sat beside my father in
the same pew every Sunday at the Methodist Church in our small Pennsylvania town. From that particular pew, we could better see my mother, the organist, tucked deep inside the organ pit hidden from most of the congregation, except for the top of her head. Everything about church, other than my mother’s music, bored me. To keep me from fidgeting when I was small, my father would give me his church program to draw on during the service. Over time people around us began donating their programs to his mission to keep me still. After church I would show my drawings to Mr. Austin, the head usher,
