    Will you be done anytime today, Miss?

    Naomi gasped, and turned to find a man scowling at her impatiently. I think the idea of queues is so you can wait your turn, she snapped back.

    Well not all of us want to wait all day, he growled. There was an answering murmur of approval from several people behind the rude man.

    Naomi sighed, and turned back to the counter. It was just her luck that her card had chosen today to not work. She rummaged through her bag, slapping the twenties and tens on the counter, and counting under her breath.

    Back in New Jersey, Naomi had always done her grocery shopping in the evenings after classes, as the Walmart close to her studio apartment on campus had not had so much traffic at that time. She wasn’t used to having a queue shuffling impatiently behind her, and she definitely had never had her card declined before.

    She hadn’t guessed that people in Florida, with all their hustling and bustling, still had time to shop in the afternoon. The store was full, and Naomi didn’t need to look back to know the line behind her was getting longer.

    I’m so sorry about this, she said to the cashier, who had not said one word to her since her card was declined for the third time. The girl – Rika, according to her name tag – couldn’t have been more than sixteen. She had thick brown lashes and frizzy blonde hair which was begging for a trim.  Her orange and yellow t-shirt was frayed, like it had been done on purpose, and now she had resorted to sighing loudly every
