Freddie Ramos and the Meteorite - Jacqueline Jules

    1. A Rock from Outer Space

On Sunday night, Mr. Vaslov came to dinner. He takes care of Starwood Park, where I live, and he’s my friend. He’s also friends with my mom and her boyfriend, David. Mr. Vaslov and David both like scientific stuff, especially drones. They did a lot of talking over a roasted chicken.

I don’t mind sitting around a table with grown-ups, as long as I get ice cream for dessert. But that night, I needed to talk to Mr. Vaslov in private. So I asked Mom if I could walk Mr. Vaslov home. My plan didn’t quite work.

Buena idea, Mom said. It’s a pretty night. Let’s all go.

Outside my apartment, 29G, Mr. Vaslov got on his red electric scooter—the one he uses to get around Starwood Park because he has bad knees. Mom and David walked on one side of Mr. Vaslov while I walked on the other. No one said much until we saw a ball of fire streak through the night sky.

    Look! Mr. Vaslov shouted.

We stayed still, our eyes up, watching the bright light speed down toward Earth. The light disappeared just beyond Starwood Park, near my school, Starwood Elementary.
