Ihad just wrestled up the second-story window after a lifetime of effort when I heard the wail of a siren in the distance. At first I thought it was part of the shrieking protest of the pane itself. It was only a short burst of sound, easily covered by the screech of the window.
But in the silence of the dark night, when the window was finally raised and only my trembling arm and leg muscles were still protesting, I heard Nana and Patty frantically calling to me from the black pit below.
Molly! Quick! Close it and get down!
