Chapter One

George listened to the shuffling of feet and watched the unfamiliar faces that sat all around him. He had never witnessed a court hearing before, and decided he didn’t care much for it. He could never have imagined that his first time in court would involve watching his wife being tried by a short, bald, and miserable judge.

George closed his eyes, and muttered a short prayer. He felt that his wife was innocent, but the odds were against her, and their lawyer had told him frankly that unless they were able to find an alibi or video evidence exonerating his wife before the second hearing, the scales of justice would remain tilted against them. The lawyer’s plan for the first hearing had been to poke holes in the prosecutor’s arguments to the extent that the case was adjourned.

Court rise, the clerk of the court announced, as the Judge walked into the courtroom. The clerk then read out the cases for the day, beginning with one Margie Lockwood, who was charged with Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated.
