About this ebook
When Tamar Deane is orphaned at 17 in a small Cornish village, she seizes her one chance for a new life and emigrates to New Zealand. Alone and frightened on the Plymouth quay she is befriended by an extraordinary woman. Myrna Mactaggart is also travelling to Auckland, with plans to establish the finest brothel in the Southern Hemisphere. Myrna's friendship is unconventional to say the least, but proves invaluable when tamar makes some disastrous choices in the new colony. Tamar is the first in a sweeping family saga covering several generations and encompassing the Boer War and the First and Second World Wars. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5First in the Children of War trilogy. In March 1879 seventeen-year-old newly orphaned Tamar Deane emigrates to New Zealand from a small Cornish village. Alone and scared on the Plymouth quay she is befriended by the flamboyant Myrna McTaggert and on the ship by Dr. John Adams. During the three month voyage she helps John care for sick passengers. Myra and John's friendship in the new colony will be invaluable to Tamar as she takes on work as a seamstress whilst Myra works to establish a high-class brothel in Auckland. Tamar meets newly widowed Peter Montgomery, who after they are married shows a tendency to drink. She also meets and falls in love with Kepa who father's her illegitimate son Joseph, but Kepa and Tamar cannot be together. A marriage to Andrew, a much nicer man and sheep station owner, takes place, but when her friend John and son Joseph go to South Africa to fight in the Boer war tragedy will result.Richly detailed with historical facts and events, this is a compelling series. The author has certainly done extensive research into the time period and this certainly shows. The story is well paced and entertaining. Highly recommended.
