It had been six months since Rupert’s death, and Lenore was beginning to feel lonely and trapped in the big London house. Her maid and cook were distant and indifferent, and the shock of his death had ebbed away and she was beginning to feel, simply put, rather bored. They had only been married a year, after all, and a whole year of mourning seemed a long time to stay in this sober, rather friendless state.

Lenore smiled and murmured a welcome, feeling oddly shy as she arrived at the entryway and faced Lisa. It
