After high school (Lincoln – class of Spring “54”) he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a radio operator, journalist, photographer, and broadcaster. He retired after 22 years and returned home to San Francisco in November of 1976. He then worked as a purchasing agent in private industry, but missed the camaraderie of the military world. Athena - Spirit Davis

    FORWARD

First, at one time I did indeed practice astrology and metaphysics in the San Francisco Bay Area. These days I do it mostly for friends and relatives.

During my senior year in high school, I had a dream that showed me enlisting in the United States Air Force. After technical training, I was to be assigned in Japan, my first permanent assignment. As it turned out, that is just what happened, I was in fact, assigned to Ashiya Air Base on the southern island of Kyushu, Japan in 1955. It was there I met and fell in love with a Japanese girl named Buchi. We discovered through the town psychic Me-san that we had actually been married before in Japan in a previous lifetime.

Me-san, pronounced May-san means eye. The villagers gave her that name because they believed she could see everything. She awakened me to the world of metaphysics. I am not sure if there was a word for it in those days or not, but for the next three years, she would push me to reach my full potential, or enlightenment, as it were. Through the medium of hypnosis, she unlocked many secrets that I still find amazing to this day. Before she crossed over to the spiritual plane, she said I would go to another country and study, among other things, astrology. I did not understand what she meant until 1961. That is where this story begins.

Although this story does have some actual events in it, there is also some fantasy. As you read you may spot those parts that you believe to be sheer fantasy, then again you could be wrong. It will be up to the individual to discern which is which. For some people what appears to be factual is really fantasy, and for others fantasy is close to, if not, the truth. The fun comes in with trying to figure out which is which. So, read on, and have fun!

    CHAPTER 1

    Madam Logos

In 1961, I was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in northern California. It was during that time that I received orders reassigning me to RAF (Royal Air Force) Sculthorpe in Norfolk County, England. I had been trying to get back to Japan to take care of some unfinished business, so in some ways this was a setback.

Three months after I arrived in England, three of my friends and I left the base for the weekend. We were headed for Great Yarmouth, on the east coast; a resort town then, and I imagine it still is.

While the other three were sunning themselves on the beach, I spent the afternoon walking along the storefronts. When I came to the far end of the street opposite the beach, I was drawn to one particular little shop. On the window was painted, Madam Logos, Fortune Teller—Astrologer— Psychic. In the bottom right hand corner of the same window was the name Athena Logos, License number 11A57884. I opened the door and a small bell suspended above the door began to ring. The sound was soft and pleasant, but my attention was diverted by burning incense on a small table at the rear of the room. Tapestries were hanging on the other three walls. A small elderly woman stepped out from behind the rug opposite me. When she first spotted me she seemed shocked, but it only lasted a second or two and I thought nothing more about it. I figured she did not hear the bell and my standing there startled her.

Had I been casting a movie and needed someone to play the part of a matriarch of a gypsy band, it would have been her. she was short, about five feet even, with long silver hair that went down past her waist, a little bit of a hippy. Her face had many wrinkles, and from their tracings I sensed she laughed a lot when younger, yet because of the wrinkles in her forehead I assumed she either frowned a lot or was a deep thinker. Her lips were full, her nose was small and pointed, and her eyes were huge and green. She was wearing a deep maroon, long sleeved velvet sweater and a skirt with so many colors and designs in it that it almost gave me vertigo to look at it. Around her head, she wore a sheer multicolored scarf and a silver chain with all sorts of astrological symbols on it. Around her neck were numerous silver chains, and on each wrist were several silver bracelets. On her right index finger was a ring of two silver fish swimming in opposite directions and on her left ring finger there was a silver crab.

As she moved closer, her eyes never left mine. She outstretched her hand with her palm up and her fingers pointing down, motioning for me to be seated. When she spoke, I couldn’t help but notice the incredible softness in her eyes. How may I help you? Her voice was soft and her speech, deliberate.

I’m not sure. I guess I want my fortune told.

I sat down. In front of me was a circular table approximately three feet in circumference and on the table was a black velvet tablecloth, and as you might guess, a crystal ball held by three silver dolphins.

But of course. How should I do this? Do you want me read your palm, through the stars, or—

I cut her off. Through the stars, I’ve had this interest in astrology lately and I’d like to see firsthand how it works.

Very well, but first may I look at your right hand?

