Wayne Dowridge Construction Manual - wayne dowridge
Introduction
Many of us would agree that a house is one of our most prized possessions. Because of this and the fact that it is also most likely our most expensive possession, a lot of careful thought should go into the planning and building of the house. The information in this manual is from practical knowledge, gained over the past ten years of working with various engineers, architects and other builders. It is not my desire to dispute the technical aspects of construction work, but to provide the practical aspects to compliment the technical. I have tried, as much as possible, to use words that are easy for the lay-person to follow, so that even those who are not professionals will understand.
This manual also contains valuable information for prospective homeowners who have hired contractors, but still need to understand the various stages as the building progresses. It is, after all, a huge investment, the biggest some of us will ever make!

Using a measuring tape, preferably a hundred foot (100ft.) one, make a rough layout of the area and add three feet (3ft.) to it (the additional 3 ft. allows ample room for any change in planning). The land might look beautiful on the surface, but don’t be fooled. Sometimes you can get up to fifteen feet (15ft.) of mud before rock is reached, which can pose serious problems. If this is the case, you must rent a tractor (320 model or
