perish. I had to do something before we both go up. I kneel down and sniff around to check where I could grip my teeth. I don’t want to damage them. I found the back of the some kind of cloth between my teeth as I drag them to safety. I moved as quickly as I could drag them. I heard the steps below ready to break if I pull their weight and mind on it. I looked around to see what I could use to get us down. I saw was look like of some kind of metal with wheels. I went for it. I pull them close to the edge and knocking the thing down for them to get in. It was obvious too little for both of us. I out weight them. I use our link minds again. ‘Is there another way out beside the stairs?’ They motion little under me. I listen as they spoke freely. Use the window outside the room. I wonder