Uh, sure. I shrugged. Why not? I held out my hand as my heart started beating faster. When she took my hand, I felt a warm sensation shoot up the length of my arm.

She asked. Tell me, do you have a twin? She squinted.

No. No I don’t. Strange question.

Hmmmm, I see. She let go of my hand and I could feel the warmth leaving. I didn’t say anything, but I couldn’t help wonder just what was going on. Without flinching, she said, What is your name?

    Ahhh, its Spirit, Spirit Davis.

She looked up momentarily with a look of, you are kidding, right?

I know, I know. I come in here looking to have my fortune told or to learn something about astrology and my name seems a little weird. My dad had his reasons for naming me what he did, but why he named me Spirit shouldn’t make any difference.

She didn’t acknowledge what I had said, just looked back down and continued, What is your birth date?

    June 30th, 1936.

    Where were you born?

In Seattle, that’s in Washington State in the U.S.

    And the time?

I was born at 3:29 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

I’m surprised you knew that. Most people do not know their birth time.

Well, as I said, I feel drawn to this astrology thing and I read in a book that in order to construct an accurate chart you need an accurate birth time.

    That is correct.

After I read that I sent for a copy of my birth certificate so I’d know what it was.

She took out a sheet of paper along with a couple of books that looked confusing. I asked, What are you doing?

You will see in a few minutes.

I sat quietly until she finished, roughly ten minutes or so. When she finished she pulled out another piece of paper that had a circular diagram on it divided into twelve sections. From her notations, she started filling in the chart with what turned out to be the planets and where they were at the time of my birth. She sat there for a couple of minutes, and then slowly lifted her eyes while nodding. As she did, she reached out with both her hands and grasped mine.

My son, you will have to be very careful with the power you possess. That power should be used only for good, which I tend to think you will do, but you could also be the Devil himself.

I know I must have looked as white as a ghost. I … don’t think I understand what you mean.

Oh yes you do. You’ve known since you were a child that you were different from the others. You still feel it, and your powers are going to become stronger and stronger.

    My powers?

Don’t play games with me, my son. You know very well what I am talking about.

I guess … you mean my visions. Is that it?

Yes, partly, tell me about them.

I pulled my hands back, sitting up straight in the chair. Not much to tell, really. Ever since I can remember, I’ve had dreams that come true. Some of them are about death.

Yes, yes. Does that bother you?

I’ve learned to live with them. I used to tell my mother about them when I was younger because they were so real it was like being there. They used to shake me up quite a bit.

She did not believe you, did she?

Well, not at first, but when a couple of people that we knew died exactly as I had described it, she got real uneasy. She told me I was never to talk of my dreams to her or anyone else … ever!

    Did you tell your father?

Uh-huh, but he was hardly ever around. He was in the Merchant Marines and always out at sea.

    What did he tell you?

Not much, only that I should be careful about whom I tell about my dreams and premonitions.

    And premonitions?

Yeah, it’s like I don’t have to be asleep to have these dreams. I mean, it doesn’t have to be at night. I see things during the day as well. It’s like having vivid daydreams.

    Do they bother you?

Not really. I do sorta get upset when someone is lying to me and I know it.

    How do you know it?

I don’t know. I just know. For instance, my roommate was supposed to meet me at a party two nights ago and give me a lift back to the base. He didn’t show up. When I finally got back to the base, I asked him where he was. Why didn’t he come pick me up like he said he would?

    And?

He told me that he ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere and had just gotten back to the base before me. He was lying. I was speaking softly.

You are upset still … are you not?

    A little.

Do you actually know he was lying?

    I sighed. Yes.

    How do you know?

I saw him with a girl and another friend of ours from the base in a vision. They were at another party.

    Are you sure?

At the time I didn’t want to believe it, but I’ve come to respect what I see. To make sure I asked John how the party was that he and Dave had gone too. Dave is my roommate. Anyway, he said the party was great and Dave was a scream as usual.

Did you tell your roommate this?

No, not yet, and I probably won’t either.

    Why not?

I’m not sure what it would prove. Dave is really irresponsible and I should have known better and made other arrangements.

Do you ever get even with people when they lie to you or hurt you?

I don’t like to talk about that.

Talk about what? Have you done something you are not proud of?

It was a long time ago, and I’ve never told anyone about it. Besides I doubt that I really caused it.

    Caused what?

