Prologue
Life had been going as typically as possible. We mostly sat at home, Janice would do housework while Penelope was at kindergarten, and I would mostly sit in my room, which I had turned into a lab. I had been at the top of my Weapons Development class in The Facility, the place that had captured my brother, friends, and me. The Facility turned us into lab rats, conducting illegal experiments on us and others. We were and are the only survivors. I was tortured emotionally and physically by The Facility, as they had viewed me as challenging, rebellious, and dangerous.
One day, we were all sitting at home. The twins and I had decided to go to university, so we were in the middle of our studies. Penelope was home as it was a Saturday, Janice was in the kitchen, and Uncle Sam was working at the bakery; Saturdays were always busy.
I was sitting in my room, procrastinating when it came to homework but still being productive when it came to my experiments and research. The room stunk of boiled eggs and Shepherd’s Pie. My hair was knotty, greasy, and tied back so it wouldn’t interfere with my gadget. There was a stale feel to my room, so I opened the small window on the side of my abode.
As I gasped for fresh air, I tried to work out the complexities of creating a new weapon for myself. Since Grace’s death, my nightmares had increased, and I hallucinated more often than usual. My latest nightmare consisted of me standing at Grace’s grave when all of a sudden, she broke through the earth and grabbed me, her insides spilling out of her stomach and pressed against me. You-should’ve-saved me.
Long story short, I felt vulnerable.
Suddenly, I heard a kerfuffle outside; I paused my research and listened harder. The slam of car doors penetrated my concentration, along with excited chatter and the sound of camera shutters. Hang on, camera shutters?
Chapter 1
Finally, putting two-and-two together, I peeked out of the window; the scene below me confirmed my suspicions. Dozens and dozens of reporters lay in wait outside, their motives unclear. Just as I was about to storm out and demand an explanation, Janice stopped me, already interpreting what I planned to do. Before you go, look at this,
she said. She led me by the hand to the lounge. When I entered the lounge, I spotted live news coverage of a house, Hang on a second,
I began, That’s our house!
Those nosy reporters were recording our house! A voiceover started on screen, "Anonymous sources have shared fascinating information about this family. Some were subject to illegal experiments that the government had ordered destroyed. To find out more about their story, please go to our website..." I stared at the screen in shock; someone had leaked our story, our adventures, our downfalls, and uprisings, shown to the world, no longer private to our minds. So, in my fury, I stamped my way to the door and threw it open to reveal a swarm of reporters.
When I reached the driveway, my brain reminded me of the many times the Facility Agents had pounced on me, as the reporters had done. Luckily, I collected myself before lapsing into a panic attack. The reporters flung questions at me left and right. What exactly happened at the Facility?
One asked,
Are you a danger to society?
At that, I couldn’t stop myself from letting out a sound of exasperation, "Who else
