About this ebook

Christian writer, C.S. Lewis once made the point that people tend to either obsess over demons or deny their existence entirely-and the devil is equally pleased either way. The Bible is clear. Our battle is not with flesh and blood but with spiritual forces (Eph. 6:12). At the same time, however, the Bible makes it clear that the evil forces, devils and demons, are powerless in comparison to God. If God is for us, who can be against us? Even the demons shudder in the presence of God (James 2:19).

    Introduction

Spiritual warfare can be a divisive topic. Some people hear about worlds of devils and demons and imagine it little more than a metaphor for general troubles, sufferings, and temptations from a bygone era. The notion of spiritual attack, the name of Satan, and the like is often dismissed with a laugh. Others, however, approach the topic with grave concern, an obsession, and even a fear of evil spiritual forces.

Christian writer, C.S. Lewis once made the point that people tend to either obsess over demons or deny their existence entirely—and the devil is equally pleased either way.

The saints by and large offer us a balanced approach to spiritual warfare. They take seriously the reality of demons and the devil but even more surely do they cling to the victory they have over evil forces on account of Christ. The goal of this prayer book is to encourage such balance in your spiritual life with respect to issues surrounding spiritual warfare. The war is real—but the victory has already been won.

    A Meditation from St. Athanasius

Saint Athanasius of Alexandria—most famous for combatting the Arian heresy—experienced multiple exiles before his perspective ultimately prevailed at the Council of Nicaea. The saint viewed his struggles as more than a battle with earthly powers; he believed that it was
