    Chapter 1

Fishing for the biggest catch ….   Is always the bet of two retired fishing  buddies Rex Dodger and Phil Willow. They  met working at the car factory back in 1982.  They soon began joking back and forth who  was the better fisherman and bragging over  how big and what they had caught (this is  probably where the old tale of how big the  fish actually were caught started). Within a  year they were fishing together and have  done so for the past 30 years. Rex was a  skinny man with a balding head. Phil was  your average guy with a little extra around  the waist and a head full of hair just starting  to turn gray.

They were on Phil's older red and silver  bass boat at Powerstone Lake, that sits just  a few minutes outside the small town of  Markson, lllinois. Powerstone Lake is a  man-made lake stocked full of all kinds of  good eating fish. You just have to catch  them. Which is the favorite pastime of our  two fishermen. They had been coming to  this particular cove since they found it had

    3

the best luck in catching anything. Today  was no different. With anchors down in  about 10 ft of water and roughly 200 feet  from a fallen elm tree that had fallen many  years prior. The only thing left of the  massive tree were bare limbs than ran a  good distance along the lake bottom. A  great hiding place for catfish and crappie.  Just the kind of fish they were always trying  to catch.

The sun was bright today making the  water shine like a mirror. There was a soft  breeze which helped to not notice the hot  summer heat as much. As long as the fish  were biting, they’d suffer through any type  of weather. The fish had quit biting and the  two had a day it was time to go home. Rex  hauled in the front anchor and set it down,  he looked back at Phil who was struggling  to get his anchor up.

Come on old man! Are you getting too  old for that physical labor? Need me to pull  that anchor in for you? joked Rex

This is really tangled on something. It  won't even budge. You might have to jump  in and untangle it. said Phil with his face  red and sweaty from pulling and twisting  the rope.

"Like hell I will, it's your boat you jump

in and haul it up." Rex snapped back.  Phil tried a few more times but the  anchor would not budge.

I think I'll try to back the boat up or  bring it around. Dam that better work. Said  Phil

Phil moved the throttle to reverse and the  boat slowly went backwards towards the  tree trunk. He kept the boat in reverse and  turned the motor in both directions but  again it would not budge.

Rex hold on I'm going to rev her up.  Shouted Phil

The motor was running full out, humming  loudly and vibrating the two

of them. It was clear it was not going to  budge. Phil was worried so he slowed the  engine back to idle and shut the motor off.

I'll be damned, I've never had this  happen before. I'm going to have to go  down and see what the hell's going on.  Unless you want to swim home that is.

Can't you just cut it off? asked Rex  I could, but I just bought these anchors  and rope. Their brand new. Oh, screw it I'm  going in. Phil said sharply

Phil striped down to his underwear and  socks. He climbed onto the tree limb that  was sticking out of the water beside the  boat. He slowly sat down on the limb. He

had to be very careful. The old tree limbs  could have hooks and lures snagged on it  from many years of lying there. Very slowly  Phil headed under into the warm water. As  he followed the rope down with his right  hand he used his left hand to feel the bare  limbs. He felt a few stings and pinches  which had to be a hook or lure tangled up  at one time. No more leaves after years of  laying underwater the bark was all gone,  only a bare limb was left. He'd been under  water just a short time when all at once he  come flying up out of breath splashing  water every-where.

Spiting and sputtering "Rex you're not  going to believe what has us caught up
