    Jim gets into gardening

Jim was growing fast but he was also getting very fussy about his food. He didn't like this, and he didn't like that. Emily ate everything that was put in front of her but not Jim - especially veggies. Tub didn't mind as he ate everything and was lucky enough to get scrapes while the kelpies further away from the house didn’t.

‘You are getting very fat.’ the ponies told him.

‘No, I’m not!’ said Tub, but he was.

Jim’s Mum tried all sorts of things to get Jim to eat better but nothing seemed to help. His Dad told him he wouldn't make a Jackaroo or be able to do very tough work when he was older, but nothing seemed to help.

Then the children’s Granny came to stay. She was a little shocked by Jim’s fussiness and decided to take the matter in hand, especially with the fruit and veggies. There had always been a veggie patch and fruit trees, but they weren't always looked after very well as there were always more important things to do.

‘Come on children, I need your help.’ said Granny, the second day of her stay. ‘Can’t we go for a ride instead?’ said Jim. ‘There is something I want to show you out at the swimming hole.’

‘Later, after you’ve helped me.’ said Granny.

Boring, thought Jim but he didn't dare say so and anyway he loved his Granny to bits, so he was happy to help really.

‘First, we are going to clear the weeds off the veggie patch and dig the ground over and plant some fresh things. What do you like Jim?’

    ‘Not much.’ said Jim.

‘What about you Emily?’ said Granny.

‘I like most things, carrots, beans, peas, sweetcorn, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, squash, capsicum, zucchini, lettuce,’ Emily was ticking them off on her fingers as she spoke them out loud. ‘Oh yes and cabbage and broccoli and cauliflower…’

‘Goodness, I don’t think we can plant all of them just now but as many as we can.’ said Granny.

So, they started clearing the weeds off, rather Granny and Emily did, and Jim just watched until Granny asked him if he was tired maybe he should go to bed. Jim didn't like the sound of that, so he joined in. Then Tub thought it looked like fun, so he tore round and round the veggie patch and then started digging like mad sending clouds of dirt in all directions. It made everyone laugh and suddenly Jim felt it WAS rather fun after all. So, they all got stuck into it and by morning tea they were ready to plant a few things in the smallish area they had got cleared and dug.

‘What do you think we should plant first Jim?’ said Granny.

‘Don’t know but I supposed peas would be good, Emily likes them.’ said Jim. So, they planted peas and carrots and sweetcorn. there was just enough room to plant a few squash seeds too.

‘Tomorrow we will plant some more things.’ said Granny.

After lunch they then did as Jim wanted and rode over to the swimming hole. As they were now in winter it wasn't really warm enough to swim but the children paddled, and Jim showed Granny a tiny birds nest he had found. Tub came too but got very puffed and Trixie and Bub teased him for being so fat. He didn't really care though as he liked his food and his coat shone with good health.

The next day they did some more weeding and planting. Jim found it great fun after all. He was out in the fresh air with people he loved and also found it very satisfying to tidy everything up and make it look better. The children’s Mum and Dad came to look and were very impressed. Jim got the hosepipe and watered the ground gently, so he didn't wash the seeds out.

A few days later Jim came rushing into the kitchen at breakfast time in great excitement.

‘Come and see everyone!’ he shouted. ‘The first seeds are up!’

From then on Jim was out in the garden every day, weeding, watering and caring for the little plants which seemed to grow at an amazing speed. He loved it. Soon it was time to harvest some of the first planting, so Emily got a basket from the kitchen, and they picked peas and carrots.

‘Now Jim,’ said Granny. ‘Are you going to try a few peas and carrots?’

‘I don’t like them, yuk.’ said Jim.

‘Well at least try them, you grew them, so you ought to see what they taste like.’ said Granny. ‘Anyway, they are so fresh they will taste wonderful.’

Jim was very reluctant but finally agreed as he didn't want to let his Granny down. So, he nibbled on a washed carrot then tried some peas.

‘Wow,’ he said. ‘They taste wonderful.’

‘I told you so,’ everyone cheered.

So, Jim started to eat some veggies then his Mum and Granny got him to help make some veggie soup with some of the things he wasn’t too keen on, and he found he liked cooking too as well as gardening and then started to eat