I hesitated and sighed, then started slowly rubbing the crystal ball with my right hand. After a few moments, I said. When I was nine years old a kid two houses down the street took my bike and started riding away. If he wanted to ride it all he had to do was ask, I wouldn’t have minded. Instead he pushed me down and took it without asking.

    What did you do?

Boy was I mad. I shook my head.

    What did you do?

I wished as hard as I could for the front wheel to come off.

    And?

It did! I sat up straight. It scared me pretty bad. I was as shocked as anyone would be and I haven’t done anything like that since. Not because I think I really caused it … it just makes me feel bad thinking like that.

    Did the boy get hurt?

Yeah, he broke his arm in two places. It seemed like he had the cast on forever. Damn! It seems I never have problems with the girls. It’s always the guys.

That is not all that surprising. There are a couple of reasons for that. One of them is that except for Mercury and Jupiter in your chart, all of your planets are in feminine signs.

I started to stand, but sat down quickly. Hey, I’m not that kind of a guy!

That is not what I mean my son. You will identify with the ladies more than the gents, and believe me they will be drawn to you. You do not understand the power you have, and when you do I hope you use it wisely.

I exhaled deeply. Is there anything I should know? I mean you seem to have my whole life right there on that piece of paper, or so you would have me believe. I mean, what’s in store for me?

She glanced down at the chart, then back at me. Do not be surprised if you find yourself learning more about astrology. If you want, I will teach you myself.

I’d like that, but I’m stationed at RAF Sculthorpe near King’s Lynn, and I won’t be able to get here very often.

I understand. I will give you a book before you leave that I want you to read, especially where I have marked the pages. When you think you have digested that material, come back, and we will talk things over. After that we will start on something new.

I shrugged. Sounds good to me, if it’s really no trouble. She smiled and shook her head slowly as I continued, What about my reading? I would like to know what’s in that chart there. I mean that is what I came in here for.

All things will come in good time. I would rather have you study the material I was referring to first so you can understand what it is that I have to tell you. It will make it easier.

But that just makes me more curious, and I don’t know if I can wait. It’s always been hard for me to study when my mind is being occupied with something else.

You will study, and you will comprehend everything. As you read more, you will want to read even more. Your appetite for this knowledge will become insatiable at times, trust me.

Well, I guess. I reached into my pocket and started to count out the two pounds I owed her for her time.

Put your money away. You do not owe me anything.

Are you sure? I mean even though I didn’t get my reading I still feel like I’ve gotten something from you, and your time is valuable, right?

More than you could possibly know but a person such as yourself only appears on extremely rare occasions. When that happens you don’t place a monetary value on something that is so powerful.

I was a little troubled with what she said. You keep using the word power. Why?

I told you, all things in good time. You have patience. Use it now. Trust me as you trusted your friend in Japan.

Jesus! My insides must have turned over again and again. How in the hell did she know that? How … how … how did you know about Me-san? My mind was numb.

I am a psychic, remember? She smiled ever so slightly, which I found to be even more disconcerting.

    Yes, but—

Not now my son. There will be plenty of time to speak of that later. First you have a few things to learn.

I composed myself as best I could. You keep saying, ‘trust me’.

Yes, I know but in trusting me you will be trusting yourself.

I didn’t know what to say. I felt as though I understood everything she had to say, and yet I felt disoriented.

I left her shop with the small book she had given me and returned to the guys on the beach. The book was only one hundred pages long, and about half the size of the common paperback.

As I approached the guys Dave yelled, Hey Spook, find anything unusual?

You could always count on my roommate to say something, and loudly. Dave was okay. As I told the fortuneteller, he was irresponsible, and insecure. Why I wasn’t sure, and I’m not sure I cared that much when you come down to it, but there he was sitting on a deck chair like royalty. He was very athletic and always kept himself in shape. He was muscular with very little fat. One of the other two guys was Pete. Pete was the smallest of the four of us. Like Dave he was muscular but had the appearance of being weak, however, that was due mostly to his unassuming attitude. The other person in the foursome was Rob. He loved to drink beer which accounted for his little pot belly he was starting. He loved to lounge, play cards, and as I said … drink beer. The remaining individual in our group was myself. I’m six foot even, one hundred eighty-six pounds, blond hair with a wave in front and have blue eyes. Not muscular, but not really what you’d call heavy. My only interests are the occult, sports, and photography.

