My first exposure to out-of-this-world beautiful fabric
was at a quilt show, where I found pieces of fabric hand
painted by Mickey Lawler. I treasured the pieces that I
bought, and Mickey continues to be my painting hero. For
anyone wanting to paint stormy, bold landscape fabrics,
I strongly recommend Mickey Lawler’s Skydyes (C&T
Publishing, available as an ebook; see Resources, page 78)
and Mickey Lawler’s SkyQuilts (C&T Publishing).
My next exposure to hand-painted fabric was soft, dreamy
pieces painted by Jennifer Priestley. Years later, in 2002,
Jennifer and I coauthored my first book that included
painting, The Basic Guide to Dyeing and Painting Fabrics
(Krause Publications, out of print).
My painting experience started simply by experimenting.
But over the years, I became more knowledgeable after
reading and researching information from paint and
brush manufacturers. I thank these companies for gener-
ously sharing their vast knowledge. I especially appreciate
the staff and management of Jacquard Products, Liquitex
Artist Materials, and FM Brush Company, Inc.
I thank the students who have taken my painting work-
shops over the past ten years. I often learn from their
creativity and spontaneity. Their love and appreciation of
my workshops helped inspire me to write this book.
Most important, I thank my friends and family, who
endured endless months of me being too busy
