Prologue
In a suburban city somewhere in New York, a young girl named Ana lay in her bed, drifting between being asleep and awake, when the smooth engine of a car pulling up jolted her out of her dreamlike state. She woke up fully, wondering what had awakened her when Ana heard the tires’ slight screech on the road. Ana flicked her covers off and stood on the carpet, Ana’s lithe body lifting off the bed as she stood. Ana then peered through the curtains and squinted into the inky darkness; luckily, all she saw was a black car parked on the other side of the street. She had no idea why it was there, but that mystery didn’t occur to her in her tired state, so she returned to her bed and fell sound asleep.
Chapter 1
That morning before school, Ana’s older brother Liam and her Mum were watching the news. Her almost step-dad seemed to be occupied in the kitchen, making breakfast. Ana walked over to the tv, which had encapsulated her mother and brother; there were reports of a kidnapping that occurred just last night on their street! Ana then turned away from the TV to receive her breakfast. Once she had, she grabbed her backpack and piled into the car alongside her brother.
When they got in the car, Ana’s Mother Janice seemed slightly on edge from the news report, but she acted as if nothing had happened. Hey, Ana,
Liam began,
Yeah, Liam?
Look at this,
he moved over to her side and showed her a picture on his phone,
Oh!
Ana gasped, It’s Pumpkin!
Pumpkin was Liam’s best friend’s pet pig, who reportedly was obsessed with pumpkin. Yeah,
he chuckled.
Liam, don’t forget to hand your phone into the office when we arrive and pick it up at Lunchtime when I pick you up for your dentist appointment,
Yeah, yeah,
he replied.
When they arrived at school, Liam had to peel away from Ana, Have fun with your girlfriend!
Ana cried mockingly. She’s not my girlfriend!
Liam called back, but he didn’t mind.
Hey, Ana?!
A voice called from behind her; Ana stopped and rolled her eyes, then slowly turned around. It was the primary school bully Crai Garcia, three years older than she was. He had a side-swept fringe with blonde colouring; his body was well built, yet his legs were short, making him shorter but not smaller than most boys his age. Hi Crai,
her tone of voice was mildly exasperated. Hey, I just saw your dorky brother, your little bodyguard, eh?
Ana glared at him, then her face lit up, What’s this about a dorky brother?
Crai turned around, his eyes worried, H-hi Liam,
Garcia,
Liam bent closer to him, his frame towering above Crai’s. You better leave my sister alone and get your sorry little behind back to class,
Crai chuckled breathlessly, then turned to Ana, This ain’t over, Brungon,
Crai yelled, but he retreated away to his classroom, sneaking one last dirty look at Ana. You, okay?
Liam asked, turning to Ana,
Yeah,
she replied,
Okay, get to class, and be careful of Crai!
Ana nodded and hurried into Classroom Five, where Crai was awaiting her.
Once she was in the big children’s classroom, she realised that the whole place was complete and utter chaos. Someone threw a marble race track; a paper plane whizzed close by her head. Ana then tried to wade through piles and piles of exercise books. Ana spotted Crai and his posse at the back of the classroom, so she half-swam, half-ran to her desk, and awaited her teacher’s coming.
Silencio!
A voice yelled from the doorway; Ana smiled; it was her Year 4 History and Spanish teacher; Ana was officially Year Two but joined the Year Fours for all her subjects, including PE. The principal had held Crai back a year. Ana loved Spanish and was intrigued by learning a new language; French was next on her list. Once the class had hushed, her teacher spoke again, I leave for five minutes, and what do I find?
There was no answer, The class in shambles, and the youngest among you is a picture of perfection!
Her strong accent emphasised the ‘p’s as many heads bowed in shame, Grow up!