Pete was a shy type like me. He came from San Jose, California, just a few miles south of my parent’s home in San Bruno. Rob was from Tallahassee, Florida. Like Dave, he could be quite loud, but unlike Dave, he was as responsible as Dave was irresponsible. Rob had a slight southern accent and an expression for everything. Most of his expressions only made sense to him. Surprisingly, the four of us got along fairly well despite our differences.

Nah, nothing you guys would be interested in. I had been reading the little book but closed it as I sat down in the sand.

„What‘s that ya got there Spook?"

„Ah, it‘s nothing Rob. Just a small book I found in one of the shops." I saw no reason for hiding it, so I handed it to him.

He thumbed through it quickly. „Mind if I ask you a question, Spook?"

    „No, not at all."

„Why are all the pages blank? Are you starting a diary?"

I thought he was kidding. „Get outta here. You may not agree with what is written there, but you don‘t have to make fun of it."

He shook his head as he handed the book back to me and said, „Well then, read some of it to me. This outta be good."

„Ah, forget it. You‘d only make fun of it anyway."

Pete asked, „Mind if I see it Spirit?" He held his hand out.

„No, I guess not. I handed him the book. „Why do you always call me by my name and not Spook like the others?

„Dunno. Not into nicknames much I guess, why? You want me call you Spook?"

„It really doesn‘t make any different to me. I was just wondering." I smiled.

The talk resumed but it didn‘t seem like much was being said. Dave and Rob were too busy watching and comparing the girls walking by on the beach to hold a substantial conversation anyway. The way they acted you would think the girls were trying to catch their eye. In a couple of cases, it may have been true, however, most of the girls couldn‘t have cared less. While they were busy talking about the girls, Pete handed the book back to me and whispered as he raised his eyebrows, „You know these pages are blank."

When I took back the book I could clearly see the printing on the pages, but I also saw the sincere look on Pete‘s face and not wanting to cause a misunderstanding I said, „Yeah, I know Pete. I just bought this to make a few notes in, Rob gets under my skin sometimes and I react badly."

„Well you didn‘t have to give him the book in the first place. You could have kept it to yourself."

„Who‘re you kidding? He and Dave would have just made a big thing out of that as well. They enjoy making others uncomfortable at times. Especially if they think it‘s going to make them look bigger."

„Don‘t get worked up, it‘s not worth it. No big thing."

I couldn‘t help thinking just what-in-the-hell is going on? Why couldn‘t Rob and Pete see there was writing on the pages and I could? I should have gone back to the fortuneteller right away, but I didn‘t. In any event, it was getting late and we still had to find a bed and breakfast place for the night.

It was later that we finally found a small boarding house about four blocks from the beach and settled in. Rob and Dave were busy getting ready for the evening at one of the local pubs where all the girls were. Pete was going along but didn‘t seem to be as excited. I was a little agitated, although I didn‘t let it show, because it seemed like it was taking them forever to get ready, and I wanted to read that small book. I knew if I pulled it out in front of them, it would start something I‘d just as soon not get into. Finally, a half hour later they were ready to go. As they were leaving my roommate turned and said, „Hey Spook, let‘s go man."

„If you don‘t mind I‘d like to rest a while before I get ready. Besides it‘s early yet."

„Whatever. We‘ll see if we can find you a school teacher or librarian." He laughed as they exited.

Pete turned when he reached the door and asked, „You gonna be alright?"

„Yeah, no problem, I‘m just a little tired." Actually I was, this afternoon had more of a telling affect on me than I realized.

„Okay. I‘ll see you later Spirit."

He left closing the door. When he did, I jumped for my bag and got out the little book. The front and back covers were plain and the color of a brown paper bag. I couldn‘t wait to get to the contents.

As I opened it and began reading, I felt somewhat warm all over. The beginning of the book was concerned with the different signs, houses, planets, and their meanings. The second half had to do with karma and transformations, something I was very familiar with thanks to my tour in Japan. I read the entire book in about an hour and a half, and was about to begin reading again when I heard a key turning the lock on the door. As I sat up Pete entered the room closing the door behind him. He sat down on his bed dropping his jacket alongside all in one motion. He obviously had had a couple beers.

„You‘re back kinda early aren‘t you Pete?"

„Yeah, I guess. That place was just too damn noisy. All of a sudden I couldn‘t take it anymore and left."

At that moment, the little book slipped from my hand and hit the floor. I reached to pick it up as Pete asked, „You been making any notes in that yet?"

„Well, in a manner of speaking, just making mental notes, so to speak."
