    THE LITTLE RAINBOW DRAGON

O NCE UPON A TIME, A family of dragons lived in a cave on an island with a large volcano. The dragons were interesting because of the way they changed colours. In spring and summer, their scales were green. In autumn, their scales changed to the same autumn colours as the leaves on the trees that grew on the slopes below their cave. When winter brought the cold winds and snow, the dragons became the colour of the winter sky and hibernated in caves. Even the volcano fell silent under the cold grey skies.

New baby dragons were always born in the spring, except for one little dragon that was born during a summer storm when lightning lit up the sky, which turned from light blue to dark blue, indigo, and then purple. He wasn’t green like the other dragons wearing their summer colours; neither was he wearing the dragons’ autumn colours. He was all those colours plus the colours in the sky during the storm.

His mother thought he was the most beautiful dragon in the whole world. His father was sure he would also be a very clever dragon. They were proud of their new baby but knew that other dragons would tease their special little dragon because he was different.

The colourful dragon watched all the bigger dragons playing dragon games, breathing in the hot flames from the volcano then breathing the fire back out of their mouths across the waves when they landed on the beach. Sometimes the colours stayed in the sky, turning the white and grey clouds red, orange and pink until the sun went down.

‘Why am I different from the other dragons?’ the little dragon asked his mother.

‘Because you are special!’ she replied.
