Never let a Monday go to waste, I say.

Amelie Spencer gives me the side-eye.

You realize he used to use that warrior mindset mumbo-jumbo to mask his flaws, right? she says.

I place down the fork and chew the last piece of bacon. I turn to Dyer. He shakes his head.

He’s been dead for eight months, he mutters.

Oh, it’s too soon to tell the truth? Amelie counters.

As much as Amelie often speaks without filters, I agree with her. Dad created a persona that helped him avoid the guilt of his mistakes. He was always a father by name, not by action. Hardly the man to emulate.

Amelie turns to me again. But I’m sure you feel differently, don’t you Sam? Somehow, you became a lawyer, just like him. Lucky you.

I sigh. I’m not getting into this with you. Can we stick to the topic?

She slow claps. You’re the star of the show. The men at dad’s firm now answer to you, their first female boss. I admire your life-long finesse.

I bite my lower lip.

Instead, I take one last sip of my orange juice, but it’s now bland to the taste.
