HOW THE BOOK BEGAN
That blob of pinkish-purple molding stuff looks like Blobby,
I said to my granddaughter Lilly who was showing me her jelly-like creation.
Who’s Blobby?
Lilly and my grandson Eli asked at the same time.
She’s someone who started out as a drop of purple rain from a cloud surrounding a spaceship and later turned into a purple girl,
I replied.
Is this true, Grandma?
the two 10-year-olds asked, wide-eyed with wonder.
It’s something I wrote,
I answered vaguely, not explaining that it was a spoof I’d written for my weekly humor column in the local paper.
I want to read that book!
they both exclaimed. I knew then that I had a ready-made audience.
CHAPTER ONE
PERKKO MAKES A QUICK TRIP TO EARTH
Far away on the planet Mars, a teenager named Perkko, with skin and eyes the color of cucumbers, was lounging on his cot in his family’s houseboat. He glanced through the window at all the people fishing, swimming, diving, boating, water-sliding and waterskiing in the goo-aw (artificial Martian water). There’s nothing to do around here!
he moaned to himself.
Perkko craved something more adventurous. He had taken two semesters of Earth History in school and was proud that he could say a few Earth words like groovy
and Bebop-a-Lula.
So even though he wasn’t old enough to have a spacecraft operator‘s license yet, he figured his dad wouldn’t mind if he took a quick trip to Earth in the family’s new faster-than-light spaceship.
