All Quests Start at the Bar
PALLI WAS FEELING FINE as he entered Guffabar. The pleasant taste of the steak he just had lingered on his teeth, and he was in the mood for some beer. It was Tuesday. As days go, Tuesdays are almost as good for drinking as Thursdays.
Palli walked to the bar: barkeep: one beer please.
The barkeep handed him a glass of lager. Palli took a nice, large sip of it, and felt refreshed. He sat down at the usual table and relaxed. Guffabar was a very comfy place, it had sofas. Palli had the whole sofa to himself, because it was Tuesday, and he leaned back and spread out and just enjoyed the slowly advancing alcohol induced numbness as he drank his fourth beer of the evening. The first one he bought at Guffabar though.
Very few people attended the bar on Tuesdays, which is one of the reasons Palli liked going there on Tuesdays. He was waiting for his friend Toggi to arrive. Toggi was also one of those guys who liked to be drunk all the time because there's nothing better to do. The music was turned off, not low, because last weekend the speakers had exploded, and the proprietor had not bothered to have them fixed yet. Palli felt that the silence improved the ambiance. Normally, bars are too loud.
On a near-by table two foreigners were having a conversation, and since there was no music Palli could hear them well, whether he wanted to or not: you're right, Stephen King really is good,
said the one.
Didn't I tell you? There's a reason why he's a best selling author,
said the other.
Yeah, but still, I have already read some of his long books, novels I mean, and I found them all rather boring. But those shorts are amazing.
"I know. Have you read It yet?"
What?
"It."
The man gave a confused look, then it clicked: the one with the clown? Right... no.
Maybe later?
I'll see. It's the size of a refrigerator.
Yeah... many of his books are that size. So you finished the book I gave you?
Not yet, I'm almost done.
Palli downed a shot of Jagermeister just as Toggi arrived, along with two of their mutual friends, Gunni and Dori. The last thing Palli heard clearly of the foreigner's conversation was: Stephen King's shorts are way superior.
It was said with such great emphasis, such confidence and authority, that the sentence wormed itself into Palli's brain, lost from the surface but burrowed into the subconscious. There it curled up, prepared tea and ordered some pizza, just preparing for the right moment to spring into action.
Palli greeted his friends.
Been here long?
asked Toggi when he arrived.
Long enough for one beer and this,
said Palli, showing them the shot glass. I was just enjoying the conversation between those tourists you don't see now because they're gone, and some elderly men who were apparently sexually attracted to field-mice and football players.
What elderly men?
asked Gunni, looking around.
Palli looked around, and didn't see anyone else in the bar: I may have imagined those.
Sounds like you had fun,
said Dori.
Palli nodded. They ordered some shots of tequila, and downed them while chanting the tequila song. They did three or four of those before they started drinking beer again, talking loudly
