This book was divinely inspired. I give all the honor and glory to God who is the head of my life.
I am especially appreciative of my third grade teacher, Mrs. Beauty Moore, who recognized that I was not performing at my best and did something about it. Because of her intervention, I learned an important lesson that has had a profound impact on my life. Since then, there have been many other teachers to take a similar interest in me being my best. I am grateful for them touching my life as well: Mrs. Josephine Kennedy (deceased), Mrs. Elsie Keyes, Mrs. Nettie Ryan, Dr. Robert Screen, Dr. Bettye Webster (deceased), Dr. G. Albyn Davis, Dr. Daniel S. Beasley, and Dr. Peg Williams.
I am also grateful for the many students, friends, colleagues, and business clients who provided me with the opportunity to learn from our experiences together, many of whom contributed to the key concepts in this book.
There is no task too great or small that can be completed independently. Be Your B.E.S.T.
is the result of the encouragement and feedback of many.
• To Clayton, my husband, who I refer to as my B.E.S.T. buddy and B.E.S.T. man, for his love, support, reminders that kept me on task, and feedback.
• To my extended family for their love and kind gestures of support—Vernanchell Thompson, Keturah Watson, Marian Rivers, and Lucius Black Jr.
• To my adopted brother, Tom Cruse, for his words of encouragement throughout the writing process and editorial feedback.
• To my dear friends and business colleagues—Anne Baird-Bridges, who sat on the beach with me and encouraged me as I developed my book outline; Kathryn Littleton, who I learned the value of analogies and stories and incorporated them into the book format; Celeste Payne, who designed the book cover; Dr. Margaret Roberts (my mentor), who listened, provided guidance, and shared timely advice; Dr. Canise Bean, who provided moments of celebration and lifted my spirit; Audrey Terry, who always checked on me; Karla Smith Fuller, who unselfishly took the time to share; Somers Martin, who supported and helped keep the OMG business projects moving; Nancy Paul, who provided suggestions about how to document my writing experience.
• To my reviewers for taking their personal time to read, share feedback, and provide editorial suggestions—Mechelle Harmon, Shannon Whitfield, and Michael Gordon.
Introduction
You have a purpose for being here. You have been given an assignment that is just for you and special gifts to complete it. However, you do not know the amount of time that you have been allotted to complete your assignment. You are in charge of making it happen and have been given the freedom to choose how you will get it done. So what do you do? How do you make sure you use your gifts and time in a way that will facilitate you completing your assignment? What if you haven’t identified your gifts? How do you know when you have made the right choices?
Over the past thirty years, fueled by my passion for results and my work in a variety of workplaces with diverse groups of people, these questions have been asked of me. In the process of assisting others, I have made an important discovery. My discovery is the focus of this book.
When you are being your B.E.S.T.,
you are able to identify your assignment, develop and use your gifts, make appropriate use of your time and resources, determine the actions you should take, and achieve your desired results. In other words, to complete your assignment on time using what you have been given requires that you be your B.E.S.T.
Being Your B.E.S.T.
is about you. No one else can define your B.E.S.T. for you. When you resign your B.E.S.T. to others, you allow them to make choices for you and/or influence your choices. This can result in you doing things that prohibit you from discovering your B.E.S.T., staying in relationships or choosing relationships that prevent you from being your B.E.S.T., obtaining results that are not your B.E.S.T. As you read Be Your B.E.S.T.,
you will make many discoveries about yourself and the actions that you must take to assist you in making choices that will lead you to your B.E.S.T.
Be Your B.E.S.T. is designed with you in mind. Since we all have stories, I have chosen to tell my story
as the vehicle for introducing you to what it means to be your B.E.S.T.
Activities associated with my story have been created to connect you with the information from a practical perspective. You can only be your B.E.S.T.
if you use the information to expand on how you view yourself and others. Throughout the book, analogies are used to emphasize key concepts, some of which you will find familiar. These concepts are at the heart of being your B.E.S.T.
In each chapter, you will find Something to Think About.
Questions are raised to stimulate your thinking about how the information presented relates to you. If you are willing to be open, I am certain that you will make some new discoveries about yourself.
Be
means that you must act. This book is my call to action. It is your guide to self-discoveries that will propel you to "be your B.E.S.T." B.E.S.T. is not a destination, but rather a journey that will lead you to complete your assignment and achieve your desired results.
Here are some additional actions that I encourage you to take. Visit www.OmgGetsResults.com and review my responses to some of the questions raised in the book. Share your story in our Be Your B.E.S.T. Story Bank; tell us about the times when you were being your B.E.S.T.

Good Enough
Beware of good enough,
It isn’t made of sterling stuff;
It’s something any person can do,
It marks the many from the few.
It has no merit to
