Kathryn Robles
Kathryn writes about her family’s adventures creating an urban farm in the city, even if that means overcoming her black thumb or having chickens taking a dust bath under the trampoline. She never expected to find herself farming in the city, or farming at all, but it turns out she loves it! What’s better is she loves talking about it and sharing what she's learned with others.

You Should Plant a Fruit Tree Guild
Fruit trees are one of the most productive and beneficial things you can grow in your backyard (or front yard!). They produce for years with very little effort on your part. Plus, they give you shade and are beautiful to look at.
One way you can improve the health and productivity of your tree is by planting a fruit tree guild. A guild is essentially companion plants that will benefit your tree in some way.
Think in layers. Your tree is the topmost layer. You can add some shorter fruiting shrubs below it, then a variety of herbs and other beneficial plants surround your tree creating its own mini-ecosystem.
That micro system can help you have unparalleled results in your backyard orchard. It can help you reduce pests without having to spray, attract bees and other pollinators so you don’t have to hand pollinate, and reduce weeds that take up your precious time.
Herbs are some of the most beneficial plants that you can include in your plant guilds. Plus, they often have multiple uses as well!
