“When it comes to fruit, I am passionate about eating and growing as much as possible in its proper season”
When I think of it, Longmeadow is a very fruity place. This was never a deliberate ploy but an assortment of fruits in many and varied forms has slowly assembled so that now, from the first strawberry in May (grown in a terracotta pot in the greenhouse), to the last apple (‘Norfolk Beefing’, which usually clings to the tree until December), there is always fresh, seasonal fruit to enjoy – as well as the blossom that precedes it.
When it comes to fruit, I am passionate about eating and growing as much as possible in its proper season. Gooseberry fool in June, summer pudding in July made from freshly picked blackcurrants and raspberries, strawberries eaten warm from the hot July soil, pears in September, dripping honeysweet on your fingers – you get my drift. Nothing is more delicious than ripe fruit at the right time and place.
