    Introduction

    Tukaram lived in the 17th century during the time of Shivaji. He was a prominent Varkari Saint and spiritual poet of the Bhakti or devotion tradition. He was a great devotee of Lord Vithal. Vithal is another name for Lord Vishnu. He wrote many Abhangas or devotional songs in Marathi. He is a household name in Maharashtra. His Abhangas are still recited by people. Through his Abhangas he showed the Bhakti Marg. He made no distinction between castes.

    River Indrayani flows in Maharashtra. On the banks of river Indrayani, there is a village named Dehu. There lived a devotee of Vithal, Vishwambhar Buwa. Vishwambhar Buwa was one of the ancestors of Tukaram’s family. He was a great devote of Vithal. He always sang Bhajans of Vithal, chanted the name of Vithal. He was a kind hearted man.
