About this ebook

Marina Ocypete is a harpy, a Remnant of the Greek myth living in a small town in the Colorado Territory. She would rather start a decent fight than sit around idle. The local sheriff offers her a job as a deputy which seems like a better choice than suffering from boredom, but Reed Brant has a way of getting under her skin.

Michelle Boule

Michelle Boule has been, at various times, a librarian, a bookstore clerk, an administrative assistant, a wife, a mother, a writer, and a dreamer trying to change the world. Michelle writes the historical fantasy series Turning Creek. She is married to a rocket scientist and has two small boys. She brews her own beer, will read almost anything in book form, loves to cook, bake, go camping, and believes Joss Whedon is a genius. She dislikes steamed zucchini, snow skiing, and running. Unless there are zombies. She would run if there were zombies.

    Colorado Territory, 1860

Marina was bored. She was bored, and, for once, she wanted to do something other than playing cards and drinking. She needed another form of entertainment this morning. She had no real reason to go visit Petra, but she had nothing better to do, and she knew Petra would put her to work.

The flight to Petra's alone was enough to begin to calm her. The summer wind was full of the smell of grass, pine, and flowers as Marina soared high above the peaks of the Turning Creek valley. There were few things she loved more than flying. The sky was so blue it hurt to look at it, but Marina could not peel her eyes away until the ground was only feet away from her talons. She landed with a graceful hop on her harpy talons and changed back into her mortal form in the open area between the buildings of James and Petra’s dairy farm.

Marina Ocypete was one of the three Remnant harpies of this generation, descended from the original three harpies from the old myths: Celaeno, Ocypete, and Aello. The world was full of Remnants, descendants of the Greek gods and their creatures, with various degrees of power retained from their ancestors’ blood flowing in their veins. Last year, when Zeus had tried to rebuild Olympus, many Remnants had been drawn to the tiny valley. Most of them had stayed after the battle that had followed, and they had built new homes and new lives in the shadow
