    INTRODUCTION

    AMAZING BASEBALL RECORDS

Fans were ready for history to be made on September 28, 2019. More than 32,000 people filled Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. Every time first baseman Pete Alonso stepped up to home plate, the fans took out their phones and cameras. They wanted to capture a major moment in baseball history.

The night before, Alonso had hit his 52nd home run of the season. This tied the Major League Baseball (MLB) record for most home runs in a season by a rookie. There were only two games left in the season. Would he get one more homer to break the record?

Alonso struck out in his first at-bat. In the third inning, he came to the plate again. The pitcher threw two balls and one strike. Then he threw a fastball, and Alonso crushed it. As the ball flew high over the centerfield fence, fans jumped to their feet and roared. Alonso had 53 home runs for the season—the most ever hit by a rookie.

The record that Pete Alonso broke wasn’t very old. Just two seasons earlier, New York Yankees centerfielder Aaron Judge had hit 52 home runs as a rookie in 2017.

Pete Alonso stands in the middle of a baseball ground and celebrates his victory.

Pete Alonso celebrated after hitting his record-setting home run against the Atlanta Braves on September 28, 2019.

Some baseball records last a short time. But others have lasted for decades. Baseball is an old sport. Fans have been cheering for their favorite teams for more than 140 years. The National League (NL) started in 1876, when people were still riding in horse-drawn carriages. The American League (AL) began in 1901.

Baseball was very different back then. Pitchers played in a lot more games, and they usually pitched entire games. In 1884 Charles Radbourn pitched an incredible 678 innings for the Providence Grays in Rhode Island. He won 60 games that year—the all-time
