AT A GLANCE
CHAPTER ONE
This story is about a little girl with a story to tell. She was born in the South, later venturing North. Little did she know that someday she would be writing a story such as this.
Sherri’s life was not going to be an easy one, there would be many challenges, tests, and trials throughout the course of her life. From, the loss of a sibling to an early death, and she herself being hospitalized, for Polio and by the miracle of God, she made it through without any major or visible signs to speak of. To and through, transitional situations and circumstances around her.
Having to leave familiar dwellings at the home of her Paternal grandmother and going to live with another side of the family, her Maternal grandparents, and her Paternal grandmother as well. For a while, Sherri lived with her parents and Paternal grandmother, and when her Paternal grandmother became sick, she was relocated to the farm of her Maternal grandparents, along with her paternal grandmother well. In which, they all live in the house together for a few years. Sherri’s parents had moved North to Philadelphia, PA and of course, Sherri would come to realize later on that she too, would be relocating to Philadelphia, PA, with her parents and later her paternal grandmother. It was an unusual living arrangement. However, them (Paternal and Maternal) being friends, it all worked out quite well, because her mom and dad had now moved North, and later Sherri would be joining them at lease for a visit.
Sherri loved the Country, and living with her parents for a while, and grandparents, but she did not like the City. Nevertheless, little did any of them realized, was the fact you see, that God
had a purpose
to unfold.
Often times we don’t realize the effects that our lives will have on others, either positively or negatively. We are vessels of information and there is a story to be told by the things that we do or say.
And, when they had relocated down to the farm with the Maternal grandparents, her Paternal grandmother became worst. She had developed what appeared to be asthma, suffered greatly from time to time. However, she had some good days and bad. However, at one point, her Paternal grandmother needed to be hospitalized. She was send to a hospital quite a ways from where they lived and for a long period of time. And, even though, Sherri was there with the other grandparents, cousins and such, it was not going to be easy. Sherri would suffer much in some way or other. Sometimes, kids can be cruel and boy she was the one who was going to bear the brunt of their cruelty. Living with her immediate cousins were not so bad, but when the distant cousins came . . . and that, is when the problem really began.
Not only did Sherri have to give up the room in which she and her brother slept with their Paternal grandmom, until he was taken North, but she had to move in the other side of the house and share a bed with a younger distant cousin and her baby boy, because they had moved in for a while. The older of her sons stayed in the room that Sherri had originally share with her Paternal grandmother before she was hospitalized for a period of several months, before her returning back home. However, before this could happen Sherri would bear the brunt of a prank, and sprained ankle, because of her rough-neck boy cousins and nearly causing a fire in the home of her Maternal grandparents.
Sherri was a quiet kid and that didn’t go over to well. She had a little weight on her, but by the time her Paternal grandmother came home from the hospital she had lost so much weight that it showed badly on her face.
Perhaps, the fact that she felt unaccepted or left out with her cousins, she took it out on herself. She had really missed her Paternal grandmother and it showed, as well. But the fact that she was near raped at the age of eight by one of the older cousin, when she was left in the house alone, certainly didn’t help at all.
The family were farmers, many crops, those owned by them. And thank God, on this day they were just across the road in one of the fields when this incident occurred. In the big room of the house or what most would call the sitting room,
where she shared the bed with this distant cousin’s mother and little brother, was a semi-large heater that warmed that side of the house. Even though there was a fire place the heater was connected so the smoke could escape out through the chimney. And on this particular day, for some reason, Sherri seemingly put the wrong wood in the heater, unknowingly she place the starter wood
in the heater instead of the other, which was used to keep the fire consistent. This of course, caused the fire in the heater to enter into an almost blaze with sparks shooting out through the chimney and could have very easily cause the home to catch on fire and to be destroyed. For some reason, when she did that, it cause the family to come running and therefore stopped the cousin from attacking her. She was just a kid, but it didn’t matter to him. Thank God, they were not in one of other fields working or they would have not made it in time.
THE BIG MOVE. Finally, the day had come when Sherri would now have her experience with traveling. She and her Paternal grandmother would be taking a trip to the North, where she would be seeing her brother and little sister after a long while. When her mother left the South, and reunited with their father, who had gone first to Philadelphia, PA, the siblings went with her leaving Sherri behind with the grandparents. And now, they were going to be together again. What Sherri didn’t know at the time was that she was going to be staying even after her Paternal grandmother came back home, to the South.
Sherri was not happy about being left with the family there but was willing to make the best of it . . . because she was with her parents and siblings, even though, they themselves, (sibling) were not to happy about her being there. Granted it was not an easy set up, space was limited and finally they moved to a little larger place. Yet, there was still a degree of tention. Why? Sherri didn’t know. Yet, Sherri survived. While in school there, she met a girl and they became friends and that friendship, lasted all through school, she was a real blessing and the sister Sherri needed. Because for some reason or another, Marge, Sherri’s younger sister and now only sister didn’t like her very much, for whatever reason, and still remain, unknown until this day.
THE MEETING. Now, an eleven and a half year old girl. The incident, or prompting, from which this all came about, coming from a seemingly large family and not much money, but holding on just the same, they were in need of help. The family had experienced a form of crisis with the sickness of one of the younger members of the family and having no money to speak of for medical services.
The young child’s father had gone to the Pharmacy, near where they lived, and explained the situation and the circumstances for which he needed assistance. He explained that the little one (not even two years old) was in need of medical attention.
Well, upon hearing this, the neighborhood Pharmacist recommended one of the physicians that worked upstairs over the store, Pharmacy. When the father heard this, as soon as he could he made himself known to this young physician, Dr. Burnstein, and explained the situation to him. The Doctor agreed to come to the house and administer medical care to the little boy.
THE VISIT. This young girl, Sherri, was a student in a nearby school, approximately five minutes away from home. She was informed of the Doctor’s impending visit and was asked by her mother if she would remain at home that afternoon from school to assist, if needed, when the Doctor came. So Sherri did as requested by her mother, neither of them knowing that this was a part of God’s great plan, and that it was all in his hands.
Shortly after midday, this handsome, tall, distinguished gentleman entered the home and announced that he was the doctor that the Pharmacist had sent, and introduced himself as Dr. Burnstein.
Sherri’s mother then introduced herself to this Dr. Burnstein. She was a shy person, especially where strangers were concerned, regardless of their purpose of being in her presence, or her in theirs. She was always the same.
However, they had begun to talk about the problem with the boy who was sick. When Sherri had completed her change out of her school clothes she entered the room where they were, at which time she was introduced to the doctor. The doctor, somewhat startled or bewildered, introduced himself and questioned her age and that of the other members of the family.
The expression, on his face however, remained questionable; what he saw or felt at that time, he did not reveal. He then continued the examination of the little baby brother. Afterwards, he wrote a prescription and instructed the mother. From that day, there weren’t any more home visits; all the treatments were at the office upstairs, on the second floor, over the Pharmacy.
The family moved to another area not long after and Sherri went South
